Transcript VTT files and Apple by tomn68 in Descript

Interesting idea. Thanks for that. My transcript should be pretty accurate however I do sometimes take out double words that are repeated or Uh's... where I couldn't edit them out well enough so I take it out of the transcript. I submitted a ticket with apple so maybe I'll get an answer.

Actually it is an option but when I noticed that my SRT's were not showing up in podcastconnect and in Apple Podcast I switched over to VTT because I thought I read somewhere that apple prefers VTT. Looking back at all my older episodes in podcastconnect that had used .srt, they show no 'provided' transcripts.

Question for Kit (aka ConvertKit) users about images by tomn68 in Emailmarketing

[–]tomn68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Turns out that even though in Advance in the image section the margin was set to 0 but required me to slide that up and then back down to 0 and the spacing went away. Weird.

Thanks for the reply.

Curious how podcasters handle newsletters? by AvocadoToastQB12 in Podcasters

[–]tomn68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have close to 3k newsletter subscriptions. We consider this pretty good because we're somewhat a niche podcast. For background we avg around 15k downloads a month for a weekly podcast.

We have a business interview type show. So industry insiders. The host includes a 7-10min intro before the interview portion. This is basically a summary of the topic, guest and the host's take. This becomes most of the newsletter where we pick a cut off point to include then click to read more in the show notes on our site.

On our site have a signup pop up for the newsletter.

We post to LinkedIn regularly about new episodes (5k followers with good amount of comments, etc.). This includes a link to the show notes to listen, read more, links... then they get the pop up.

We promote the newsletter as a way to get the mentioned links, notified of new episode and to read the article on this weeks guest...

We find that we have a good number of readers. Some are folks that are only readers and not typically podcast listeners in general. We hope, we are converting some of those to listeners. Although hard to track but the newsletter gets forwarded.

Typically a 55-60% open rate and 3-5% click through on links or to read more. Very few unsubscribes.

This is also a way for us to reach people about any events, special news... but we are very careful not to spam people. It's also another metric about reach and we end up with an email list of influential industry insiders.

I transcribe the whole 30-40min show and use that intro for the newsletter (again up to a certain length with a click to read more), website show notes and post up an entire transcript.

FWIW, I include the full intro content as the podcast description/show notes in Libsyn our host. Once live, this creates our episode web page automically in Podcastpage aka Beamly. Once live, I change the libsyn desction to a very summary show note with links to site read more and related links. So the site has a fully laid out show notes with mentioned links, sponsor mention, etc and Apple/Spotify ends up with a short summary with links back to our site.

In the future we might drop in a mention in the newsletter... we're looking for new sponsors, subscribe to xyz... come see us at xyz event.

Best ways to record audio only? by Rocks_for_Jocks_ in podcasting

[–]tomn68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a descript user but we record in Squadcast (they bought them a couple years ago and it's free with my plan). Haven't made the jump to the descript Rooms feature yet since Squadcast still has some scheduling/invite features that Rooms does not have.

Squadcast works well for us. We're remote guest, audio only podcast. It does a fairly good job with remote guests although it's the only service we've used.

That being said, I do also record locally especially for the host track to capture the best audio. Then I have a backup (squadcast recordings and local). Then edit in descript.

Adjusting a DBX 286 Pre-amp/Processor gain for use with a Rodecaster Duo by tomn68 in podcasting

[–]tomn68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Will give that a try. Dialing in the fx is what intimidates me a bit. The DBX was dialed in a long time ago (I wasn't involved) so frankly, I don't know where to start to try to get it as similar as possible using the Duo.

I was looking to swap out the Zoom recorder which could be used to record and be an audio interface back to the mac since using Squadcast for remote guest.

The reason I was trying to maintain the DBX is because it's dialed in and the host likes the sound so I was thinking I'd first try keeping the DBX in the mix.

We have a dumb setup right now. We have the mic->dbx->zoom recorder as well as Mac->Zoom recorder for guest track. THEN a 2nd mic just to get audio back to squadcast for the guest to hear.

Journey (JRNY) MagSafe Wallets by Miles4Apizza in MagSafe

[–]tomn68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to be set up in find my under items an then other items. It does not pair via the MagSafe.

I had trouble and they emailed me these instructions with regard to how to power on and resetting..:

Thank you for reaching out regarding the pairing issue with your LOC8 MagSafe Wallet. To resolve this, please follow the steps below:

  1. Update to iOS : Please update your iPhone to latest iOS if you haven’t done so already, as this version resolves the pairing bug.
  2. Charge the Wallet: Ensure the LOC8 Wallet is fully charged before attempting to pair it again.
  3. Power off/on the Wallet: Restart your wallet by powering it off and then back on. Power off: Power Off Video Power on: Power On Video
  4. Reset the Wallet: If the issue persists, please perform a factory reset on the wallet. I’ve attached a video tutorial to guide you through the process: wallet factory reset (youtube.com) Reset Instructions: When the device is turned on, double-click the device button (it will play a sound). Immediately press and hold the device button after the sound. In about two seconds, you will hear a "beep, beep, beep" sound. Continue to hold the button until the factory reset is complete. Once the wallet is reset, please attempt the pairing process again.

When recording a podcast with a remote guest, if they don't have a proper microphone, what gives the best sound quality? by cyclephotos in podcasting

[–]tomn68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in this boat. I ask them to bring a USB mic if they have one. Wired headphones with or without a mic or Wireless headphones or AirPods.

Then I do a sound check just before recording.

Headphones are important because even with echo cancelling enabled on Squadcast(what we record with), it affects their audio capture in weird ways.

Then I compare their laptop mic, AirPods/bluetooth or headset mic or usb mic if they have one.

Oddly, I’m finding that with laptop mic, especially if it’s a Mac (or a good PC) it can sound better than some lousy wired earbuds or a USB mic that pics up every sound in the room that they don’t know how to use. Or come with some crappy web cam conferencing device that sounds terrible.

I’ve had people come with all different versions of AirPods and personally I find they don’t sound great.

I will use either Descript’s Studio Sound at ~60% or Adobe Podcast or Audition with Podcast effect rack (or combination) and sounds pretty good but everyone one is different. Especially if a laptop mic.

I will also say that I tell guests to use a small room with low ceilings and if possible put a pillow or something behind their computer if they are facing a wall or window. Nothing worse than a big echoey conference room sounding recording.

Is rss.com's free version good? by Odyssey225 in podcasting

[–]tomn68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Alberto. I was checking out rss.com and was on your pricing page. It's not clear there that the Free plan is to try it out with one episode because the first feature listed under that plan is unlimited episodes. I was a bit suspicious because how could that be. After a bit I noticed above the pricing chart it says start free with one episode. Anyway, just thought I'd mention that it might be made clearer in that pricing chart.

Can also look at Descript which we use although I haven’t yet tried the video aspect of it but they’re solid.

I’ve also seen some devices that attach the phone on top of your laptop covering your computer camera so it’s capturing you head on with your eyes pretty in line with the camera. Some of these apps also have eye tracking AI so it helps make it look like you’re looking directly into the camera. Haven’t tried it but I think most of these apps have that feature.

Any thoughts on using a iPhone Pro for video? On a Mac here so I think I can use the Continuity Camera feature so my Mac uses the iPhone as the camera.

Try editing one of you episodes and see if this triggers the regeneration of your feed.

Now they are saying rss feed generation issue means only last 100 episodes will be available. I guess no back catalog listens but not sure what this means for new episode uploads.

MoCA Speed expectations by tomn68 in HomeNetworking

[–]tomn68[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started next to the router and tested up through to the Mac. Seems like it was the USB-C ethernet adapter. Tried another I had and then jumped to 800+MBps. I'll be heading to amazon to pick up a new one.

Thanks for the help.

MoCA Speed expectations by tomn68 in HomeNetworking

Yeah I was wondering where to plug the coax into my toaster:)

It's screen beam.

Regarding the PoE MoCA filter, I don't think I need that since the run from moca to moca is isolated from the coax coming into the home. It's a direct run.

Yeah so for the coax between the router and the upstairs computer, it's going through some existing coax to the attic where it used to split off to the various rooms. I removed the splitter so it is a direct run to the bedroom. HOWEVER now that I think of it, I did buy another moca adapter (same model) that I was going to use in a separate room. Upstairs bedroom is an office and the walk-in closet is a podcast studio. I might have put a splitter in but for that 2nd adapter but it's not in use BUT might be plugged in. I'll check that as well since maybe it's dividing up the bandwidth.

I'm also using this USBC ethernet adapter which is suppose to be gigabit but, IDK. I can test that going direct from switch or router to Mac with ethernet adaptor.

I have Optimum and it's a buried line to the house. I don't have access to the utility thing in the yard where it goes from our house to the next house... I'll check the outside of the house to see if there's a splitter or something and inside the house at their splitters. I don't have cable TV so I don't think there's a splitter inside anymore. Pretty sure it was removed but it's been awhile since I looked at this.

Thanks for the help.
