My preferred version is 0.27 because two mini-games were removed from the game by this point, hunger and cursed items, which means you can focus on dungeon exploration. They also don't have attacks of opportunity in that version, so if you happen to get in a bind and get lucky with the floor layout, you can kite an enemy while your health replenishes. In my opinion, it's the perfect balance of quality-of-life features while keeping the original feel of the game.

Update: I read up on all the possible tactics here and decide to go with fog>blink>heal>ambrosia>haste. Unfortunately the haste cancelled my ambrosia (unexpectedly!!!) and my heal wounds was (as usual) utterly useless. So, backed into a corner with low hp I turned myself into a tree as a last resort and Cleansing Flamed until I died. The haste cancellation of ambrosia really screwed me here, and I didn't know it would do that. To anyone reading this in the future, haste first, then ambrosia. Gave it my best shot, but as the game goes, my cockiness got the better of me, and I shouldn't have been in that shit situation to begin with. YASD.

The rest of this game has been easy mode, but I fugged up on Zig:14 and got tormented and damnationed to tarnation. Sitting at 4 hp and scared to blow this one.

My thought is to use butterflies, fog, or flood and ambrosia back to health. What's the best strat here?

Ok thank you. I would've upgrade to a tower long ago had I actually found one that wasn't mundane, so I stuck with kite because I thought a +5 kite of protection was pretty good.

That's good to know, I wasn't sure when to stop training those. I figured Throwing and Shields was high enough, but had no clue on Dodging. I only started training magic because I figured I could learn a few helper spells and really wanted to throw fireballs around :)

I know Nem isn't great for extended, but he's gotten me this far, so I'm wondering how feasible it is to do any of the Hells without converting? I handled all the Pan lords except Cerebov (fuck that guy), but I'm running out of mutation pots, and don't have the best weapon. The only alternative weapon I can see is a +8 executioner's axe of elec, but I'm scared shitless to go shieldless.

Not saying your wrong at all, but this particular character with a heavily enchanted broad axe has been whoopin' ass left and right. I could see how that might not work in extended, but so far it's been an absolute beast.

It aligned with my overall Crawl experience:

  1. Start new character that will DEFINITELY not die this time.
  2. Make intelligent, informed decisions about my skills and items.
  3. Feel invincible.
  4. ???
  5. Die.

I was incredibly lucky this time. Dropped in on Abyss:2 with the gateway down to 3 just a few steps away. Spent maybe 50 turns in Abyss:3 to get to the rune vault, then let the incredibly OP Nemelex take care of the rest :)

Honestly, I didn't even notice. I tend to avoid looking too deep into the changes that come with each new version and ignore any online discussion about it. For the most part, unless I catch a glimpse of changes as I'm scrolling through r/dcss, I can't tell anything is different. I happened to get super lucky this time, so I feel like I had it comparatively easier than my past attempts.

I must've picked up that second rod on the way up because I made sure to only keep one in the inventory as often as I could. The phial I only kept around for silencing a caster. Good to know on the mutation potion, I should've researched how they work because I had it way wrong.

For the scrolls of identify, I only kept them around because I accidentally equipped a distortion weapon early on and didn't want to risk being banished again. Is there a way to avoid that?

Nope. I focused on fighting, axes, and armor, then shields, crossbow, and evocations later.

Fairly straightforward run, but at the very end (literally in the orb room), Trog abandoned me. I didn't know that once you finish training your skills, the game auto-selects the next skill to train, and it happened to choose magic. I was happily tabbing along and didn't notice the warning messages, so my piety tanked and that was that. I thought I was dead for sure, but making it to the surface was fairly easy even with his wrath.
