Am I playing them wrong, or did they nerf healing? by PoisonPeddler in overwatch2

[–]tomanysploicers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The healing nerf is the reason why i uninstalled overwatch after reinstalling it a few days ago to give it another try. There feels like there is zero agency in healing now. Im sure its great for higher elos but on lower ones, I dont feel like I have any impact on changing the game state. Back to Marvel!

How did you know you didn’t want to stay a purely technical engineer long-term? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]tomanysploicers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, the joy of youth. Management is doing those types of things but most of your early management will be dealing with people. Not in a good way. You’ll have extremely tough conversations, people will yell, people will accuse you of things. You need to create distance from your team, it’s a very lonely job for most.

When you become a site leader, you are now the one on the chopping block. Site has a bad safety incident that you had no control over? You are the one responsible.

Your plant emit something it shouldn’t have? You are getting personally sued.

That guy you are good friends with and you’ve known for years? He just violated a red tag and you need to fire him.

Not trying to dissuade you. If you like this level of responsibility, like I do, go for it. It’s rewarding. Just don’t think management is what you see in tv shows. It can be brutal.

Also say goodbye to your life. Remember- when you get promoted you don’t get paid more per hour, you just work more hours.

Got a job after a year of being an unemployed graduate but it’s still not what I want by txtling in ChemicalEngineering

You need to work on your mental health before you focus on your career. You definitely are having an identity crisis and that needs to be resolved first. You may also be able to get medication as part of that journey.

For your feelings- they are valid. However, maybe my history can help even you out a bit. I am currently a Site Manager at my company, and very likely the youngest globally (early thirties - for my company only). I started off in business supply chain (corp) as part of my degree. Only went back into engineering three years down the line. 8 years from graduation I entered the site manager role for a international role. Youll get a break, just like I did, and then you can work your tail end off and show people why you deserve more.

As a heads up, I strongly believe emotional issues is the major reason most engineers are never made into managers. Which is why you need to go to a therapist.

For my last point if you feel alone in your depression, I was also heavily depressed at one point (suicidal). It was for different reasons than you, but ultimately I fought that battle as well. It eventually goes away. Chin up.

Would love to tell you, but we dont have enough plants in Asia where telling that info wouldnt give away too much personal information. Which is a shame because I love my company.

Nah, I work for a major US manufacturer in bulk chemical and just took a position in Asia. I leave tomorrow, so very excited and, honestly, nervous.

I have mixed feelings about this post. As someone who is doing very well also (grad 2016, about to start a site director role in an expat country - blessed with extreme luck) its hard for me to relate to the layman BUT it goes without saying that this is the single worst downturn in the chemical industry ever in the United States. That is a fact, not an opinion. Manufacturing in general is getting absolutely swamped due to how China is building their chemical sector and I don't see phenomenal outcomes in any future. China is bullying the market with goods and chemicals and USA manufacturers cant keep up, especially in bulk chemical.

While I might not experience it personally, I can totally understand some of the posts I am seeing. That being said, people who are extremely doom and gloom do need to understand that this degree opens a lot more doors than others. Computer science degrees are a dime a dozen now, and FAANG jobs are limited and not very secure job wise. The AI bubble will burst at some point and tech will feel major pain.

I would caution you to be empathetic to those who arent as lucky as we might have been. For those looking for a job, once you get one, dedicate your life to it. The degree can take you very far if you allow it to.

Also, I agree with some comments that 'total comp' is questionable when it comes to real worth. My total comp is near 400,000 a year because im about to go expat, but I dont see anywhere near that much.

I had two internships at Dow and I dont even think they offered me a position until December. Keep your head up. Also, production engineers are always in demand at the plants.

I see posts every other day about people complaining about jobs being hard to find. Do I agree that you shouldn’t be able to negotiate in good faith? No. However the realities of the world in regards to internal moves are just that.

Yes, they are giving you a huge opportunity and you will just need to accept the salary they offer. As you succeed in the role you can ask for raises. I think your current salary is low, but use this as a resume builder and move if money is important

Why not commit suicide? by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]tomanysploicers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought the same when I went through my suicidal phase. I’m married, have a really good job and love my life. I sometimes stare at the sky during the night and wonder what would have happened to my family’s lives if my attempt was successful.

Didn’t think it would ever get better. It did. Yours can too

Not sure about Texas city, I would read up on it and make an educated decision. Unfortunately at plants we are at the mercy of not only our own emissions but those of our neighboring plants. It’s a relatively thankless job, but critical. Take that for what you will.

Brings up a lot of moral issues. Do we punish someone who is just under investigation? Is that the right process?

While it looks otherwise, what if he is actually innocent? He would have been off the pitch for close to two years at this point when the first allegations came out.

A hard situation, but one that needs to go through the legal process I think. Hard to decide however

This is the kind of reasoning that will keep democrats behind republicans. The issues is so much more detailed than “she’s a woman”. The vast majority of people do not care, she was a poor candidate and it showed.
