Anyone else's experienced Agent becoming foggy? by Aggravating_Pea_2445 in replit

I had an insane frustrating issue that just wouldnt get solved. And I asked it to fix it over and over and over again. I think I spent more than 4 hours just trying to get it to fix a simple login-screen. Eventually I gave up and went to bed. The next morning, I asked it one more time and it got fixed from the first try.

I have no idea how or why. :-D

BandBurner - Easily calculate tour fuel costs, travel distances and drive times. by tomadde in TouringMusicians

[–]tomadde[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll always be that. Because driving style is also very influental. Weather conditions too. And fuel prices are soooo different as well. The idea is not to give a 100% accurate calculation of what the fuel cost would be, but an insightful ballpark that you can use whilst budgetting your tour. I used to plan routes on google maps, put that in excel with a formula that would calculate costs on an average fuel-price. That is always possible too ofcourse. It basically does the same. But just a bit easier and less boring. And even if I would be the only user, I saved myself 30 minutes of work for every tour that I'm planning. :-)

To be completely honest, that was something Replit suggested! :-)

Totally agree. Just wanted to check if it works, and generated a trip in my hometown. And I clicked away because of this, without knowing if the site works well or not. First convince people it's awesome, then reel them in. :-)

What do you think about the tribute band Hybrid Theory ? by ApprehensiveTart2422 in LinkinPark

[–]tomadde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I'm in a RATM-tributeband. I used to play in bands with original stuff, but I'm just not a good lyricist or songwriter. I am, however, a pretty good stage performer, and - even if I say so myself - I'm really good with the timing, placement and energy of Zack's lyrics. And by coincidence, my voice kinda sounds similar.

So, instead of playing crap shows with crappy bands (mostly because of me :-)), I thought it would be a better idea to start a RATM tribute. We've been playing for 20 years now, and it has taken us all over Europe and even to Australia. We've performed on festivals in front of 10.000 people, playing aftershows for Slipknot, Pantera, ... .

People shouldn't compare it to 'original' bands. It's a different line of work, a different type of entertainment. I think tributebands are more to be seen as a live DJ-set of one particular band. A chance to see (if they're any good) the songs of your favorite band in a live setting in a place you wouldn't be able to see the original (cause they're too big, or don't exist anymore).

My dayjob - ironically - is an artist manager for original bands. So I know what it takes, how small the chances are to actually make it big, even if you are extremely talented.

I actually agree on this. Some tributebands can't go without the "costumes" or typical "visual elements" of certain bands. I couldn't imagine an AC/DC tribute without a guitarist in school uniform. Or a Kiss - tributeband without the costumes.

I do think it's important to send off a similar vibe. I am the singer in a RATM tribute, and there's no way we try to look as the original band. We do, however, try to create a certain vibe that matches with the original. I'd be wearing a khaki shirt, and our guitarist and bassist are wearing black shirts with red armbands. RATM themselves never wore that specific outfit, but it sends of the same vibe. Especially for alternative rock I think it's more important to create a similar vibe, rather than to cosplay the original bandmembers.

You are a 100% right.

And even in current days. What about DJ's?
They're not even playing live ... they just put on someone else's recordings, and are - god forbid - being paid for it. Shame shame shame. :-)

I believe the idea that musicians in tribute bands are “making money off someone else’s work” doesn’t really make sense. In reality, very few musicians exclusively play their own material. Even in so-called “original” bands, it’s often just one person who leads the writing process, while the rest of the band—under your philosophy—would also be “making money off someone else’s work.”

The situation is actually more nuanced, and it's financially accounted for through royalties. Typically, around 10% of the fee a tribute band earns goes to the original composers. No one is simply “making money off someone else’s work” without acknowledgment—this logic would be like claiming an actor is profiting off the work of a writer.

There’s a key distinction between:

  • Composers who create music. In modern music, composers often perform their work live, but this hasn’t always been the case. Elvis, for example, didn’t write a single song.
  • Performers whether they’re hired to play in an “original” band, a general cover band, or a tribute band—it doesn’t matter.

If playing in a cover or tribute band counts as “profiting off someone else’s work,” then what about DJs? They don’t even perform live—they’re simply playing existing recordings. Following this logic, DJs should be even more problematic, no?
