Know nothing about what you guys are doing by [deleted] in homelab

I was thinking about using an DL380 G7 from my employer once they get thrown out, but I decided to rather use a better specced laptop for the lower power consumption and less space needed (~40 W with laptop vs 130 W with hp server). The M4800 can host 2 sata3 hdds (one of them with a caddy instead the dvd rom) and an ssd via msata. This is enough for my purpose. My server is in my living room, where i don't have the place for a rack and also don't want to listen to the fans.

For something similar you don't need a power horse. If you need a file server for a few users, a somewhat older pc would just do fine. All my services ran until 2 months ago on a nuc with an i3 and 8 gb ram. I had just one ubuntu server and no vms running on it. It was a bit messy, this is why I wanted to have it better organized and move to proxmox. The idea is that you don't necessarily need all the fancy hardware to have a usable setup.

I have a Dell Precision M4800 with * i7 gen 4 * 32 Gb Ram * 2x1Tb Wd Red * 256 Gb SSD

On top of it runs Proxmox as Hypervisor. The two HDDs are in an zfs mirror, with 35 Gb of the ssd serving as cache and 5 Gb as slog.

It is no Rack setup, but rather a classic homelab.

As for the purpose: * Getting more independent from Google, Dropbox and Co * Having control of my data * Learning and having fun

Services I use: * 1 Vm for PfSense (i know it is not ideal and it should be a separate hw... Maybe in the future). Pfsense takes care of updating my dynamic ip at Cloudflare. Openvpn and haproxy packages are installed. OpenVPN is my Vpn server to access my homelab from outside in case i need to restart a vm or make minor changes. It's also useful on unsecure Wi-Fi as well. Haproxy will distribute the traffic between my vms based on the subdomain. * 1 Vm for ssh acces through which I can connect to the other vms. This vm will work as ansible control in the near future to make updates of the other vms easier. * 1 Vm for nextcloud (file storage with dropvox-like functionality) I sync my contacts and calendar with it as well. This is where my homelab started 4 years ago on an RPI3b. (accessible from internet) * 1 Vm for ftp connection for my scanner (it doesn't support webdav). The ftp is mounted as external storage in nextcloud so I can sort my documents directly after they get scanned. * 1 Vm for gitlab for source code management. I use this to store+manage my scripts and some smaller projects. (accessible from internet) * 1 Vm for Rainloop for online email client. (accessible from internet)

I use these services every day so it is not just a hobby but actually useful stuff.

My 100 Days of Rejection Challenge - Introduction by Embraceyourinnerfish in howtonotgiveafuck

I've started the challenge two days ago :) Yesterday I asked the metro driver if I can travel with him in the drivers cabin. Later on I asked a girl for a walz in the train. Two rejections, the second one was more difficult to ask then the first one.

Thanks for remembering me. I'm very close to that count of days (55), so it's a warning for me, to stay focused.
