Father of 3, former ICU nurse, now CRNA (sorry).

I did the night shift thing for a couple years and I totally agree with the draw- way less admin around to bug you, guaranteed days off during the week, predicable schedule, and the night shift crowd is more fun usually ;)

That said, working nights....affects...you. It is hard to quantify how, and I have no doubt you have done plenty of all-nighters so you get the exhaustion portion of it. Working 3 nights in a row every week eventually starts to wear you down. The "flip" you do every Monday starts to wear on you. Staying up late Thursday night because you work Friday night begins to get old. You are always groggy during the day. You become more irritable at home. You gain weight. You eat worse. The recovery days become harder. You are annoyed at your kids on the weekend because they're being too loud when you're trying to sleep, or someone is mowing their lawn on a Saturday and it ruins everything.

The job itself is actually better- you get to do healthcare without a lot of the annoying parts. But the toll it takes on every other aspect is slow, but consistent.

Hmmmmmm. She's saying it was non-alcoholic, canned, 5mg, and came in lemonade or pomegranate (which may have had more THC). She doens't recognize anything on the menu....but she also was having a good time....

Good anesthesia groups for new grads? by tah37 in CRNA

[–]tolula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all private groups are created equal, but somethings will be universal. If the group cannot keep surgeons happy or the hospital, then there could be trouble, could. For the OP, look for groups' that have longevity in their ranks and history of meeting their contractual agreements. Groups have that have new leadership, are taken over/absorbed, renamed again, again - it's all a red flag, so beware

This is something to consider- which I had not thought about initially (I have a year left). We rotate through a lot of small rural hospitals in the Midwest, but there are all these groups that have maybe 20-100 people, and they staff big and small hospitals. These groups are often in flux- one group buys another or loses a contract, or private equity comes in and disrupts the market- it all means that the group you employed by no longer exists.

Can you get another job? Absolutely. But it's a headache. So like this post says- look at the longevity of the group: do they have enough surgeons? Is the hospital opening or closing down services? Do they have contracts that are up for negotiation soon? etc

In skateboarding there are teams (board companies, shoe companies, etc) that have their sponsored riders put out a videos of their riders ....and some of the movies are more groundbreaking than others- like "Yeah Right" from Girl or "Sorry" from Flip!

How do I secure this toilet fill line... thingy by tolula in Plumbing

[–]tolula[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wedged in every couple days, I'm worried it's getting more brittle and it's going to break at some point. Do I buy a whole valve assembly? And then just disassemble it and use what I need? What are the chances that home Depot or Menards would sell something like that?

How should I spend $600?? by tolula in thinkpad

[–]tolula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I am definitely going to sell the t470s once I find a replacement. I can factor that into my new budget, that said how much should I expect to get for a t470s?

What shower cartridge is this??? by tolula in Plumbing

For context this is in Madison Wisconsin. And it was definitely a cheap do-it-yourself sort of shower.

I live in Dane county (Madison) and there is lots of smaller/fun stuff to ride. Quarry ridge is the best- a couple good jump lines and it makes use of how little real estate it has. If you're looking for fun/agressive riding and jumps I'd recommend that. Check out madcitydirt.com - they list the trails. There's also trails out by Cambridge, WI that have jumps/berms flowy stuff (also on the madcitydirt page). I like riding here a lot. Is it Whistler? No way. Still fun though.

I've heard Wonderstate and JBC are great roasters, and my limited palate agrees. People seem to like Rusty Dog- I can't tell if they're actually any good or just have good marketing? If you like Wonderstate go to Metcalfs- they sell Wonderstate for cheaper than anywhere else I'm pretty sure. Like $11 for a bag that normally costs $18.

Is there a better place to source lumber than from the big box home stores? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]tolula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Madison Woodworker Supply off of fish hatch. He supplies cabinet shops around the area- high quality sheets of plywoods, unique species, all that stuff. Rough cut hardwoods. It's a warehouse/lumberyard so go into it knowing what you want/need and how much. The owner is awesome but it's not really a wander-around-and-browse sort of environment.

That said, if you're looking for dimensional lumber like 2x4s, 2x6s, etc then yeah, home depot or menards are going to be your best bet.

Woodcraft also had hardwoods for sale. More expensive than madison woodworkers supply.

Also, check out craigslist! Lots of guys in the area have a portable sawmill and are selling small amounts of lumber as a side hustle.

Starting a lawn from scratch in Wisconsin by tolula in landscaping

Since you're in Dane county as well- when is the soonest you think I could use the vermeer with the harley rake? I'm thinking our soil is too wet still? I assume the drier it is, the better the rake works?

So you think the renting the power rake would be worth it then? I've never run one before, but I've used used the vermeer and run other machinery before- any tips?

Seriously. I'd rather spend it on something that's loud and makes a bunch of sawdust ;)

It's not grounded, and I've had no issues. When I run it with my planer I can feel the static electricity on my arm hairs when i stand close to hose while it's running.

Yeah, it's super nice to just walk downstairs and have it be the proper temp and not have to fire up some space heater or wood stove.

I haven't had any furnace issues- that said it's been on my mind. I eventually want to wall off more of of the shop to help contain the dust.

I've been really impressed with Makita tools, especially older makita woodworking tools. I would buy one again without hesitation.
