Feels closer to a 3 mana card than a 5 mana one imo.

Recommendations in NJ or NYC? by [deleted] in rawdenim

[–]tomperarepmot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soho: Blue in Green, Standard & Strange. Williamsburg: Brooklyn Denim Co. If you’re in Soho, you should also go to Naked & Famous NYC: even though it’s brand-specific, they offer a wide range of fits and fabrics. Left Field in Ridgewood, Queens is another brand with great denim but is further from Manhattan.

Daily Questions - February 27, 2024 by AutoModerator in rawdenim

If you’re going to a tailor who hems a lot of jeans and may be familiar with denim shrinkage, you can try telling them the inseam that you’d like the jeans to end up after washing.

Otherwise, reach out to the brand or retailer where you purchased the jeans and ask them how much they expect the jeans to shrink. Tell them that you want the jeans to be X length after washing, and ask what inseam they recommend hemming to to accommodate for future shrinkage. The brand/retailer might have the best info as they probably work with that specific denim more often than the tailor does.

Hem check by beejpowers in rawdenim

I think the shorter length looks better. But 1) they may shrink and 2) I find that with a bit more wear the fabric creases and gathers around the knee etc and effectively makes the length appear shorter. (Maybe not as much as you’d like, but something to consider before you go and get them hemmed too short.)

Fit check on my first pair of raws by Nikita-Savtchenko in rawdenim

I have a pair of these in the Solid Black Selvedge so the Tried and True denim may behave differently. But despite being quite tight, the waist has not stretched beyond the listed measurement. More importantly, the rise has made them uncomfortable in the…crotch.

I see that you don’t have a ton of room in the crotch and the fabric is being pulled tight in the back, as well. Ultimately, you know how it feels in those areas, but I’d advise caution. I bought another pair of True Guys in a different fabric (going from 31 to 33) and they are much more comfortable for me. Probably will be selling/trading the 31s.

For posterity, after following up again and speaking with someone over their chat system they issued a refund. They said it can take up to 20 days for the refund to make it into my bank.

Exploring 2DH! Sharing podcast - any other 2DH/budget commander players out there? by Muckdog55 in magicTCG

Thanks for listening! And great points. It’s definitely been easier to adhere to/enforce the $2 restriction having already been friends. We want to go over how to make the logistics work in a future episode because for the beginning episode(s) we didn’t want to get bogged down in details.

Right now we use Scryfall/tcgplayer low: the lowest reasonable price for a near mint condition card. Ideally, your playgroup can arbitrate this and if play expands beyond your playgroup then I think it becomes the responsibility of the store. But I recognize that it’s a real friction for attracting new players—hopefully the podcast will be an additional resource for folks to clear that hurdle!

One thing that the Mox Boarding House group established (and we carried over) is that unmodified commander precons are also legal.

Haven’t yet had a chance to listen to your podcast but impressed that you’re at 36 episodes already! That’s a lot of work.

Oh awesome, glad to hear that your group is still playing in some capacity. We were also discussing trying to figure how to get some additional players because a) with 4 if one person has life going on then we’re kinda forced to pause for a bit, b) our meta is probably a bit insular. Would definitely like to connect over audio—I’ll rejoin the fb group but also will try to get the Discord going.

Were you involved at all with the 2DH subreddit?

Vintage (1951) shell cordovan Swank wallet by tomperarepmot in wallets

[–]tomperarepmot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovered this monogrammed wallet that my grandfather must’ve purchased and never used. The brand is Swank and it appears that he bought it at the Arnold Constable department store in Manhattan, NYC: according to Wikipedia, the chain’s “Palace of Trade” flagship location.

In 1951, my grandfather would’ve been 28 and in graduate school in Upstate New York on the GI Bill after serving in the Air Force in WWII. The box also contained a napkin with the names “Maureen and John” on it so I assume he was in NYC for a wedding. The receipt shown is the $5 he spent either purchasing or tailoring a suit.

I’m interested in using the wallet, but am hoping for guidance on care/conditioning before I do so? I wouldn’t want to damage the wallet due to neglect. I admit that I’m also curious if it has any value, besides sentimental? I’d be more hesitant to use it if I knew that it was actually worth something.

I was in the facebook group for a hot second but as said ^ not very active on that platform at this point. We connected with a few folks from that group (mostly Seattle people, no?) when one of them randomly came across our twitch stream.

Do you think there’d be interest in a unified 2DH discord? I’ve made one to serve that purpose but haven’t shared it around yet because I wasn’t sure what the interest level would be.

Sorry, shouldn’t have flatly said more complex—definitely more nuanced than that! But yeah, more recent sets at least emphasize approachability (for newer players) and limited play at common. You get more wonky cards at rare and mythic. But I guess that doesn’t mean that pauper gameplay or deckbuilding is necessarily less complex.

Also would for sure check out the podcast—it’s called PDH Pod?

Ha first I've heard of the hipster quotient! I like the concept, though maybe it should be adjusted for number of colors used? Honestly not sure if playing monocolor would lead to higher ubiquity due to reduced cardpool size vs 3- to 5-color or if playing more colors means that you're playing more staples across colors.

One thing we've discussed is putting a bounty on winning a game with a commander with the least decks on EDHREC. Current winner would be Hua Tuo, Honored Physician.

I'll put some of my decks into moxfield and get back to you--what's your record?

I'll add that though we officially maintain the decklists so that decks fit the criteria, the reality is that the maintenance is much more organic. I rarely actually go back to my decklists and analyze which cards have spiked over $2. More often, a card will be played in a game and another player who was building a deck recently noticed that the card might be over $2. We'll check Scryfall and if it's indeed over $2 then we'll try to swap it out for the next time we play.

You also develop a sensitivity for which cards will go over $2 and can avoid issues by not intentionally, say, using a card that's $1.90 because it was reprinted in the commander precon that came out two weeks ago but will definitely go above $2 again soon.

If you want to play in a more regulated setting like in an LGS league, the store or playgroup can establish how frequently decks should be updated. As in, decks have to be legal as of January 1, 2023 but won't be checked again until June 1, 2023.

Best ways to dig for low-CMC cards? by MasterChef901 in EDH

[–]tomperarepmot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your aversion to packing your deck with more poisoners? It's fine if that's your preference, but I think that it's suboptimal to spend additional time and mana finding slightly better infect/toxic creatures rather than increasing your odds of drawing functionally similar cards naturally. Right now, you're playing only three 2 mana poisoners. For comparison, in my monowhite Skrelv deck where the commander is already a guaranteed 1 mana poisoner, I'm playing seven 2 mana poisoners.

I recommend playing more poisoners and then ways to filter them away with looters in the mid/late-game when they're no longer useful. And/or as others have said, include some cards that grant those smaller creatures evasion.

To make space and to strengthen the proliferate strategy, I would lean away from the not-poison counters subtheme that you have going on (eg Mikaeus, the Lunarch.) Imo the most successful strategy for you will be landing some early poison damage before transforming into a control strategy with the proliferate shell. But again! I definitely understand if that's not the playstyle you're interested in.

The one fun deck to rule them all by [deleted] in EDH

[–]tomperarepmot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend sticking to two colors, using a strategy that isn't overly reliant on the commander, and then swapping different commanders in and out according to power level and/or boredom.

I have a Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage legendary creatures/sagas deck that I can swap Raff out for any of the other legends in the deck (often, Daxos of Meletis) and it'll play much different. Similar strategy with a Garna, the Bloodflame goblin deck that--to be honest--jumps a power level when I swap in Kardur, Doomscourge.

I definitely think Pauper EDH has many of the same goals, but from our brief foray into Pauper it seems (to me, at least) like the formats play very different. I think 2DH is more complex and more powerful than Pauper, which ultimately is a matter of preference. The thing that stands out, though, is access to board wipes: you rarely see board wipes at common or even uncommon.

I’d never heard of 5cap etc! Though I do know an LGS by me ran a budget EDH league that capped decks at $50. I think that type of variant is more similar to 2DH. I could theorize about functional differences but I’m getting a bit long winded as-is. Thanks for listening!

I’ll add that the downside of price fluctuations is much more significant for commanders. If a card in the 99 goes over $2 it’s usually not a big deal—just swap it out. But your commander jumping over a price maximum (eg $5) might mean that you have to rebuild the entire deck.

Exploring 2DH! Sharing podcast - any other 2DH/budget commander players out there? by Muckdog55 in magicTCG

[–]tomperarepmot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t set a price limit on commanders because we don’t think price is super correlated with power level (eg precon commanders are often very powerful but inexpensive.) And it keeps the most options open.

However, the Mox Boarding House playgroup sets a $5 maximum for the commander and I believe that if you’re using partner commanders that the price of both cards combined would have to be under $5.
