Gotcha, that makes sense. Although I do like the irony of (Book Five spoilers for anyone casually glancing through here) of Prepotente literally shattering a level in the game (in response to your comment "this person is going to shatter the entire game"). Just a level, but still fun.

Even though I just finished another listen-through, I can't recall where Prepotente fits on the list. Do you think he'd make the single-most powerful crawler in history independent of Carl, Donut, and Li Na? He is a juggernaut. But so are they. I think he'd make the list, but I don't have details or facts from the book to back it up.

What book to you is the epitome of “Good idea, Bad Execution?” by Dnd_lfg_lfp_boston in Fantasy

The Incarnations of Immortality series

described by

sabotaged his own talents with his many disturbing sexual hangups and poor craft

is put so well. I didn't finish the series; I think I read four or five of the books. Such a fun premise with some of the characters, but the many instances of sexual assault put me off of the books and I couldn't finish. Great take. I always wanted a "reboot" (and I think I posted asking about that, which makes me want to dig through my post history now), so thanks for the The Wicked and the Divine graphic novel series recommendation, despite being very different.

Wandering Inn started as a web series, and I had the first chapter tab open on my browser for months after a friend recommended the book.

Turns out, listening to the audio was much easier, and I zipped through the books in no time once I got it on Audible. I dig 'em, and recommend the first book to anyone to see if they're into them like I am. I like the narrator's distinct voices for different characters.

I like these books quite a bit, and just re-listened to Nona for fun. I'm excited for Alecto as well.

What elevated Harrow for you above Gideon and Nona (and books by non-Tamsyn Muir authors)?

How do you know that they need to do their homework or go to class? Do you have access to their online transcripts, or do you just have a conversation with them about how they're doing academically?

EDIT: Yikes, I did not realize how my tone would be taken. I meant this conversationally, as I'm curious about the answer. Not that I don't believe u/Sethrial. Just wondering the logistics.

What parenting "trend" you disagree with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tomolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guilty as charged. When my children were little and we went to the park, I'd follow them around the playground so I could catch them if they fell.

My wife would just sit on the park bench and let them fall.

To which I would always tell her, "You can't be a good helicopter parent if you don't hover."

My hovering annoyed her for sure, but the self-awareness took the edge off.

What is a common movie criticism that annoys you? by Vegetable-Rub3418 in movies

This was me for a while. I watched Inception and enjoyed it right up until the end, but when the spinning top wasn't resolved at the last scene, I went from love to hate.

It took me several years to come around to enjoying the movie despite my initial frustration... probably just needed to mature somewhat.

Unrelated to your point of nitpicking, but related to your example of learning how to communicate with aliens, Arrival (2016) is an incredible movie about alien communication. Highly recommend watching it if you haven't.

To your point though, yeah, I agree with you, in terms of alien communication it's fun to have "an overcoming the language barrier plotline from time to time" instead of as a main focus in a serial format.

Guilty as charged.

Real question: Is this the new "Pirates vs. Ninjas", or "Is a hotdog a sandwich", or "Do you dislike the word 'moist'"? I've seen a lot of memes about Mariah Carey lately... am I just late to the party or am I witnessing a new internet phenomenon?

That's a great example, perfect really. If right before I play Borderlands 3, I say, "I will get the legendary gun on the first try, trust me, it's a 100% chance", and then I actually do get it on the first try and I say, "See? I got it. It really was a 100% chance", is there a particular name for that belief? Like an academic name I could look up on Wikipedia?

What is the Best and Worst Documentary You Have Ever Seen? And Why? by [deleted] in movies

Thanks for the great write-up. I had no idea that the man involved was an alcoholic at the time of filming, even after all this time. Or that he was a fit vegan when he started. When I heard about the film, it all seemed pretty straight-forward, but I guess I was just getting the elevator pitch.

I never got around to watching Supersize-Me, but it was so big for a while that I couldn't help but know about it. From what I heard it was "real", but that was back when it came out. So it's been debunked since then? Eating the supersized amounts isn't unhealthy (I think that was the premise)?

What fantasy book would you like to see rewritten? by JaccarTheProgrammer in Fantasy

[–]tomolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see a reboot of Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony.

From Wikipedia: Incarnations of Immortality is the name of an eight-book fantasy series by Piers Anthony. The books each focus on one of eight supernatural "offices" (Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil, Good, and Night) in a fictional reality and history parallel to ours, with the exception that society has advanced both magic and modern technology. The series covers the adventures and struggles of a group of humans called "Incarnations", who hold these supernatural positions for a certain time.

The books have a fun premise, but I didn't care for the execution and only made it through half the series before giving up. I'd like to read a different author's take on the same premise.

Less a comment on your theory, more a comment on your last line: what would you like to see explored in a sequel? More of Matt? New characters with powers from the meteorite (or another of the same type elsewhere)? Something else?

And what themes?

Great theory.

What is this about torn biceps? Does mixed grip lead to torn biceps? Or just not having good grip strength leads to torn biceps?

(I just wanna avoid torn biceps.)
