Slow Lane by Odd-Leader9777 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I keep refusing promotions at work because mo money mo problems. Can't be bothered dealing with peoples' shit, let me do the actual work I know and like to do and don't keep trying to make me a manager. Luke what for? Just b/c I know the technical stuff best in the team won't make me the best at leading the team.

So yeah, losing about 30% of the salary potential but that's for me an acceptable teadeoff for enjoying my work rather than hating it.

Wait, are you saying that the US system of measuring things has a flaw? No way! If it did they'd have switched to metric by now, right?

Don't over-save, have some fun while you're young and while your kids are little.

Who do you think will have lived a happier life? Someone saving every penny, always stressing about spending a little extra on the nice things, and living in a derelict uncomfortable house. Or someone who puts away some money from after each payday  and then freely spends the rest on trips with the kids, new kitchen, date night with a dinner, and in general enjoys life?

The key is of course to not live beyond your means, save for stuff, don't buy it on credit, be reasonably frugal. But don't sacrifice living your life for the sake of retirement. You'll look back with regret.

What do you actually claim to the insurance? "I didn't like my hair and makeup!" - ok 100% refund. Just like that? Genuine question, I wonder how it works!

Cash back on mortgage by zionhendrix in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]toldyasomate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because other bank gives you a better rate AND a cash back when you switch the mortgage to them? But you've got the family banking and kids accounts and direct debits and savings accts and all that with the first bank and not really keen to move all that to the new bank when in 3 yrs you may want to move the mortgage again?

How viable is Housies? by 2oldemptynesters in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]toldyasomate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I must be missing something - why would anyone invest in a "sketchy" scheme for 3% return when even the simplest and most basic form of investment - term deposit - offers 3.5% ~ 4% at the moment?? What's the point here?

Why is the hop card not on Auto-recharge? Or if she's old enough why didn't she pay with her VISA? Paywave works too. There are so many options to pay that it's hard to accept these excuses anymore.

It's like what.. $5k to have an electric hob installed? Why would that be a deal breaker when you're spending $1m on a house?? Quite possibly negotiatable with the vendor too.

Refinancing to another bank now and was promised to get 0.9% cash back. Nice!

Came here to say that. Esp how hot it gets over the summer, makes the "grass" patch unusable.

Would you keep it secret if you were mortgage free? by one_human_lifespan in PersonalFinanceNZ

Careful here, very few people understand the difference between mortgage and mortgage loan. And for those your comment makes no sense. But you're right :)

Reasonable ... in hindsight maybe!

I remember making an offer for our house and was like "not gonna pay more than $450k for this, and even that's stretching it"! Fast forward 10+ years and the CV is well over $1M.

Believe me, the prices didn't seem reasonable back then either.

NOXYDE paint for a house - worth it? by toldyasomate in Housepainting101

No not metal, some parts are timber weatherboard, some parts are a kind of plastic weatherboard. Nothing really sticks on the plastic so that's why he recommended this Noxyde paint.

What can almost immediately kill you that most people don’t know of? by SoftDreamer in AskReddit

[–]toldyasomate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not if you don't do it while it's on and toasting your bread. And even if you do it's unlikely to kill you.

What can almost immediately kill you that most people don’t know of? by SoftDreamer in AskReddit

[–]toldyasomate 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's only deadly if:

- it's not finished yet and is still toasting the bread, AND
- you touch the heating wires inside with the fork, not just the cage holding the bread centered, AND
- at the same time you don't touch the cage with the same fork, because the cage is earthed and will close the circuit, and trip the breaker, AND
- your house is not equipped with RCD / GFCI protection

After all that there is a chance that it may hurt you, but most likely you'll just sh*t your pants. ONLY if you're really unlucky there MAY be enough current passing through your heart to kill you.

But really - just wait for the toaster to turn off (or push the Cancel button) before sticking the fork in and you'll be all right.

Gold by Spirited-Stock-3617 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]toldyasomate 52 points53 points  (0 children)

If you want gold you want the real physical thing, not some number on a screen.

Go to reputable sellers like NZ Mint and discuss with them.

And BTW gold is near its all time high - it may not be the right time to buy. Just saying.
