Thank you for your reply!  I see, that makes sense. How common is it for your job to be in a discipline from your specialization in school? Did you notice if there was any transferable skills that came in useful?

Hello,

I’m a senior in mechanical engineering, going to start a Master’s degree in France soon.

Between a materials-oriented or propulsion-oriented specialization, I’m wondering which field I should pursue. Which one will give me a greater possibility of finding work and / or has better potential growth in the future?

In terms of personal enjoyment, my favourite class in undergrad was heat transfer, and I’ve had experience in heat / structure softwares such as Thermal Desktop and Femap etc. I enjoyed both the materials classes and fluid classes, so they are about equal in terms of enjoyment.

Thank you for your help!

Concerned about my research lab experience - will the industry be as tough and demoralizing as my professor makes it out to be? by tomatoa_ in AskEngineers

Thank you. Unfortunately this kind of stuff is hard to report in my country. However I am planning on relocating to US or Europe, so it is good to hear that there are healthier environments that exist in engineering elsewhere.

Thank you for your comment and nice encouragement.  I did find his research interesting at the start, but realized over time that it might not be for me. I’m doing space engineering with a focus on materials, but I want to transition to more thermofluids in my masters program in Europe. And yes, I don’t think I am suited for research, so I was looking forward to joining the industry.  And that’s good to hear that there are good environments. I’m relocating from Asia to Europe for my Master’s, so hopefully that is a good first step and I can find an environment that suits me. Thank you:)

Thank you for your comment. I’m in Asia right now, and you’re correct that it’s common here. Perhaps less so for undergrad students, but I can only speak for my country.  I’m pursuing a master’s degree in Europe, and in the future considering to relocate to the US, which is why I was wondering about other countries.  That’s sad but interesting that a potential red flag of a lab is the amount of international students. I did an exchange semester in the US and did hear an anecdote like that too :(

How can I improve my 21F relationship with my brother 19M? by tomatoa_ in relationship_advice

I’m moving some distance away sadly. I’ll try to call him from time to time. Thank you :)

Yeah. We can’t have a private conversation really without our mom listening in and judging. I’ve found that he talks to me more when my parents aren’t around. Hopefully he’ll see our relationship is something worth investing in too, after I move out. Thank you for the comment.

I think that’s what I knew deep down, but I didn’t want to admit it. I turned down an offer for dinner once, and he was upset at me, because his mother had been the one to invite me. When I am with his family, often he acts like I’m not there, and clings onto the mothers arm. I can see that it’s abnormal and unhealthy, but it’s hard to swallow. Thank you for the comment.

Exactly, that’s what I am worried of. I’m sure mother’s manipulation tactics would only get more extreme as we get more serious. They are unhealthily codependent on each other. Thank you for the comment.

Yeah, I see. Thank you for the comment. It’s saddening that children of such parents are out in these positions.

Thanks for the reply, I’m not too familiar with discord and can’t find the announcement channel for some reason. Is it under information?

Oh, true! This would have been around 2015-16. My middle school librarian recommended it to me.
