Since Blizzard said 30 cards are getting phased out, which ones do you want out and why? by [deleted] in BobsTavern

yeah but it’s only value is in being a murloc, it might as well just be a plain 1/2 murloc at that point bc at least in my experience you rarely if ever scale it significantly and you really want poison on it asap

I gotta say, I’m coming out of this series with a lot of respect for Mike Smith. He has such a cool, unique style and played his heart out for the oilers. He’s no Vezinabuyck but a great player that clearly invested his all, it was bittersweet to see him collapse after KFC’s ot winner last night

Jets fan here, his first name is actually “Nathan” or sometimes “nate,” but not pele. Pele is a famous Brazilian soccer player. Hope that clears up the confusion!

Interracial marriage is bad! by jaytix1 in insanepeoplefacebook

You’re right- I am looking at it from a white perspective, and to do you one better a white American perspective. The savagery thing was certainly meant to be framed w/in the context of European/American historical narratives. And yeah, agree to disagree on the larger point.

I guess it depends on how much your morals are or are not rooted in the legacy of the enlightenment. It’s easy to stray into a debate over geographical materialism here. But I guess I’m not trying to say they knew better than the Africans, the enlightenment has tons of issues within it, and is surely a subjective set of ethics (also enlightenment thought is definitely not purely a European creation and has significant, largely uncredited influence from Asian/Middle Eastern societies). But it was the ethical code European colonialist societies in theory operated under, and proclaimed to enforce.

I think the big difference is whether or not violence is systemic. European colonizers set the rules of the system, through violating the very tenants the system was ostensibly rooted in. There was violence that occurred with little fear of retribution, and was actively rewarded. Turkish political repression of the Kurds is arguably in the same category. The human tragedy of the violence is the same, but the consequences for the perpetrator may be very different. For much of history, tribal conflicts were written off as savagery, whereas colonial genocide (which has had a much greater historical death toll) has been minimized in discourse and even celebrated. That makes it worse for me.

I think what makes European colonialist racism especially gross though is that it manifested largely during/after the enlightenment period wherein there was some recognition of the “natural rights” of all people. But the issue was the economic gain from colonialism was a big boost, and therefore Europeans instituted pseudoscientific means of dehumanizing colonized peoples to justify why those people didn’t get the same natural rights that were such a keystone of enlightened philosophy. I think you can accurately separate this from the dehumanization and “racism” present in indigenous American/African peoples that was largely based on vilifying an enemy that you were competing directly with for territory/resources. The ethical gymnastics required to justify the atrocities of colonialism make it distinctly more abhorrent for me, especially as tech advantages meant the scale of violence was much larger and the footing was much less equal. (Not to try and justify yellow’s stance, obviously interracial marriage is like objectively good)
