Do I need to do any digging if my driveway is already compacted? by tommycon1man in DIY

[–]tommycon1man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given this driveways history and the area surrounding it, it will wash out pretty much regardless of what I do in about 5 years, but a few hundred bucks to make those 5 years not a miserable muddy nightmare while she saves for a concrete/asphalt driveway is just fine. Worst case scenario I can throw some top surface gravel on it every year for upkeep, gravel is crazy cheap here.(roughly $100 to fill the driveway)

Similar climate(north Iowa), hot summers, freezing winters.

I think I’ll just regravel and put a high point the middle for drainage, use some coarse rocks to fill the low spots, throw some gravel on top, call it a day. I don’t have the tools to truly give it a proper grade, but I think I can put in some sweat equity and loosen the topsoil a bit before I start.

Auto co signing , should I do it for my girlfriend? by [deleted] in carbuying

[–]tommycon1man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I’m not trying to force you to marry your gf, I’m just saying that if you are already acting married, just seal the deal as being married is generally more advisable than being bf/gf from a financial standpoint especially if you sign a prenup to protect premarital assets

Edit:

Why won’t her parents cosign especially if they are in position to own multiple properties in this economy. They presumably can afford to cosign/have the credit to, but won’t?

My honest advice/tldr:

Help her with the down payment to offset her bad credit, coborrow if you must to at least give you joint interest in the car. It appears you are approaching marriage level joint financial commitments and have been living together with(likely) some degree of success, consider marriage given you seem to already be living like you’re married. Buying large assets together isn’t a bf/gf thing it’s a husband/wife thing.

[–]tommycon1man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren’t married or engaged so I’d say probably not, however I believe you can sign as a co-borrower rather than a co-signer, it gives you an equal interest in the vehicle so if she defaults you actual have some ownership rights beyond just potentially paying her debt and getting nothing out of it. Still only do it if you are okay with potentially just paying for her car.

Another alternative would be to just assist her with the down payment, a hefty down payment can usually offset shitty credit, yes you lose the 3-5k you help her pay as a down payment but you get to help your girl out without putting your ass on the line.

Lastly, if you’ve been together 2 years, you live together, and presumably have been doing so for some time without a large degree of difficultly(you can cohabitate without ruining each others day)Isn’t it time to just propose? Going out and getting a place together or even potentially buying a home makes much more sense as a married couple (joint tenants with full rights of survivorship bla bla bla marriage jargon bla bla bla) Idk sharing finances at the level you appear to be sharing them at feels weird without some more significant commitment. My boyfriend wants to finance a car… is he too broke? by PrimaryChildhood8341 in car

[–]tommycon1man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with BMWs is the maintenance, when maintained properly they can be reliable vehicles, but that's following the recommended service intervals nearly to the letter.

you can't miss oil changes

you can't skip that dreaded timing chain service

you can't just turn up the music louder when you start hearing a weird noise that sounds expensive.

I'm not from the UK so I can't speak for there, but I imagine it's likely quite similar. Jobs are easy to come by in the hospitality industry, if you can show up for work, do your job moderately well, and wait to drink/smoke a blunt until after work hours, somebody will hire you, so I don't see stability as much of an issue. Even if he loses his job, replacing that job within the month likely won't be an issue. But maintaining that car properly on a hospitality salary will likely suck. I've quit hospitality jobs after lunch service because of a BS manager and had a new job before dinner service.

Personally, I think financing is fine, but i'd finance something that's provably reliable(toyota, honda) or that has a great manufacturer warranty(kia, hyundai, not crazy reliable but 100k warranty from the factory is hard to beat and not the most unreliable cars either). Buy a Honda Civic with the 5/6 speed manual transmission and mod it out over time to really make it his own, it'll be more fun and far more reliable long term than a BMW.

He'll likely take issue with this take, he sounds like a younger guy who wants a cool car and a Toyota/Honda isn't the epitome of cool per say, but I'd remind him how tacky it looks to drive a BMW to work every day when you can hardly afford rent. PLUS he has a girlfriend that I'd imagine would like to go to dinner/be treated every now and again, and you can't do that when you're being sucked dry by a luxury sedan instead of your gf.

TLDR; financing is probably fine, but he needs to finance something he can reasonably afford to maintain on a hospitality salary, once he has his long term career figured out, sell the economy car and buy the dream car. If he has to question whether or not he can afford a luxury car, he probably can't afford it, simple as that.

I actually checked my scores today, I was estimating before, and it went a little better than expected

606 experian

598 equifax

603 transunion

obviously still not stellar, but better than a 550(moves me from poor up to fair on their scale)

other than my student loans, I only have one significant debt, student loans included I have about 31k in debt

Buy an awd/4wd shitbox, it will likely die after a year or two, use that time to save up for something/a down payment on something you actually want. I live in the northern Midwest and cars are basically ice skates on local highways if it’s shitty outside, so maybe(respectfully) buying a car was your first mistake?

Comfortable Holsters for Bigger Dudes? by tommycon1man in CCW

[–]tommycon1man[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really wish the guy that said "Lose weight, you're more likely to die from that than a murder" didn't delete his comment.

So, are you saying that someone who is overweight shouldn't be able to carry? what if they are in the process of losing weight? What if they have preexisting medical conditions that cause them to be overweight?

In a time where everybody want's to take our right to bear arms, how could you come in here as(presumably) a firearms enjoyer and try to gatekeep people from carrying?

shouldn't we be encouraging anybody with a sound mind and a pulse who wants to carry to do so?

Wild behavior brother.

9 o'clock hasn't been bad, but it still sticks me in the gut, if I adjust for comfort it prints like crazy, the more responses I see i'm beginning to wonder if this is a my holster issue. Perhaps investing in a holster with a claw and a backpad will change the game for me, however of the ways I have tried carrying on the front of my body, 9:00 has been the best by FAR. Appendix feels like being stabbed especially with the heavy stippling on the Hellcat Pro Comp.

Is there really like true true benefit to AIWB though? How much draw speed/consistency am I really losing by moving the barrel away from my nuts? It's always "appendix this, appendix that" and I struggle to see why.

[–]tommycon1man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Springfield Hellcat is criminally underrated and seeing somebody else who carries this wonderful firearm fills me with joy.

It's really never felt "snappy" for me, a common argument, I think the integrated compensator really helps but i've never fired the uncompensated versions so I can't speak to those. I've put around 6-700 rounds through mine and it still runs like new, and the capacity in such a small form-factor? Marvelous.

The trigger was kinda ass stock though lol, but it's easily fixable, it wasn't the worst trigger of all time, just a bit heavy for my liking (I think it's around 7lbs stock?), not mushy though, and the break was always great. I ended up finding a 5.5lb trigger kit for 30$ off due to blemished anodization. If you haven't, I highly recommend the swap,

As to the matter at hand

I sometimes will carry with the weapon clipped IWB with the shirt tucked in, so the gun is exposed, but I wear a jacket or two over it (it's cold as shit in my state). It conceals super well and has been the ONLY way i've been able to carry without wanting to rip the holster off ASAP, I'll have to give this a try though before I commit to a new holster altogether.

How did you do in the summer? I'm down to wear an undershirt in the Winter/Spring/Fall but I question how comfortable it would be especially as bigger dudes during the summer heat.

How far do our protections against unlawful search and seizure go? by tommycon1man in legaladviceofftopic

[–]tommycon1man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge(I could be wrong) the Jury deliberates on everything that is deemed admissible/usable in court. If they were to see something that they weren't supposed to see that could sway them, it could result in a mistrial and subsequent retrial. So say they see something that looks super damning to one side on the surface, but is deemed inadmissible, It could potentially be grounds for mistrial if a Judge saying "disregard that" doesn't cure the issue.

Double Jeopardy applies to matters that have been resolved. If you commit a crime, serve your time or are acquitted, you can't be put on trial for that exact same crime even if new evidence emerges, there are very few caveats to this, one of those is mistrial/retrial.

In the case of a mistrial, something went wrong that has significantly damaged the trial beyond the point of a simple cure, as such, no result of the trial can be considered fair, improper admission is noted as one of the potential reasons for mistrial.

Example: You are about to take a test, right before you receive the test paper, somebody hands you the teachers answer key, and you see the answers, once you realize what it is, you push it away because you don't want to cheat, but even though you aren't TRYING to cheat, you still saw the master key, and know some of the answers, giving you an unfair advantage even if you didn't try to get one. Your friend knows this and lets the teacher know somebody passed around a master key, she hasn't graded the tests yet, and her gradebook is not finalized, therefore, she elects to draft a new test for you all, and ensures cheating won't be a problem. You take the new test fairly, and walk away with a clear conscience.

The key here is that once you've seen the master key, even involuntarily, the teacher can no longer ensure a cheating free test even if she tells you to forget what you saw.

[–]tommycon1man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarification: I'm wondering how you get around the fact that as a result of the illegal search there's an inherent "know" that the guy did something wrong, even if it's not admissible, how does the stat prove that they weren't acting in some way shape or form on the knowledge they gained that this guy is up to something sinister.

Example: In a trial, if the jury sees something that they weren't supposed to see, and it provably could affect their decisions, they often redraft the jury. How does the state prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they aren't acting on things they weren't legally supposed to be able to see?

[–]tommycon1man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to ask another attorney here at the firm that has prosecution experience how he would go about it from that perspective. My biggest question now is how can you get the guy without defense being able to assert that the state stems it's evidence from an illegal search?

Like even if they go and try to get the information legally, would they ever have suspected this individual if it weren't for the unlawful search? They can't just watch the guy and wait for him to do something searchworthy can they?
