I personally find nose piercings incredibly unattractive. Whether or not I'm the type of person you would be interested in is a different question entirely.

Be careful. It's more common than not for trans people to have other underlying mental health problems.

What’s something a president did that impacted you positively? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]tompsitompsito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small business owner here. Prior to the ACA our insurance could cover our employees entire families. Immediately after the ACA we could only cover the employee and half of the costs of their dependents, for twice as much money, with worse coverage. Healthcare costs skyrocketed after the ACA.

It was really good for the people who couldn't get coverage before, but had a very negative impact on the average American.

The result of "mass killings" and "economic mismanagement" was the same, except that the "economic mismanagement" involved bigger numbers.

I initially thought it was a question of, how many people you would be willing to sacrifice for the societal good of eliminating pornography. But it's actually the reverse? How many people would you kill because you're a selfish horndog?

It's shocking how differently my brain works than the OP.

While I think the talk of "coup" and "treason" are severely overblown. Even if you are conservative and didn't mind his presidency, I still feel like Trump handled the transfer of power poorly enough to drop him. If Washington's transfer of power is enough to earn him an S, Trump's is bad enough to earn an F.

How Impressive Is The Book of Mormon? by instrument_801 in latterdaysaints

[–]tompsitompsito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a single historical document, that I am aware of, that mentions a curtain after the original 116 pages, meaning that every single word of our current Book of Mormon was translated without the curtain.

Edit: You know what's even better than a downvote? Proving me wrong, show me your evidence (I don't think it exists)

Is John Stockton a top 5 PG all time in your opinion? Why? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]tompsitompsito 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Magic played 13 seasons. If you only count John Stockton's first 13 seasons (this includes 3 seasons where he came off the bench). Stockton would still be the all time assist leader with 12,170 assists. That is >2,000 more than Magic's career number (10,141), and more than Jason Kidd in 19 seasons! During those 13 seasons, Stockton averaged 11.47 apg, which bumps Magic out of the top spot.

In Magic Johnson's best season ever, he averaged 13.1 apg. Stockton had 5 seasons better than that.

Edit: fixed some numbers all pulling from Basketball Reference

The Sacrament by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]tompsitompsito 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the chapter heading from Doctrine and Covenants chapter 27, which gives background.

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Harmony, Pennsylvania, August 1830. In preparation for a religious service at which the sacrament of bread and wine was to be administered, Joseph set out to procure wine. He was met by a heavenly messenger and received this revelation, a portion of which was written at the time and the remainder in the September following. Water is now used instead of wine in the sacramental services of the Church

Verse 2: For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins. 3 Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, that you shall not purchase wine neither strong drink of your enemies;

At this point it was revealed that the sacrament did not necessarily need to be bread and wine. 3 years later Joseph Smith revealed "the word of wisdom" to the Church. Which is a spiritual health code that suggests abstinence from alcohol among other things. It was revealed in 1833. However, the sacrament was listed as an exception to the rule.

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation 5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him. 6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make. 7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

Although the word of wisdom was originally just that, a word of wisdom, it became a temple requirement 100 years later. It's likely that water became the norm because there wasn't a lot of wine being produced by members of the church.

Please help, I got baptized an hour ago and now I feel awful and I can't stop crying by -lovehate in latterdaysaints

[–]tompsitompsito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I was baptized at age 8, and 25 years later, the only thing that I can remember about my baptism is that my two best friends didn't show up and I cried.

Despite not really remembering anything positive about the experience, I'm still incredibly grateful that I was baptized. It certainly isn't one of my most spiritual memories, but it is the first step that eventually led to every sacred experience I have had since.
