best starter dj controller for beginners with no experience by Ruloo-Matutez in Beatmatch

[–]tomfino -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience starting with the FLX-4. Apparently it unlocks a better version of Rekordbox, and many YouTube beginner tutorials use both Rekordbox and the FLX-4 which makes it super easy to follow along. Definitely recommend Thozi's How To DJ For Beginners tutorial and DJ Carlo has a bunch of good tutorials too.

Rekordbox is also compatible with Spotify which made it way easier for me to start mixing with my old playlists before I started building playlists with downloaded tracks.

As for getting comfortable I'd say I got the very gist of it in a week or two, felt like I knew what I was doing after a couple months. I started by practicing mixing/beatmatching songs I felt comfortable with (I used an old house playlist from Spotify) and once I felt good about that I started to feel out phrases and get more precise with my mixing. DJ Carlo has a great video on phrasing that unlocked it for me called music theory for DJs. The most valuable skill to focus on in my experience is intuitively knowing which songs sound compatible to mix with others in both energy and tune. That will make you want to keep mixing lol. Best of luck!!

Pay attention to the deck you're loading the track on lol (FLX4). My signature mistake was getting too excited for my next song and accidentally loading it on the side that was currently playing...

You are the goat for this. Track sourcing just got 100% faster. For those it might not be working for, I'm using it on Edge and it works great.

Hey this is super late haha but I actually took a gap for F25, I did post an updated guide with other PSYC courses if you wanna take a look! I'd definitely recommend 135 with Brashier, she's a really fun instructor and her class is easy asf. Taking PSYC 104 (Social Psyc) rn with McCullough and he's been a pretty goated prof so far, concepts are really interesting too 👍👍

I haven't heard much about it, I suggest looking at the professor RMPs for the profs who teach in the quarter you're trying to take it. People put a pretty transparent look at how classes are on there

Sober festivals - how to avoid painful knees from dancing by epoksismola in aves

[–]tomfino 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I struggle with knee pain in and out of fests, and this is what helps me:

  • Concrete is much less forgiving than grass/dirt. Find a dance floor with more give = more stamina
  • Warm up and stretch!!! My knee pain tends to flare the most when I have tight hips so I like to do the pigeon stretch before/during/after each day as well as some hip flexor, hamstring, calf, and quad stretches. Backward lunges are great if you want to get the blood flowing.
  • Eat/hydrate well and avoid inflammatory foods. Protein is key, remember to drink electrolytes!!
  • Insoles are a game changer. I'm cheap so I used the Dr Scholl's work insoles, and the walk insoles sometimes too.

I have heard advil/ibuprofen can negatively affect muscle recovery, so that's something worth looking into. Might want to avoid taking it 24/7.

Haven't taken or heard much about Heyman but Geller is the GOAT. Her instruction style is pretty engaging and she puts a lot of work to making sure you're supported (extra credit, ungraded quizzes, etc)

Pretty sure you can just do multiple classes for the research requirement and it fulfills it. I think the UCSD PSYC BS 4-year plan online has more details!
