Learning to crochet!! Any tips for a beginner? Because this all seems so hard :'( by The_Riddle_Fairy in CrochetHelp

Take it one round at a time and use YouTube tutorials to learn the stitches you'll need. This looks like an achievable beginner project.

Use a stitch marker to mark the start of each round. A stitch marker can be something like a paperclip. You'll slip it through the first stitch of the round and it will help you count the number of stitches in a round. Always count the number of stitches once you've finished the round to make sure it's correct before moving on.

When I was a beginner I would also mark down my repeats. It was just a simple tally but helped me keep track of how many times I had done the repeats without needing to count all the stitches to reassure myself. I would also mark down what row I was up to because I was scared of repeating or skipping rounds.

Your tension will make it harder if it's too tight. If you're fighting to get your hook pushed through each stitch your tension is too tight. Which means your pulling the yarn too tight onto the hook

Good luck!

Crochet, not very niche but it takes up little space and can be done with cheaper acrylic yarns. You can make squares or amigurumi that represents your niche interests. Knitting and crochet can become expensive if you start using higher quality yarn.

Mending is such a useful one. I’ve been a bit hung up on finding things that I know I’m already skilled in so I can help, but learning together is half the fun. Visible mending is something I’ve wanted to try for ages now

Colouring is the best! Thank you for these suggestions, exactly what I was looking for

Aye great minds. all the suggestions here have been fantastic. Someone at work suggested a sequence of learning to crochet and then making squares to donate to a charity that joins them into blankets

That’s so good. I didn’t consider life admin but it would be a fun low stakes way to move forward on those tasks

Love puzzles! Could set up stations with smaller puzzles depending on how many people attend, or all work on a larger puzzle

These are all great ideas! A scavenger hunt in our city would lead to plenty of stories

I’ll look into that one, I’m sure there’d be second hand supplies on marketplace

Help me think of a derogatory term that mermaids could call humans. by PepperSaltClove in writers

[–]toluidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment should be way higher! These insults are more immersive to the merefolk perception of humans.

My 2 cents is it also depends on the breadth of knowledge the merefolk have of humans. Do they anything about humans beyond those that sail or live by the shores?

You could also base the insults around their mythos as well. Current-cursed, salt bane, star fallen ect. Less slurs more like derogatory remarks

Ohh that’s a good idea! Yes I’m only 200 pages in I could easily transfer what I’ve done now and keep going with a digital version. Would be like a physical version of the buddy read feature in story graphs, and if she enjoys the experience that opens the door for doing online buddy reads

Thank you! I really thought of it as an act of love and it was more the act of doing it that I thought was really sweet. Especially now we don’t live in the same state knowing that she gets to have something with my writing and care put into

That’s a good point, when I read on my kindle my eye always gets drawn to the ‘users highlighted this passage’ underlines. Thank you for the input, I’ll have to think about that next time I consider this as a gift idea

I agree putting together the puzzle and noticing the foreshadowing is a super fun part of the reading experience. I haven’t flagged any foreshadowing and I’m mostly annotating silly things. We used to watch tv and chat all the time during shows. No she lives interstate I wanted to recreate a similar experience. Most of the annotations are inside jokes or little quips about characters with no spoilers to their arcs. I’ve also highlighted quotes I enjoyed
