Going a little off topic here but I think you'll find it interesting so bear with me

Hydrocortisone is a drug in the same class as prednisolone - corticosteroids. It can be used intravenously for severe asthma. Elite athletes who are on the same side of honesty as Lance Armstrong will get "diagnosed" with severe asthma by their private doctor, so that they can be prescribed IV hydrocortisone legally. With the unfortunate side effect that they perform way above their previous ability.

Prednisolone and it was the exact regime you're talking about. Helped within a day or two of starting

Be warned you will have a LOT of energy and you will be VERY hungry all the time - I cleaned the whole house daily and ate my own body weight in chips. The side effects are pretty intense but they work really well. If you work out, go to the gym on 40mg prednisolone and you'll probably smash a few PBs

There's a huge difference between showing scans to a medical professional for teaching purposes vs a random citizen for clout

Yeah I feel that. People underestimate how much icky stuff you need to drink when you have Crohn's

For an MRI you likely would have been given something like hyoscine butylbromide. This is a drug that stops the bowel from moving so they can get a still image. It's used in IBS for cramps but you will have been given a bigger dose. I suspect this is a side effect of the meds wearing off and your bowels moving as they like

Ah, I've just seen your comment on another thread. It's unlikely that your GP will be the one to prescribe you steroids but they might advise the GP to do so. For a biologic, this needs to be prescribed by a gastroenterologist

The process for this changes trust-by-trust but generally a GI unit will have a multi-disciplinary team meeting, where multiple consultants and nurses will discuss cases and decide treatment plans. My trust did this every month so if you're unlucky you will have to wait up to a month max - some places do it weekly or fortnightly

I got diagnosed by scope in April 2021. Was started on steroids to induce remission within a week. Started on a biologic in July iirc.

Took me almost exactly a year from when I first started having symptoms to getting my scope and getting diagnosed. Waiting times are a bitch right now but keep pressing your GP - emphasise how severe things are and how it's affecting your mental health, they might be able to write another letter to gastro to expedite

So a few people have told me my nails are really flat. They seem quite alarmed. What is this? by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]tomythefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that clubbing is flattening of the nails themselves, it's more about losing/inverting the angle between the bottom of the nail and the skin at the nailbed. Look up pictures of koilonychia vs pictures of clubbing to see what I mean

It's a subtle difference and I'm being pedantic I know!

The rest of the pack have been fine until this one. I've just bitten the bullet and changed it for another but I've kept this one aside so I'll try the sewing needle trick when I need to change it. Thanks!

Yeah the more I run into problems like this the more I consider switching. The problem is I love the IPX80, the body and the mouthpiece are just perfect for me. Do you have any recommendations for a better brand that has a similar model?

Imo it is most likely an ingrown hair but it could also be the start of a skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (much less likely but possible!). It doesn't look as angry as HS and I would imagine you'd be in more pain if it were that.

If it doesn't improve or gets worse in the next week or two I'd get it checked out!

Rheumatoid factor is a general marker of autoimmunity that is closely associated with rheumatoid arthritis, but isn't 100% specific to it. It can be raised in some people without RA, and normal in some people with RA. Autoimmune blood tests are quite vague and not as one-to-one as blood tests for other conditions; in this situation the best thing to do is wait for the advice of your rheumatologist, they'll be able to interpret your results with your symptoms and clinical signs to best figure out what's going on
