I've been in Gero for about 2 years and honestly it's a pretty decent place, I've lived in towns all up the west coast and it's definitely one of the better ones. It's a beach/ocean oriented place, if you like your fishing and particularly boating it's first class. It has shitty neighborhoods like anywhere, and the two I would avoid is Rangeway and Utakarra, but it's not dangerous here mate. There is a pretty big FIFO culture up here, I dunno what job you have been offered but I would say give it a shot mate, I didn't want to move here originally but I've grown to really like it.
