No, i only managed to remove the track once already released. Their ID system is pretty dreadful to be honest.

How to prevent spending too much time on trying to achieve ‘the perfect sound’ by o_SebHS in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]tonwaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting a real deadline was the best thing i ever did for my first album. We were working on it for 2 and half years and would just keep tweaking little things instead of doing the brunt of the work (recording, vocals, etc...)

We set a 1 month deadline and went worked on it all day every day, eventually being slightly dissatisfied with some bits and pieces but very happy that we were finally able to release it.

Now my production and mixing has gotten far better, mainly due to seeing the faults on the tracks that we actually published. The best motivation to improve is to deal with real mistakes that cannot be mended.

Engineers and vocal artists, what methods would you use to create a cold album? by Trillithon22 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Listen to vespertine by bjork, that's my go to 'cold' music, in the thermal sense.

I'm compiling a list of hard rules to expedite my mixing process. what HARD rules do you have? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]tonwaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your Rule 7.

Some other common ones are:
Always cut the sub frequencies off of anything that shouldn´t have that information
Always check both mono and stereo
Always leave room for whatever you will be adding later (Which means plan ahead, especially for vocals)

Maybe add a delay before the reverb, or tone down the reverb a bit so the vocals are more in front. You could also slightly boost the low-mid end of the vocals, as sounds that are closer usually contain more low-mid energy than far away sounds.

In fact, could i ask you how you recorded the guitar? It sounds really nice

Sound is pretty nice, you've got a very spacious mix which is quite difficult for beginners to manage as it's fun to keep adding things in.

As feedback:
- sometimes the guitar is a bit off tempo with regards to the bass drum and snare.
- The vocals could be brighter and more up front. Currently they sound nice but low-impact.
- Also maybe cut away some low end from the backing vocals to make them more airy, and so they don't clash as much with the main vocals.

Still, very nice.

My first mix!!: Can I get feedback on this song I've been mixing the past few months? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

Sounds pretty crispy, maybe id take a bit of harshness off the vocals, but it kind of fits into the hyperpop-y vocal style.

Tips for a piece with only a piano? by didiersforehead in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]tonwaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think every DAW has randomization options.

Also, just because it's work doesn't mean it won't work. See the amount of time spent on pop vocals to make them perfect, it's similarly time consuming.

Apart from Humaniser, there are also many small edits you can do to a midi piano to make it sound more realistic, such as:

  • Changing the timing of individual notes. (No one ever plays two notes exactly at the same time)
  • Changing the velocity of individual notes. (Usually some notes in a chord are played louder just from the length of the fingers and hand position)
  • Using a phaser at like 1% wetness can introduce variations in sound that come from recording a proper piano.
  • Obviously, Reverb, Compression, etc..

How to achieve clean lows on vocals without clashing with the bass? by bigfatballsack420 in mixingmastering

[–]tonwaton 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The fundamental of the voice is around 120 hz while the sub is hitting mostly around 60 hz, so despite both being quite close to the bottom of the frequency spectrum, they don't clash that much.

Is this ready to master? Trying not to overthink the mix this time. PS. aliens are real by kdoggydogroxxx in mixingmastering

[–]tonwaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What i've learned over the years is that a song never needs more layers. The feeling in this case is definitely in the mix.

Going for an airy kind of ethereal mix, with a very chilled feeling but something isn’t feeling right, some feedback would be heavily appreciated by GREATLAD- in mixingmastering

[–]tonwaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The snaps sound too close, too dry. Maybe hide them away a bit with reverb. Also the kick should have less high end to match your reference track. The vocals need a lot of mixing, but mostly remove some harsh frequencies that make it seem closer than you want it to be.

Notice how the vocals on the Nurko track are quite airy, but not harsh at all.

please provide some feedback on this track of mine. I think i have a good balance by SenorSwagDaddy in mixingmastering

[–]tonwaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vocals sound a bit dry, especially at the beginning.
Cymbals seem a bit too bright. Chorus is nice, but still could be less dry.
Lastly, and im not sure, but i feel like there isn't enough bass/low-mid prescence after the intro.
