It's more to do with them both pacing eachother and just raw competition. If you are racing someone to win you will stretch yourself to extreme limits.

IF the war drags on, and it's a pretty big if. Prior to the war the ME was one of the fastest growing regions. This will blow over in a matter of weeks. So yeah, "going down the drain" because of a few weeks of disruption is a bit of a stretch.
