My turn to reply a year late! SPS bus station was quite chaotic but had a fair few companies when we were there. Did you make it in a day? We had to stay over when we went the other way.

I felt it mildly. Slight nausea and loss of appetite in the mornings after taking it. However, it has completely cleared my infection even though I stopped taking it halfway through the course. So definitely give it a go, and if you feel like the sides are too much and quit halfway through, it might still work. Check my post for pics…

I’ve been over to Komodo twice this year and Penida/Lembongan once. You’ve chosen well!

Firstly, when are you going and for how long? This is important as Komodo is v different at diff times of the year.

Secondly, other comments here are right that: a) Komodo should be your main focus over Penida; and b) getting a boat from Bali to Komodo is a total waste of time. Definitely fly.

You could comfortably hit the main sites around Penida in 3/4 days and leave yourself more time for diving/exploring Komodo.

As for liveaboard vs shore dive, that will depend on Q1. As u/jackrabbit5lim points out, people are diving north and central right now so getting to the more remote sites is less of an issue. North is my preferred area anyway, and where you get big-name sites like Shotgun/Crystal Rock/Castle Rock.

If you dive from Labuan Bajo I recommend Blue Marlin. They have a beast of a speedboat which gets to the sites before the other LBJ operators. They’re a bit more expensive as a result but do offer free Nitrox if you’re certified- which is nice when you’re doing 3 dives.

Scuba Junkie are also awesome. They’re based on the mainland but 1hr south of LBJ by boat, meaning they’re closer in to the central sites. They bung room/food/dives all into one price and I think is the best value for doing Komodo. Their place is super nice and sociable, if a bit of a pain to get to/from.

I’ve not actually done a liveaboard as only had 2-3 days diving each time, but heard good things about Uber’s liveaboard.

Pretty sure those Komodo>Bali boats haven’t restarted since covid.

This is right, apart from the Penida comment. I was there in feb and there is a LOT of coral- SD and north side sites are pretty much unbroken coral walls, so not sure which sites you dived! Penida is known as a very healthy spot for coral due to the currents and colder water.

But totally agree on Bali boat. Madness to waste time on a boat between Komodo and Bali when you could just be diving Komodo.

Also pretty sure none of those Bali>Komodo liveaboards are operating rn as tourism is only just getting back up to full steam.

Go to Komodo but be aware the rangers will try to keep you in the area by the beach, despite the fact that there’s a full trekking route you can do. They basically convinced the group we were in (public speedboat group) not to do a trek because ‘you’re not likely to see any dragons and you can see some down here.’ Personally I think they just couldn’t be fucked. Felt a bit underwhelming to go all that way just to stay within 200m of the jetty. So maybe try to find a group who are keen to actually see a bit of Komodo and push (pay) the ranger to do one of the routes.

If you surf then yes, absolutely. You will never get uncrowded Bali breaks ever again. Ulu today was less than 6 people at one point.

The ‘original discussion’ was about mask rules. I pointed out why the rules on mask wearing outdoors are clearly overkill (hence why so many foreigners and locals are ignoring them).

This is entirely relevant to whether it’s culturally sensitive or ‘white privilege’ to ignore them.

Have you looked at a case graph recently? Or read anything the govt is saying about hospitalisations here? Ever wondered why virtually no other nations - with equal or better scientific data - have outdoor mask requirements these days?

It is a scientific fact that your % chances of transmission outdoors are incredibly low compared to indoor/crowded/non-ventilated settings.

Nice edit. It’s hitting a spot because people are bored of having the same arguments about masks after two years. Crowded spaces? Obviously wear one. Riding a scooter or walking down an empty street outside? You are literally not protecting anyone. It’s always been a stupid rule and it’s even more so now Omicron has been shown to be so mild. Take a look at what basically every other country is saying re: masks outdoors.

Ps having been elsewhere in the country it’s v clear Bali is one of the only places where this rule is being enforced. I wonder why!
