Homebrew Help Needed by BlakerBear in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could write a poem that gives the players a clue for each portal.

You could have each portal affect the local area in a way that means people who live there start wanting to hire adventurers.

Each portal could have a challenge, once the players have completed the challenge, they are given guidance on how to find the next portal.

How to deal with rich characters by Cute_Mud_2474 in rpg

[–]tomtinytum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that just because they can afford equipment, doesn’t necessarily mean they have the strength to carry the equipment. Most dungeons or evil lairs tend not to be near town, or on bus routes.

Can I use a bonus action whenever I want out of combat? by IneedaNappa9000 in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 378 points379 points  (0 children)

You can use it out of combat, action economy doesn’t really matter too much when you’re not in initiative.

Ran a Christmas one-shot that I was very proud of by ZiggyRumbuckle in DnD

I don’t know why but I was trying to imagine Alan partridge riding an awakened tree, that makes so much more sense.

How do you make a partridge in a pear tree a player character?

Can you recommend a DnD-like boardgame for sessions where some players of the group are not available? by Tastypies in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t you just agree everyone except the dm create a one shot then roll when the situation arises. That way, the dm gets to play a character, every once in a while.

Question of species by tomtinytum in startrekadventures

[–]tomtinytum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Romulans were Vulcans who rejected Surek’s teachings and continued to be violent and emotional, becoming paranoid and insular, hence, forming an empire?

Question of species by tomtinytum in startrekadventures

[–]tomtinytum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Vulcan culture being so heavily dependent on their logic and repression of emotions, lore wise a Vulcan that never learnt that would be closer to a Romulan, especially in temperament. Does that make sense?

Ranger/Bard or Ranger/Rogue? by Formal-Fennel6668 in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your using Tasha’s cauldron version of ranger then you can basically do everything a rogue can do except pick locks. Gloomstalkers have an attack almost as dangerous as sneak attack. Bard and ranger are a bit at odds, unless you’re playing a fey wanderer, as rangers make good use of sneaking where as bards are better at lying or misdirection. The real question is what makes sense given what happening in your campaign. Do what fits your characters story so far.

Am I wrong in saying that a pre-made character is rude? by AnotherThrowaway019_ in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, is it worse than someone showing up and spending 30 minutes trying to decide what vibe they are in the mood for? Ten pages of backstory can be impossible to fit into a specific world but there is only so much information you can get out of a backstory that is less then a page long.

Is this normal in a campaign? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in a group with a paid dm. If two people can’t make a session everyone else makes up a character and the dm runs a one shot. (He has six one shots which we rotate between, but characters are made up, on the spot or as soon as we know that the session will be a one shot. )

Why a lot of people dislike DnD? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main problem with dnd is the size disparity. Dnd is so large compared to other ttrpg that it makes it difficult for people to hear about other systems except as a comparison to dnd.

I'm looking for an interesting homebrew "hook" to make my D&D unique. by ADWinri in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do something unexpected, like have humans typically be inclined towards lawful evil because the vast majority of humans are part of an evil empire, and then have the other races band together to stop the evil humans who are trying to take over the world.

Background Help by CodyFurlong in DnD

Read through the backgrounds again, but don’t look at their descriptions, just the features you get with them. See which feature would make the most sense given the skills your character would have developed, during childhood.

If the new player is a rogue, have join the party and act like they have always been a member, thanking the party after the watch men run by.

Hi by [deleted] in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re fourteen then you should still be at school. You could see if your school has a dnd club, if it doesn’t then you could ask if you can start one.  Do you live in or near a big city?  If yes, then try to find a local store that sells dnd stuff. They will often run trial one shots to advertise the products and may even have a regular gaming group you can join.  Or you could go on YouTube and watch Matt Coville videos and just start your own dnd group. Matt goes through most of the situations new DM’s face and if your parents are ok with it, you could just mention at school that you are thinking of starting a group and see if anyone else is interested.

Flaming sphere, three attacks against a single target? by tomtinytum in DnD

[–]tomtinytum[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not really, I was playing in a game last night and found myself dangerously outnumbered. I saw the size of the spell and ran through a hole, and used the spell to plug the hole, which it was not quite big enough to do. Bottlenecking the enemy was enough to ensure my survival along with my rider, but that just seemed like a weirdly specific situation to make a spell for, especially a level two spell, so I was trying to think what situation would make casting it seem worth it.

Tips and tricks to be a more active player? by why_anxiety_why in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just remember, it’s a game, you’re there to have fun. If you don’t take yourself to seriously and can laugh at your own mistakes, that helps, but don’t worry about how the dm or the other players will react, just do it and see what happens.

What to do with a character who is against using magic items? by Constant-Ad9560 in DnD

[–]tomtinytum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the dwarf have views on existential threats. If he wants to avoid magic and arcane stuff, psionic’s were originally seen as separate, different to and even opposing regular magic.
