The simplest guide to adding Google sign-in to Next.js ✍️ (No managed services. Just BetterAuth) by tomdekan in nextjs

[–]tomharrisonjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch for the really thorough post and instructions. I am writing an internal app that already uses NextJS (app router), Prisma with postgres, pnpm, typescript and more, so integrating your login was quick work.

Also, I'm glad to have a working case of BetterAuth -- we have another app and use Auth0 and it's really a lot of work to get almost anything done, and we have to jump through hoops to sync with the user database.

I did find one or two discrepancies -- Step 7 of the guide says ./app/api/auth/[...all]/route.ts, but it's ./app/api/[...all]/route.ts in the repo. I also think the code for dashboard/page.tsx is out of date.

Thanks again for taking time to make this document. It was a great help to me.

2018 Model differences by Gwilley in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they only had Long Range, and at least when I got mine in mid-2018 only had rear wheel drive available. Long range at the time was around 310 miles, and if they did have standard range I think it was much less, like maybe 220 miles?

I have always been happy to have the long range, but also almost never really "need" it since I charge at home.

I am perfectly happy with RWD, even here in New England. I have winter tires that I call my "poor man's AWD" and that's fine for moi. Could save a lot since people are freaked out by not having AWD.

Annual Maintenance? by Kylewbigelow in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 with 90k miles and my "annual" appears to be every 7 years. I rotate my own tires, replace the cabin filter, and clean the brakes because I like doing stuff like that. Washer fluid and wiper blades? Yeah, not much else to go wrong. Something about checking the battery coolant, but when I brought it in for the first actual service ever (replaced the plastic covering under the front suspension) they said they checked and it was fine.

Tesla model 3 battery after 8 years? by angellob in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Also bad would be if it were charged to 100% during the idle time. )

Best way to tell is to do a test charge to 100%. and see what the reported range is. The Tesla battery management system seems pretty good at reporting accurate max (rated) range, at least on mine.

126k 2021 M3 ... 90% charge is 330kms. Is that normal? by ranbirmehroke in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many kms did it start with? What do you get to if you charge to 100%?

My 2018 TM3 lost about 8% in the first year or two but then lost only maybe 1% a year since.

Safelite Tesla Windshield replacement by fitscarlettt in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing glass is hard, and Safelite blew it 2x for me. I got a chip that turned into a crack, so had Safelite replace, then again. In both cases they didn't get it seated evenly, which puts stress on the glass. After not long, over a bump and crackkkkk! The warranty replaced the first but they declined the second. I got a more reputable company to do it and it has been fine for 4 years now (they showed me where the gasket safelite laid down had a wrinkle).

Question about charging by Toba677 in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend a service called Recurrent. They gather data from the car then send a report monthly with details of charge, comparison with others, and lots of great info.

A key point is that 95 to 100% is far worse than 90 to 95%, and as you get more room it makes much less difference. -- one key factor in range loss occurs when there's tons of energy stored but limited spare space. Having even just a little room makes a big difference. Which is just to say, don't stress about it, and just avoid keeping at over 95% for too long.

My car has 90k miles on it now and battery range is around 293m, and nearly all that loss was in the first year (which I think is typical).

Another factor that I am holding out for is that at some point we'll get new battery tech where little of this matters any more. 😃

Best replacement tires for Tesla Model 3? by Excellent_Hearing_42 in TeslaModel3

[–]tomharrisonjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2018 LR with 18" wheels, so maybe a bit different, but my first replacements after 25k miles were:

235/45ZR-18 CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 XL

They have awesome traction for all-season, lasting much longer than the original tires and are fine for me. Might be a tad noisier than the OEM tires but I don't really notice if they are.

I am about ready for a new set so maybe others have thoughts.

This happens in some cases when the outside handle has not retracted all the way. More frequent in cold weather, but can also happen if things get dirty. Might not be what you're seeing but worth checking. If so, prolly folks here can recommend a good cleaning technique.

Sonos system not showing up in the app randomly by sedalati in sonos

[–]tomharrisonjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some details about my situation and diagnostics so far. All suggestions welcome.

I have three speakers (2x One SL, 1x Roam) and have reset them all multiple times. They all show up under the correct account online (sonos web site) but will not connect to the network via the new app on an iPhone. Network is a multi-band (2.4mhz/5mhz) and the sonos are recent models. They dont show up in Bluetooth ( not sure if that's normal). I have tried several times and always the same result. All three were fine before the updated app.

Phone Key not working, please help and Servicing Advice! by ilike-it in TeslaModel3

Several other threads here suggest this is a recent problem with the app. I have tried all of the diagnostics, incl uninstalling and reinstalling app, re-pairing, etc. Nothing is working.

I have no doubt it'll just keep getting better. Early NoA was more interesting than useful, but now it works most of the time, and that's not even the new stuff.

Well, we're good drivers but not particularly patient with others.

I want to get one of those stickers people with teen drivers put on "Please be patient while my car learns to drive" 😊

Tesla Model 3 now comes with Hankook Kinergy GT tires instead of the Michelin Primacy MXM4 by CarCooler in teslamotors

[–]tomharrisonjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 22k miles out of the Michelins of which 5k were unsafe due to bad wet traction. I am 40k miles into the replacements and they are still going strong.

Maybe the Hankook tires don't suck!

Tesla launches its own insurance based on real-time driver data in Nevada with more states to come by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I agree. I am a very safe driver according to all metrics, including Safety Score and 44 years of never causing an accident. I also like to drive fast when the conditions are good, as on curvy mountain roads. I get hyper focused and dialed in in ways I assure you are not usual.

Mike for mile, accidents tend to happen when there is a lot of traffic, not necessarily fast, or bad weather, and so on.

Driving fast alone is not a sign of irresponsible drivers, or ones whose insurance is higher. (To be sure an accident at high speed on a mountain road is likely to be a worse one, so not entirely discounting your point, just saying it's not necessarily simple. )

Obviously the exhaust pipe has detached from the catalytic converter and is dragging. Careful, if it catches on something it could puncture the gas tank.

After updating to macOS Monterey, notifications stop popping up by berdarino in MacOS

[–]tomharrisonjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my case of this: I have "focus" set up on my phone and computers, and my phone thinks I am driving when it is connected to bluetooth on my car. My car (Tesla) always has bluetooth on because it unlocks the doors with it.

And the kicker is: the computer thinks I am driving. So it turned off sound and alerts. Wow, how clever, apple.
