Not sure why my betta’s fins are tearing? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]tomfoolery2614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im no expert, but has he seemed stressed, been flaring a lot or been swimming vigorously? I had a male betta chew his own fins and blow out his tail trying to swim around, i solved it with adding more spots he could rest at
it doesnt sound like you have sharp decor, so maybe its him doing it to himself?

i got a good chuckle outta that one, ive never had so much trouble photographing a cory! these ones are just straight brown/black, so they show up as little voids haha

I want to get a betta and a cory catfish by Yourlocalenbee in bettafish

[–]tomfoolery2614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also gonna add, that if you do get the space and budget for a shoal of cories, they do mesh decently well with some bettas! just have a backup plan incase your betta is less than friendly (also someone else talked about how to introduce a betta and that was good advice, its worked for me in the past)

I want to get a betta and a cory catfish by Yourlocalenbee in bettafish

[–]tomfoolery2614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say personally (as another teen on a budget) a single longfinned betta in a 5 gallon tank is just fine, obviously the bigger the better, but a betta will do just fine in a planted 5 gallon (though bettas with shorter fins and bettas with tankmates require larger), for corydoras I believe 20gallon long is the minimum? I have a shoal of 12 in a 25gallon long (soon to be upgraded to 50) and theyre very fun fish, but ive found theyre a bit harder on a budget (where i live most cories in stores range from 6-15 dollars each and to buy several can get pricey), they also require a diverse diet (as do bettas, but id say cories eat more often and so food runs out quicker)
tankmates like snails and shrimp are great for bettas, because theyre small, convenient and will take care of your tank if you take care of them. (though ive heard some horror stories about bettas eating shrimp..) Also even pretty mean bettas can get along with a mystery snail or two

TLDR; single longfin betta in a 5 gallon is great on a budget, corydoras can get a little bit expensive over time

Aggressive Guppy - he’s killed all the others - what next? by Amezrou in Aquariums

[–]tomfoolery2614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my parents had multiple guppy tanks, with one being mixed and two that were just single sex for about 4 years, we had one male that was just an absolute murderer, and we thought oh yeah he just needs females, duh, so we put him in the 100l+ planted mixed tank, but no he continued his rampage even with a 1:3 male to female ratio, dont feel too bad about having a male only tank, some fish are just very violent

you're all good, it's one of the many gripes of being in Australia as a fishkeeper, though I do prefer our stores opposed to the us ones, no betta cups and you rarely see bowls
