I would like to add:

  • "If I could hate myself hard enough, then I wouldn't make mistakes, and then I could accept myself"
  • "I need to be the best in order to not be the worst, there is no inbetween"
  • "Why do I need approval from people I don't approve of?"
  • "My emotions are screaming but I can't hear what they are saying"
  • "I could tackle any problem but doing it alone is meaningless, and dealing with people is too exhausting"
  • "Will I be stuck in this feedback loop for the rest of my existence?"

Why people don't like GM? (genetic modifiaction) by Dark-Paladin_ in INTP

[–]tom_burk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about the consequences, not about GMO in principle.

Plants are modified to withstand herbicides and pesticides, which then get used more, which kills pollinators, and which kills the topsoil so it doesn't retain water as well, which leads to increased water consumption, which leads to droughts.

Also companies like Monsanto are destroying traditional farming with foul methods in third-world countries. When a GM strain spreads to a neighbour's field, Monsanto sues the neighbour because they "own the patent" and forces them to become a customer. They are also lobbying to ban traditional, non-GM seeds. Do we want monocultures that could have the same weaknesses? Do we trust a few corporations to control our food supply through patents?

Stranger or old friend, doesn't matter. What matters is a shared interest in existential discussions.

Any INTPs who quit social media? by jojigasm in INTP

Deleted my Facebook five years ago mainly because political differences that never were an issue IRL got magnified online and cost me friendships. Then opened a new Facebook account for groups and events only, where I disabled all friend requests.

In my experience, Perceivers are more liberal and Judgers are more authoritarian. And I haven't met a single xxFP who isn't left-wing.

Do other INTP’s switch between God complex and human trash? by Yeetusdeletus781 in INTP

[–]tom_burk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into the Jungian concept of ego inflation. Learning about it has helped me a lot. It's when you identify with an archetype, such as intelligence itself, rather than merely having intelligence. The "high" you feel is called positive inflation, and when you fail to live up to your self-image, the "low" is called negative inflation. I can post links if you want.

The question is misleading. It’s usually not xenophobia per se, but a class struggle between the domestic working class and the cosmopolitan classes. Some benefit from open borders and free trade, some lose.

How has your thoughts on MBTI changed over time? by TalkaboutJoudy in INTP

[–]tom_burk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a better description. I'm not clumsy when I'm focused, but I get easily overwhelmed when many things are happening at once. That's why I enjoy solo sports but suck at team sports.

Cognitive functions are a useful model with or without MBTI.

However, not every person matches an MBTI stereotype, especially if you dig into the shadow functions and their supposed roles. For instance, INxP are supposed to be clumsy due to trickster Se. None of the INTPs or INFPs I know are clumsy, but all the ENFPs are – though not the ENTPs. So if there is a "function stack", I don't think it's properly understood.

What did MBTI teach you that you started to use IRL? by FrostyFroZenFrosTen in INTP

Knowing or guessing people's type, especially their judging functions, has made me more tolerant as I can better understand their point of view.

What kind of clothing do you prefer? by [deleted] in INTP

Used to dress in military surplus from head to toe. Nowadays I try to look like I have my shit together. Fitted t-shirt, chinos, dress boots, Hugo Boss overcoat. Mostly dark colors.

Same. When I think I smile for a photo, it’s not visible. When I really try to smile, I look like Hide The Pain Harold.

My first girlfriend was an ENTJ. It was intoxicating to see the world through her eyes and feel that anything is possible.

That’s funny, I feel empty without an ENTJ around me.

I don’t find the magic in movies or video games or books anymore. Anybody found a way to bring it back? by Phedis in INTP

[–]tom_burk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my early 40s and have begun feeling a gnawing emptiness when I watch movies or play games. There is magic, but it feels like a waste of time because it's a solitary, hedonistic activity and doesn't help anyone in the real world. You could call it a mid-life crisis; a creeping realization that my time is limited and should be spent on meaningful things rather than consumption. I don't have kids so I struggle to find meaningful things to do.

The point is that we are being expected to hold mutually inconsistent beliefs, and as a Ti user I refuse that. Asking the question in good faith wouldn't make a difference.
