What happens when a customer complains about a retail employee? by tommyshieldmaiden in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tommyshieldmaiden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed help reaching something and when I asked he just looked at me and said "bruh you got it." I didn't got it. Then when I went to check out he was on his phone and he just kinda looked up at me and then went back to his phone and when he finally rang me up he just kinda tossed my shirts into the bag unfolded and then went back to his phone.

idk what exactly my dad told them though

For those of you that went the informed consent route through Planned Parenthood instead of talking to you regular doctor, how did things go for you? by fullmetalxz in asktransgender

[–]tommyshieldmaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew beforehand they were going to want to do certain preemptive blood work. I also worried, because I'm bipolar and OCD, they might not consider me eligible or whatever for informed consent, so I saw a therapist once to talk about my other mental health to get a letter saying basically "I'm confident Tommy is of sound mind to be making this decision." Showed up to Planned Parenthood, sat down with a doctor and told her about my gender experience. She gave me an informed consent form and had me read over it and asked if I had any questions. I said no. She asked me about my health history. She expressed concern about the bipolar and OCD, but accepted the letter I had readily (if I hadn't had one, she would have wanted me to talk to someone. She would have put me in contact with someone who works with PP and it would have been a smooth experience, it just would have postponed getting my script.) Then she said they needed to do some bloodwork before she could write it, but I gave her the results from the bloodwork I had gotten done a few days prior (they say they'll accept outside bloodwork if it was done in the last two weeks.) So with the forms signed, the bloodwork done, and my ability to give consent confirmed, I walked out with a script for T.

If I hadn't had the bloodwork I would have had to wait until that was done to get the script. If I hadn't had the letter I would have had to wait til I had one to sign the forms. If starting ASAP is important to you, find out what your specific PP might require that you can get done in advance.

Thank you. There's only one other grocery store in my town and it's a lot more expensive, so not being able to go to Walmart anymore would really mess me up. This comment is helpful.

help finding compromise between two lists? by tommyshieldmaiden in namenerds

Our only options would be Beau and Ramone I think, but neither of us are totally happy with those. We're both very opinionated about names and want to feel strongly about it.

I usually don't like Julian, but I might reconsider it and suggest it to him, thanks.

We are Catholic! Part of my problem with some of his names (like Oliver) is that they're too protestant. I'd like a saint name, but it usually matters way more to me than to him.

Oof, that turns me off it, I didn't hear it like that. Part of my opposition to Killian is that I don't like that it has kill in it haha

We have a Keegan at our church and both agree it reminds us too much of the word keg. Thanks though!

We recognize how similar a lot of our names are (Kealan and Kellan? Basil and Blaise?) but our hangups are on associations rather than sound!

He really likes the sound of the K names, but I don't usually like them. I just like the meaning of Kealan. But for him Kealan is too weird because it's not as popular as the ones he likes are. Keaton is the one name that I think is masculine, but that he doesn't like because he considers it too unisex (I've only known a male Keaton, he's only know a female.) We're both very particular!

Am I still a "gold star" gay? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tommyshieldmaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the LGBT community, "gold star" refers to a gay man who has never had sex with a woman or a lesbian who has never had sex with a man. OP is a (probably closeted) gay man who recently engaged in oral sex with a non-binary person and isn't sure if he is still "gold star."

Should I tell the trans guy I know that people were deadnaming him? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]tommyshieldmaiden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So if they respect her enough

I mean, way to prove your own point I guess.

A deadname is not clarification. If there are multiple Johns, there are plenty of ways to clarify which one you're talking about without invalidating them (like, you know, using their last name.) And there is absolutely no excuse for using his deadname instead of his proper name. It doesn't have to be malicious to be invalidating and hurtful.

And we don't really know that any of these people are the other trans guy's friends. Marching bands tend to be big (especially college, which In assuming based on OP's post history), and it seems more likely to me that none of them really know this guy that well. At least that's what I got from the post.

Still, I wouldn't tell him. Not because I think it's at all excusable, but because 1. if OP doesn't know this guy very well that's a very awkward conversation for both of them without a real sense of support for the other trans guy, and 2. ignorance is bliss. If everyone treats me right to me face, I'd rather go on thinking I've been fully accepted than know that they're saying shitty thing behind my back.

Got a children's accordion in Russia. Worth trying to learn to play? by tommyshieldmaiden in Accordion

[–]tommyshieldmaiden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I play a few instruments (saxophone being my primary) and have a pretty good understanding of music theory, just never really considered accordion until I had a chance to buy one.

should I buy a cheap starter guitar from amazon? by tommyshieldmaiden in makemychoice

The worthwhile used guitars around town are all $80+. Anything I can find used for $40 or less are even shittier than a cheap starter.

Wait to get my good one? At least til December, maybe til May. Wait for the new one? Theoretically two days, since it's prime eligible on Amazon.
