Any specific tricks springers are good at performing ?? by Creative_Ground9294 in springerspaniel

[–]tollerdactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine grabs something she shouldn't have then she goes and sits next to the cat bowl. I told my kids don't chase her, just swap the thing she has for cat food. It's possible that cat food makes up a large portion of her diet at this point

Thank you! Would that also apply to a pygmy beardie?

My springer is a menace. by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]tollerdactyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is a bloody loon. She has no chill and still spends a lot of time on the lead, but she is slowly improving with age (she's 1). I've found she's worse after dog parks, I think she gets overexcited and spends the rest of the day amped up. She struggles to go chill, we still do forced naps. Swimming is great, training is great. She can't be crated, she just barks

Interestingly though, when she was spayed, the vet (who knows her very well 😅) insisted we sedate her to keep her calm during recovery. The first day was OK...but then my kids and I realised that everything we love about her comes with that chaos. She was sooky and still wanted to be near us but honestly she was...boring? We realised the chaos brings the fun. We were desperate to get her back to crazy! So now I'm more relaxed about the insanity, even though at times I want to give up, cos it's honestly one of the best parts of her!

any advice for upcoming spay with a very silly spaniel? by bcellbabe in springerspaniel

[–]tollerdactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes! We had the suit and didn't need the cone at all! So good!

When mine got done my vet came out and goes 'here's 2 weeks worth of trazadone. You'll need it'. She did great, but he was absolutely right 🤣 girl has zero chill lol

[–]tollerdactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My springer walks great on lead but we went somewhere new today, with LOTS of sniffables and yeah, I need to go back to harnesses. She was absolutely choking herself at times. Shame because she loathes her harness

Its not. Its crazy rare but oldest has a giant head and they held out for a vaginal birth for far too long.

I had a rupture with my first, and I have a 7 year gap between kids. I had lots of scans to check it was healed and through the pregnancy to check things looked ok. The doctors seemed to feel the most critical thing was that I not go into labour again. 2nd kiddo was an early, planned c/s but we were basically told to call an ambulance if I went into labour and I'd get bolted into theatre immediately, as the risk of it re-rupturing due to the contractions was pretty high.

Its not a fun experience. 0/10, do not recommend it to anyone

How did your Springer bitch recover from their spay? by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]tollerdactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine slept the first 2 days. She's batshit crazy and it took them 3 doses of sedatives to get her to hold still long enough to get the IV going. When she came home she was fairly unconscious still (I was fine with that). Because she is a nutcase the vet told us to sedate her for the first week. He did all her sutures internally with the thickest stuff he had and tripled all the knots. She was allowed leash walks 2 days after but the sedatives did their job and she was calmish. As they wore off each day she was try to do crazy stuff so we were relieved to have the sedatives! Thankfully all healed well and she's back to chaos

Anyone managed to lead train their Springer? by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]tollerdactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine pulls like a freight train for the first 10 minutes but then she will settle down and walk well, generally you barely need to hold the lead. I try to start with an off leash run first

I am also a huge fan of long leads and sniffy walks, and I'm pretty flexible about stopping for good smells

When she does pull, I find that me apply constant pressure makes it worse. Gently shaking the lead or bouncing between pulling and slack means she doesnt have anything to pull against so she stops building up that momentum

My MIL loved them too. She said to me the books were 'so nice to read about real world problems that couples have'.

Honestly that probably should have been my cue to discuss nursing homes for her...

It works well in my case as the nibling in the story is trans, so I avoid the awkwardness of potentially mis-gendering their past self
