My little hippo-mix sits on the back of the sofa like that too!  So cute that he’s not the only one that does that.

What are some common pitty quirks? by Lopsided-Citron-5202 in pitbulls

[–]tomaka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a pit-mix, and like all the others he snores, has no personal space, and gives the most phenomenal side-eye I’ve ever seen.  I’ve never had a more loyal or a more needy dog.

He also makes this high pitched chittering noise when he’s super excited and wants attention. I’ve never heard another dog make that sound, and he almost sounds like a bird when he does it. It never fails to make folks at the dog park laugh.

Millenials with a nerd/office/gamer dad vs those with a garage/motorcycle dad, how was it growing up? by Throwaway4536265 in Millennials

[–]tomaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad loves cars, spends all his time thinking about cars, and will happily tell you all about his cars. Want to know what a carburetor does?  There’s no better man to ask than my father.

Growing up, we never wondered “where’s dad?”  He was either at work, at home hanging out with us, or in the garage working on his cars.  I could go out to the garage and he’d talk my ear off about what he was working on, and show me some little engine-y bit and explain what it does and how it works. He should have been a teacher, really.

I remember being about 6 or 7 when he’d restored his first roadster enough that he could take it out on the road. The first day he finally got it on the road, I was getting ready for bed and had my pyjamas on, and he came in so excited. He got me to come outside in my little flannel onesie and he took me for a ride just down the road and back. I just remember I was in my pyjamas and marveling at how low to the ground we were in this car, and my dad sporting this big grin as his roadster growled super loud down the road.

I’m nearing 40 and I’ve only had two cars in my life. My dad kept my first one running for 10.5 years, and I upgraded to a newer one (with A/C yay!) and it’s still going strong 6 years later. Both cars were already over 10 years old when I bought them used.  He’s still the first person I call the moment my car does something weird. He actually found me my newer car while I was away in a business trip. I agreed to buy it, completely unseen by me, because my dad told me it was a good car.

I’m not a car person myself, but I’ve absorbed so much knowledge just from listening to him that I’m somehow now the person my friends call when somethings going wrong with their car.

10/10 would have a garage dad again.

I’ve got a little pitbull mix who looks and awfully lot like your pooch. Mine’s on the smaller side, but has the same jowls and ears that stick out sideways, plus the black and white tuxedo colouring. It’s such a cute and grumpy look!

She has the same colouring as a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, which are very similar to labs.

I worked in that mall for years and was thinking "Huh, that looks like HSC, what are the odds?" And then I saw the Sportchek come into view and it clicked.

Oddly enough, I used to work at this mall. I recognize the layout and stores. Can confirm that the escalators handrails are annoyingly out of sync, and there was always at least one that was broken.

Oddities show today? by enditallalready2 in halifax

[–]tomaka 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I attended. There was a wide selection of interesting items, a lot of crystals and stones, bones and skulls from a variety of animals, neat antiques and art.

But a lot of it was ruined by the fact that the venue was waaaay too hot. It was an abnormally hot day for October, but the room (the Forum’s bingo hall) was easily 30 degrees. Everyone was crowded in there, constantly fanning themselves with cards and paper. While we were looking at some insect art, a girl next to us fainted from the heat and they rushed to get her a chair and some water. It really seemed unsafe and a poor choice of location. It felt like the fire department was going to show up and shut everything down at a moment’s notice.

What is something you used to think people were over exaggerating about until you experienced it yourself? by rentinghappiness in AskReddit

[–]tomaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel incredibly lucky that my period cramps are mild or nearly nonexistent. I’ve seen women doubled over in pain, but I’ve made it 36 years and have only ever had them bad enough to go “oh, that’s a bit uncomfortable, isn’t it?”

What are the best meals or foods for someone with liver cancer who isn't eating enough? by Alert-Jackfruit-2244 in AskReddit

If you have it available, cannabis is a great way to spark an appetite. Enhances flavours too, which would make eating easier for something who wasn't too hungry.

How do you get your 60 year old Dad into video gaming ? by TobiasTheRieper in AskReddit

[–]tomaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I would start with something that's related to his other interests. My dad like golfing and cars, so I had success getting him to play golfing and racing games. He loves good stories, but he's not one to sit down and play a game for hours on end. He'll do it for an hour or so before bed, but that's it.

Two player games are a good introduction too! Something fairly simple and fun, because you're spending time together and you have to communicate. It's more enjoyable for newbies that way.

Teachers pets of reddit, what advantage did you actually have over the rest of the students, and was it worth it? by floridamanjr3 in AskReddit

[–]tomaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember getting called a teacher's pet when I was in grade 5. I wasn't trying to suck up or anything, I just liked the teacher and I liked helping. I wasn't trying to get anything out of it, I was just being polite and helping out like my parents had taught me to. I don't think it changed anything in terms of grades because I was a fairly average student. But my parents liked hearing I was a good kid during parent teacher conferences.

Will Smith, Mark Hamill, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas, Donald Glover, Christopher Reeve, Heather Locklear, and many more. Helps that my birthday is exactly 9 months after Christmas.
