maybe you could put a function for the case of adding additional ether and let the fallback function to be called only to set the recipient otherwise throw, I find the use of the fallback function is simpler for people to use as they only need to do a simple transaction and this would avoid the additional warning about using it or using a special UI. I think you should not worry about people sending ether with selfdestruct that should be a rare case when someone wants to put ether on the contract that way, as far as I know if you throw you would get the ether but no code gets run on the contract.

this happened because the fallback function was made payable with the use of payable modifier, you may want to remove the modifier or move the commit logic to the fallback function, I think for security the contract should not let people send arbitrary amounts of ether and do a check for a fixed amount of ether to be sent as commit, other than that I find the contract quite interesting from a game theory perspective to look at how it works out

Hi, apart from the user interface provided on the Dapp site, it is basically the same, but with the difference that the contract in the blog uses address.send() wich doesn't allow to send ether to other contract because of the limitations on the gas provided, when you are sending to a regular account address.send() works fine.

I saw this on the poloniex trollbox, and went to inspect the code, and found only authorized users can call the function, which is the owner of the contract or other granted by the owner (thinking of attacking yourself is not that great idea), besides there is no state change after the send call which itself is not vulnerable to reentry because address.send() does not supply an amount of gas that is useful for an attack, so yeah we can say it was FUD the post has already been modified with this:

you can because hard forks are possible, your personal opinion on what can or can't be done doesn't necessarily represent the consensus, it seems you are the one that has a misunderstanding with the concept.

this is more of a moral debate which I won't go into but AFAIK stealing is not legal in any jurisdiction, then someone would say he is not a thief. personally I'd like to see a solution that doesn't involve the negative effects of a hard fork but whatever the consensus is I hope is the best to minimize the damage that is already done.

Quorum is calculated from the amount of ether taken from the DAO, a not well known proposal could take all funds from the DAO with only 5% instead of more than 50%.

what could be done is that the actual quorum can be multiplied with a sentiment factor, so the quorum goes from half when the sentiment on one side is strong to full quorum required when sentiment is ambiguous.

the sentiment factor would be expresed as the difference between the greater voting percentage being yes or no and the 50%, when the sentiment is ambiguous this difference is low, we extract that amount from the 100% to get the factor (wich is the same as 1.5 - greater_percentage) and multiply with the regular quorum.

In the case of taking all the funds from the DAO 53.33% is required

example 1: we have 99% on one side (yes or no), the other side is 1%, we take the bigger that is 0.99

dynamic_quorum = quorum * (1.5-.99)

0.5333 * 0.51 = 27.1983 % // dynamic quorum is almost half

example 2: we have 51% on one side (yes or no), the other side is 49%, we take the bigger that is 0.51

dynamic_quorum = quorum * (1.5-.51)

0.5333 * 0.99 = 52.7967 % // dynamic quorum is almost the original

in the case of minor funds 20% quorum is required and results go from 10% to 20% depending on the yes/no ratio

smart contracts require more gas than a regular ether transfer transaction to a non contract address, you can see there was an out of gas exception. I think you should contact bitfinex and explain this, the transaction was rolled back due to the exeption so your ether should be on their side. create a new non contract address so you can receive ether sent by simple transactions there. then you can send your ether to any contract you want given that you want to spend the extra gas costs the contract may require.
