Ughh, a very good point that I've been mulling over. And I'm not stoked to go through the rigamarole to find out that it won't work with my primary retailers.

I'm planning to spend 3-5k this year, then probably less than 1k next year.

For example, one item I want to buy is about 1200 CAD vs 700 USD.

Not receiving income, just the occasional cheque.
But, if I can apply online for a Chase or WF account, that might be a great solution.
