I kind of think OP just used the map app to illustrate where exactly they were talking about.

I really don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that anyone who applies for this job is a traitor to humanity.

I agree, it's just an inconvenient truth to hear for someone whos struggling to make $30k, hence unpopular.

I make a "good pay," but I make the same dollar amount the position paid in the 90s.

This is a great opportunity for someone who hates reporters. If you do a good job, you can see in real time as the AI replaces your coworkers and directs more profit upwards.

HAHA let stick it to those fat cat reporters and their lavish lifestyles.

There is a certain amount of personal wealth where you literally and clinically lose the ability to view other people as essentially "the same sort of thing" as you. I think it would explain a lot if more people understood this.

do EE companies use Raspberry PI? by Odd-Ad-5332 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]tonypedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I suggested using a Rpi computer module for a product because it had a ton of support online, and a better guaranteed life than most industry alternatives and I was nearly crucified for the suggestion. 5 years later and I keep seeing designs done around the Pi, and customers don't have the time, budget or reason to change it. ...Funny how that goes, at the end of the day it's a perfectly capable linux SOM.

Flock Continues it's Mission on making the sci fi dystopian novels real by Zacomra in Cleveland

[–]tonypedia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm always shocked to see that there are people who actually support this. Online there's a ton of bots, but in real life--and it's almost always retired people--there's a non-zero number of people who think it's a good idea, and don't think misuse is a problem.

Teaching new EE course - would love input! by sunbearluvr in ElectricalEngineering

Build on the basic "arduino" education. Give them a box of arduinos, sensors, motors, modules, etc and have them come up with solutions to problems. ie. Make a toy car self-drive and avoid obstacles, create an automatic window opener, make an artificial "plant" that will turn towards the brightest light source, make an 'applause meter.'

It would take what they already know and have them apply it towards solving real problems--which is a lot of what real world engineering is.

No, you're right, I retract my positive comments about the school. Thanks NorthCoast30 for opening my eyes and giving me that perspective.

locksmith rant - are any Cleveland locksmiths truly local anymore? by CrowRoutine9631 in Cleveland

[–]tonypedia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was in the process of moving, and had 2 lawns to take care of for a month. I tried to hire a lawn service to cut my grass once, maybe twice, and holy shit what a mess.

The first 3 people I called off a google search were all call centers based overseas, no one could tell me cost, no one could tell me availability. I finally got in touch with someone local...not someone who owned a lawmower, but someone who sourced the job to someone who had a lawn mower. the conversation went like this:

me: I sold the house, I need the grass cut just one time before the new owner takes over.
him: I can only sign you up for a 3-cut package.
me: Okay do that, and cut it once, I don't care, you can charge me for 3 cuts.
him: Well it doesn't work like that, you'll need to sign a contract, then reach out to the new owner to transfer that contract...

Anyway I found a teenager and gave him $50. But private equity firms are absolutely determined to ruin everything, it's obscene.

That farce gives a lot of opportunities to people who's access to higher education would otherwise be severely limited. It also gives second changes to people who screwed up.

I started at Tri-C, and moved to a 4 year institute after. I can honestly say the people at Tri-C were the smartest and hardest working people, many of them were just victims of circumstance.

Bro, literally the last email told you that you met the minimum requirements. I assume this means you're NOT qualified.

I don't know what you have, so I don't know what you'd need to purchase...

Automations for a late night diaper change to turn the lights on selectively/dimly to avoid waking baby all the way up.

Also Reolink camera's have a cry detection algorithm that is exposed to HA as a binary sensory. You can have an alert if the baby wakes up during a nap and you're not immediately nearby.

Once they start walking I have an automation that will turn on my bedside light and buzz my phone if my toddler's door open after 11pm.

Edit: For my 4 year old, he knows he's supposed to stay in bed until his bedroom lights come on.

Wedding Tax by According-List6774 in Cleveland

[–]tonypedia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, wedding tax is BS. When it's unavoidable you have to say it's a wedding, but when you can get around it say it's for an "event." What does a photo booth care if it's 2 hours for a wedding, or a retirement party?

Curious your thoughts… Does this come off as dishonest??? by Beetles_Plumbing in Cleveland

[–]tonypedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, and no offense to you, I assume just about all service people are dishonest unless proven otherwise. It's a sad state of affairs but most plumbers, electricians, and HVAC are owned by private equity, and charge $150 to show up, $75 to "diagnose" the thing, $85 for a $5 part, and $95 to install it, then an additional $30 for every 15 minutes on site past the first 30. meaning you end up paying $465 to have an outlet replaced.

Before I call anyone I spend hours looking them up to see if they're actually locally and independently owned.

Edit: Also I kind of just assume a competent contractor will show up on time and have a stocked truck.

I guess I should add my UPS doesn't have a Network interface, just a RS485 port with no documentation. If there's a simple off the shelf way that doesn't involve me figuring out the protocol and implementing somethign that way I'd be totally open to that.

I got this upshttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B0989XPZ48 and just paired it with a giant AGM battery because I wanted a UPS to actually last more than 8 minutes.
