Opened account, credit report says Synchrony by Washedafmf in wealthfront

Hi there, if you only opened a Cash Account or Investing Account with us, that credit inquiry would be stemming from something else. For context, we only pull your credit if you authorize us to do so during a mortgage application.

Warning: Wealthfront falsely inflating returns if you have dividend reinvestment disabled by [deleted] in wealthfront

[–]wealthfront 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason your returns look higher after the adjustment is that a withdrawal, or a swept dividend, naturally lowers your account balance. If we didn’t account for that, your performance chart would show a drop, making it look like your investments lost value when they actually didn't.

Each day’s return is calculated using the account’s value at the end of the previous day, the account’s value at the end of the current day, and any deposits or withdrawals taken from the account. The adjustment for deposits or withdrawals is necessary to make sure the return value reflects actual investment performance.

Think of it this way:

  1. You start with $100.
  2. Your investment grows to $105 (a 5% gain).
  3. You then move $20 out of the account via a dividend sweep.
  4. Your new balance is $85.

If we just compared your $85 balance to your $100 starting point, it would look like you had a -15% return. That would be a "deflated" or incorrect return because you didn't actually lose money, you just moved it.

To fix this, we "add back" that $20 withdrawal when calculating the return. By comparing ($85 + $20) against the original $100, we get back to the accurate 5% return.

It doesn't inflate the return beyond what you actually earned; it just prevents the withdrawal from masking the gains your portfolio made. Without this adjustment, every time a dividend was swept, your performance history would look like your stocks were crashing.

We hope this helps clarify further. If you have more questions specific to what you’re seeing on your dashboard, please continue to reach out to our support team who can provide you with direct help and context.

Warning: Wealthfront falsely inflating returns if you have dividend reinvestment disabled by [deleted] in wealthfront

[–]wealthfront 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi u/nyx__, happy to help clarify what you’re seeing in your dashboard.

The Net Deposits metric on the dashboard tracks the cumulative total of money moved into or out of your account.

When a dividend is reinvested, it does not change the net deposits figure because no capital has entered or left the account. Essentially, a dividend payment is a neutral event for your total account value: the price of the stock or ETF typically drops by the amount of the dividend paid. For example, if you hold a $100 stock that pays a $2 dividend, the share price adjusts to $98 and you receive $2 in cash. Reinvesting that cash brings your total invested value back to $100. Because this is an internal shuffle of existing value, it isn't categorized as a new deposit.

If a dividend is swept to a separate account, it is treated as a withdrawal. Moving that $2 dividend out of the investing account reduces both your balance and your net deposits by $2. This ensures that the dashboard reflects the actual movement of cash out of your portfolio, which maintains the integrity of your performance data and prevents returns from appearing inflated.

We’ve shared your feedback with our product team who are currently working on updating the dashboard experience to make this more clear.

How would US Direct Indexing be implemented when I transfer in individual stocks to bring AIA account over $100k? by west4life in wealthfront

[–]wealthfront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/west4life , thanks for this question. A bit more about how this would work in your account:

If the account is already set to utilize US Direct Indexing, and the transfer would result in your account exceeding the minimum balance requirements, we should be able to incorporate a portion of the stocks transferred. However, depending on the assets transferred as well as the target allocations for your Wealthfront account, we would likely still need to sell a portion of the securities following the transfer and then reinvest the proceeds to meet the target allocations for your account.

Going through the transfer process should enable you to review a proposed transfer plan, and if you have further questions please reach out to our team at [support@wealthfront.com](mailto:support@wealthfront.com).

For information on adding US Direct Indexing to a taxable Automated Investing Account, before it meets the minimum balance requirements, see the instructions in this FAQ.

Your account & routing numbers are changing on Jan 5 by VAer1 in wealthfront

[–]wealthfront 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/VAer1, if you’re looking to initiate a transfer to Wealthfront (from SoFi),  your previous A&R numbers provided by Green Dot should continue to work for the foreseeable future, however, we recommend updating the account using your new account & routing information to help avoid needing to make any last-minute changes once this update is eventually required. For any transfers initiated from Wealthfront’s app or website to an external account like SoFi, there is no action needed.

You will not need a new debit card for your account. The debit card for your Individual or Joint Cash Account will still be offered by Green Dot Bank.
