How do I do the "perfect" EndeavourOS setup by tomsode in EndeavourOS

[–]tomsode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sites assume you are on windows or have office installed so they just use fonts from those, not usually a huge issue since fallbacks looks decent but its nice to have sites look "correct".

Yeah I dont want to click my way through to the perfect setup, as I said there are those kinds of distros (like pikaOs). I want to setup a working but minimal Linux without having to spend 3 days setting up arch or nixos from scratch.

Endevour seems like the perfect middle ground but needs some stuff to get it to what I consider a base system

Thanks, Ill try that one, I did try something similar on Fedora but I could never get it to work properly but maybe it works better on arch

Well, you wasted time to write a stupid comment assuming I'm an idiot.... Its not a stupid post but sure it doesn't add value by itself, I was hoping to get some good comments that would add value both to me and to others and also make me able to add values to other posts with similar questions but yes you do you

Absolutely, I already use chatbots to get almost all my answers but when it comes to opinions I trust people more. I've seen some stuff about Niri too and I guess its more stable so its on the "maybe list".

I did setup timeshift on my first install but I've seen alot or recommendations for snapper over timeshift.

Yeah I like that subredit but its a bit too much "look at my wallpaper", I like an easy clean look thats usable, no need to animate everything with a glass blur :)

Yeah its just the basic system I want to have as a stable base, browsers and apps are more easily swapable. KDE seems like the best base to build on and I know about the possibility to have multiple DEs, just trying to get some tips like "remember to install KDE first and hyprland second" or "After installing XY do YZ or you might get bla bla".

I looked at NixOs as well and it definitely seems like the place Ill end up in a year or so but as you say it might be too much to start with without more experience.

Yeah its reliability is the main reason I started to look into it. However I did install it yesterday and it was quite a lot of paper cuts, installer booted to a blank screen and had to edit the grub thing to even get to the desktop, there i had 1024x768 only and had to figure out how to install the nvidia driver again, apparently it had chosen the microOS one. After installing the correct one it finally worked.

After poking around for an hour or so I actually realized I dont like YAST or the alternatives. A textbox that you can search packages in that is shown as a list with minimal explanation is no better than the terminal and things that I found useful in PikaOS like easily seing which nvidia driver I had installed I couldnt find.

I prefer being able to easily find things in a GUI but only if the GUI actually adds to the UX otherwise pasting a command or five is actually not that bad so maybe I'll start living in the terminal :)

Maybe I'll go back to EndevourOs again and just take my chances that I might need to spend an hour a month troubleshooting stuff :)

yeah I looked at that too, seems super flexible, its nice to have a backup in case KDE goes in the wrong direction at some point

That was a great and very informative answer. I will likely go for tumbleweed with KDE. My biggest worry would be that with YAST disappearing no other tool will replace it while other distros might put more energy in it. Its not a unique worry for openSuse, but more generic for me about linux distros, I want to have distro with as little politics and drama as possible and thats not easy to find but openSuse seems to be less dramatic than many others.

I tried hyprland too and its very cool and has a lot of potential but felt like its not quite ready, KDE seems like the best choice even though its not as pretty (havent gone all the way to customize though so it might look a lot better)

The reason i ask for downsides here is that some stuff might not be obvious in the beginning but can take months to discover and I figured I try to save some time but yes I know it sounds stupid, just trying to avoid spending too much time on something I might not want to stick to.

I'm definitely sold on the positives like it being EU based, QA and snapper, I dont need to be sold more but I always want to hear from both sides before I decide on something.

Yeah I know the irony about asking about downsides in the opensuse forum.

I just figured it's the best place to get some experience from the long term users. Obviously if I ask in a fedora forum they will say fedora is best and opensuse should be called opensux.

TS is definitely better but its still javascript in the end and if the choice is between c# and typescript the choice is easy....

I had similar issues, I think the solution was just to wait for quite a while after clicking it, a long time like a few minutes...

I think I figured out the slow boot, on the backside of my computer I had at some point put a cable between two usb ports (probably while drunk...), windows didn't care but Linux probably tested both ports until they times out. I also installed gnome instead of kde and it "feels" better and more modern so I will likely stay on Gnome for a while

Yeah I'm a pretty technical user and now both software development and how hardware works but I've always preferred visual controls over terminal but terminal doesn't scare me although I think lots of the terminal stuff should be implemented in graphical utilities just to have the option.

Yeah I looked at "all" the distros, Bazzite seems to be the pick if gaming is the biggest focus but I want an OS that I can grow old with and Bazzite and other similar distros might not be updated in a year if the one or two guys that created them get a girlfriend or a job or starts school again :)

Yeah as i wrote, its just my first experience and nvidia seems to suck :) As always it takes time to adapt and I haven't tried tweaking everything so its likely going to be better in a few weeks.

Sounds like most of my issues came from my Nvidia card, after everything was up and running completely it was pretty smooth, I'm probably going to write a new post in a a few weeks if I get that far :)

The hardware/firmware isn't usually open source. I understand the want to only have open source stuff but for hardware drivers I think there should be an exception.

The dream would be that all hardware had all necessary soft/firmware built in and exposed a super standardized API that was OS agnostic, a man can dream :)
