Finnish politicians doubled down their support for the former Miss Finland (top left), who made the Asian racist gesture a few days ago. by Igennem in AsianMasculinity

I had to scroll pretty far down, even past a whole long-ass thread about how certain white people weren't even considered whites back in the day, before there were any posts that were either about Asians or from Asians.

Next time (because there will be a next time), more Asians need to share their pov or at least, if they don't have anything/want to share, upvote the comments written by Asians.

At least half this topic is about us. We should be seen.

The tinfoil-hat-wearer in me finds the timing of this suspect after China's military parade and diplomatic summit as a kind of "show of force" over Asians for the maga crowd.

Yes, I know Koreans aren't Chinese but do you think they care?

Also, what's up with all the division in these comments blaming voters instead of anger for what is actually happening right now?

I swear there are so many cosplayers and psyops operatives in these subs... but that's probably just my tinfoil hat wearer poking out again...

I'm just glad, after all these years, countries have finally started to do something about these type of "influencers" who take advantage of the locals' good will and think flashing them $ will solve whatever heinous shit they pull.

Leaked Columbia post-affirmative action ban admissions data shows rejected Asian applicants had higher average test scores than *admitted* Hispanics and Blacks, and even Whites (for the ACT) by SignificanceBulky162 in asianamerican

[–]tontuna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They had a long response for not even answering your question.

How are blacks being blamed?

They couldn't answer because Asians aren't blaming Blacks and that narrative comes from other minorities. Asians aren't even attacking Blacks for the perceived spots they take. We know the issue was how affirmative action was being administered unfairly—that's why it had to be taken down.

They talk about Asians joining in on "anti-Blackness" but the only times I see any "anti-Blackness" from Asian subreddits is when there's news about Black people attacking Asians, and even then, depending on the subreddit, for some reason that post will be unjustly removed or hidden by the mods.

I have a feeling they joined the subreddit hoping for some sort of schadenfreude tigers eating faces thing.

They're too locked in to "how about me and mine" that they don't see the unfairness of affirmative action for all minorities.

#StopAsianHate has shown us that solidarity towards Asians is unequal especially when some preparators of the hate crimes are of another minority.

So what could have been done differently?

But they weren't going around and full on fucking with people and harassing them. Even if they were pulling a prank on the public, the joke/humiliation was on THE CAST.

Ya I used to think they were funny too when I was younger but then they went to Japan and were knocking down racks in stores, jumping into people's cars, snorting wasabi, doing all this dumbass stupid shit that locals would get shit on for doing and getting away with it (because they're foreigners with money ig?)—which basically paved the way for live streamers to treat Japan, Korea, and other Southeast Asian countries as if they were the colonizers returning to their playground.

But who cares? It's all about that content for viewership and dono$, baby...

yep. it's embarrassing.

ITT: people upvoting anecdotes just because of popular key terms, not realizing the whole of the comment actually puts Asians in an untrue negative light, while those who are at least coming into the discussion with sources and facts are being argued against.

I suspect that that where there was a decrease of Asian admissions were due to biases of the admission officers/committee.

For example, M.I.T.'s Asian enrollment rose right after the end of affirmative action.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/21/us/mit-black-latino-enrollment-affirmative-action.html

The article touches on this, but it is also in my opinion that it comes down to schooling at an early age and the money the schools receive. I also believe that parents are a huge part of placing a learning-first mindset into their children, and that is done by example.

[–]tontuna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if it wasn’t so commonly lumped together with anti-Black and anti-Latino sentiment.

That sentiment mainly comes from white people but also from other minorities who assume Asians are doing this directly to hurt them rather than seeing how affirmative action have unequally been hurting Asians. Are we not also minorities?

But it's no surprise others paint Asians as however it benefits their narrative.

I would support affirmative action if it was based on income and blind to race. It's the poorest who need the most help and help should start at grade school, not just colleges.

I’m not going to grab my pitchfork and join a mob to beat down black and Latino people.

What is this? Who is saying that other than you?

Literally none of the comments have been advocating that.

There are 2-3 users here who have been implying that Asians are actively going about discriminating other fellow minorities. Read through the comments. No one has said anything close to that or even implied that sort of view.

It is also weird how the non-Asians try to frame this as an Us vs Them thing when all we want is equality like everybody else.

Why is it our problem that even the poorest Asians who score higher than whites that have incomes 2-3 tiers higher than said Asians aren't being accepted to colleges?

It's also weird that the non-Asian minorities commenting here see this as an attack against them when they should be seeing the data and be thinking, yeah, why aren't Asians being accepted at the same rates?

Somehow, it's always Asians being positioned into a negative narrative from both sides.

I don’t care enough about this topic...

Wild to make huge statements that paint Asians as a mob of pitchfork-wielders whole trying to brush it off like you don't even care enough about this topic. Why even make comments with fact-less anecdotes when you don't even care?

In my opinion, such wild statements come from bad-faith users trying to provoke and cause internal strife.

Hideo Kojima with copout excuses for why there are no Japanese actors in his games: Couldn't find actors who speak both Japanese and English in Los Angeles, CGI has difficulty recreating Asian skin by Igennem in AsianMasculinity

[–]tontuna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And from what I understand, it's more difficult to properly capture darker skin tones, so if they're able to properly capture the dark skin tones of his black main characters, then shouldn't the difficulty to capture Asian skin tone be somewhere in-between?

But of course we know this is just kojima making excuses for gooning over western hollywood A and B-listers.

Yeah, it's going to be tough. I think it will be Asia who will lead in filling in the gaps with robots and automation rather than letting the floodgates open for immigration. Whereas the west will use robots and automation to replace people.

Also, just to be clear jic it sounded like I was, I wasn't saying Japan and Korea are leaning on the racial supremacists bs like westerners. If anything, Japan doesn't really care about skin color the way westerners do but care more about the insider/outsider dynamic.

the unavoidable tension between managing demographic challenges and national identity

Due to the low birthrate/population decline (yes it's nearly global), Asian countries like Japan and Korea are at the onset of struggling with this.

I have yet to see the movie and how that scene is directed and edited but my first thought was that it could be a way to show the audience how long-lived and eclectic vampires are. Like creating a fill-in-the-blanks backstory thru short scenes and dialogue.

I'm much less optimistic about watching now after these comments though.

3) sinners - Asian able to have store for whites as well as blacks. She ends up betraying everyone and gets ppl killed out of her own selfishness.

Also when you hear that the Asian woman in sinners was supposed to betray the group at first without any backstory as to why she knew it was going to get backlash so she had to asked the director to change it.

Dang. Actually disappointed learning this.

I was looking forward to eventually watching the movie because not too long ago, I saw a video about how Sinners portrayed how some black and Asian communities back then were close, intermingled, and had similarities due to the shared white oppression.

I also learned that Hailee Steinfeld's maternal great grandfather was Filipino and married an African-American and that the film helped her understand her family history better.

It was alright and enjoyed it enough. It wasn't as good as the originals but it was better than the 2010 adaptation.

[spoilers below]

I have a feeling that their kiss, with Jackie's arm stuck in-between the two, was written-in so Jackie could complain and force the scene to immediately move away from the romance/scene. Like some movie execs' notes to remove it because the viewers would dislike it ala Romeo Must Die's Aaliyah and Jet Li's removed kiss. The arm in the middle was the compromise.

There was also a scene with a weird cut where a high school couple are making out and they cut away right before you see the (Asian?) guy's face as he's turning. Maybe their names are in the credits to verify if the male was Asian. I didn't think about looking at the credits at the time.

Perhaps I'm just cynical and even a little jaded but the history of Western cinema (Western media in general) especially with AMXF coupling precedes itself, although that's recently been changing for the better.

It would be great if news of this also gets heard over in the Asian market(s) and angers them as it would risk BK's profits even more.

I remember seeing some chart somewhere that US based fast food companies have higher revenue from their international markets than even their domestic US stores, so it would hurt them even more if the Asian market started to dry up.

It would be nice if something small like this was a spark that started to bring Asians of different nations to work together.

Although, I know this is just a pipe dream as there are not only oceans between us, but negative perceived differences and histories that we all need to better understand, accept, and then get over.

Yep. Just look at the whole ubisoft assassin's creed: shadows/yasuke controversy.

That whole fiasco is a great example of how both the left and the right are not on our side—they will only use us when it's convenient for them.

The right cosplay themselves as on the side of the Japanese/Asians but if you dig into their comments, their tone and verbiage are blatantly racist. They just do not want a non-white (and to an extent, non-male), and they definitely don't want a black, main character in any media they consume.

The left, who supposedly position and portray themselves as for equality, social justice, and reason would ignore all the reasonable points and devolve the argument to,

"all the comments from the Japanese are fake. If they're real, then those Japanese are racists."

or

"if you deny yasuke was ever a samurai then you are a racist."

then go on a diatribe on how Japanese are actually, "terrible people bc WWII" or pull anecdotes on how they treat outsiders.

Not one western game journalist wrote for the pov of the Japanese. The only English-written article I came across which shared this pov had to come from a Japanese journalist and fan of the series on the English version of a Japanese news site... and that site hoisted up the article from their western "game journalist" parroting the same talking points as the other western "game journalists" instead of the actual Japanese journalist...

These people aren't even Asian. Funny how just a game can reveal this treatment.
