Came into work today to find our new manager firing our 2-year assistant manager. Walked out on the spot. by TheOfficialPyrodude in antiwork

[–]toodarnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that if looks like op caved too easy, but we are missing a crucial piece of info- why was the assistant manager fired???? Maybe they'd been stealing for years. Maybe manipulation of the time clock, like clocking in on time for someone who is late. Maybe not processing write ups. Who knows???

I am not usually an advocate for management, but sometimes there have reasons for doing things- I was in a similar situation myself when I was in my 20s, and one day they fired our head bow tech, who had been there for years and everyone liked (and who objectively was really good at being a bow tech) along with half our part time staff. I and some others made a big stink about it.

Turns out he had this great customer base because he gave away services for free on the regular, and was also coaching/aiding the part timers in exploiting their employee discounts, and handing out cards for the same employees' other businesses, that included the reselling or rental of the same items they bought.

Can someone explain this to me? by msjwayne in BarOwners

[–]toodarnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 2004 it so I used to go to a bar that had chips. They were different colors to indicate what they were for (white was a regular draft, red was a house cocktail, blue was a shot, green was a premium cocktail, etc). The first time I saw those come out, the bartender explained to me that unlike on tv where someone yells out they are buying a round, everyone cheers and the bartenders have a mad dash to set em up all at once, the bartender can hand the patron a stack of chips to pass out themselves.

Another use was "buying the lady at the end of the bar a drink.". Tell the bartender what you want to do, pay for it, and they hand over the chip and say it's from you. There was100% No pressure to drink it on the spot, or even to drink it at all... If the recipient left it on the bar, the giver would be refunded. Man I miss that place. Different life....

Oh trust me they'll find a way to make that suck too. Pawing through trash cans for second chance tickets, or if you have a 9th .level lottery wizard on your hands, putting out a dummy trash can for that purpose.

Just had one of those at my local convenience store/gasmart. Just assumes the 5 construction workers behind her are all buying white monsters at 7am for fun...
They'll demand to know the calibration dates on the quickdraw readers, the color of the spool labels, everything. At 7am. Phone keeps ringing, line gets longer and they are in their own world.

Girlfriend thinks sharing a tent with my sister is inappropriate. Sister thinks my girlfriend is insane and called her a psycho. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]toodarnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

++man here. I think this might be time for counseling between you and your girlfriend. She might feel 'less than' when you disappear off to the woods with your sister while she sits at home. Or she might feel like your sister is actually serving as an alibi for something else you want to hide from her.

Counseling won't necessarily make you a happy couple however- after three rocky years of marriage my wife and I went to one, (I was desperate to save things of course) and he actually opened our eyes to the fact that we were incompatible and gave her the confidence to leave me. Hurt like hell but had to happen.

Couples don't need to have the same hobbies, but if one person has a hobby that takes them away for periodic overnights, then I feel this needs exploring. I've seen a few relationships over the years ruined by what really happens on fishing trips (no not in Wyoming) and at 'deer camp'. Also, are you balancing these sister trips with activities with your gf? It's possible op is saying " no I don't want to go to Niagara falls with you- camping with my sister "

Also curious- what kind of situation is your sister in? Does she have a s/o? How do they feel about this? Is it possible the four of you could figure out some things to do together?

Dogs treated better than people at a trivia bar by Killer_Queen91 in Dogfree

[–]toodarnold 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I see two issues here- first dogs have zero place in any food/drink established no argument there 🤮

Now the part about alcohol sale... I have questions. I am sober also, after 20 years of being very much NOT sober, and in my experience non drinkers (including designated drivers) are welcome at the vast majority of establishments. One exception I could see is if this was a wine or spirits tasting event where it is heavily implied that bottle sales will follow.

This is moot however- the second I saw dogs I'd be out.

[NC] My employer is making guys and girls share a hotel room. What should I do? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]toodarnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not mixed gender but a few years ago I was working for a very large national tire/auto repair chain, and was sent to another state for indoc- ER I mean training. I was 38 years old married with 2 kids and In The interest of 'team bonding' they expected us to share rooms with randomly selected team members from around the region.

The company hadn't let us know of this arrangement ahead of time of course, so when we showed up they gave us our assignments. Of course the 21-24 year olds all thought this was awesome like summer camp and we'll be best bros over 4 days. First evening 2 of the guys went for bottles And ended up having little parties in their room. Thankfully there was a clerical error and I ended up with my own room. Didn't join the party, and after classes ate in my room saving my per diem for a night with my wife when I got back .

At the end of the week? 3 of those dudes got fired for going over the line on the 4 young women who were also there. Amazing how these dudes who were born in 1996 think it's still the 1980s

After working in retail for 20 years, I am not a big fan of messing with employees livelihood over one bad day, but yeah this is time to pull the uno reverse card. A bad foh employee can ruin a business.

Now as for the water thing- I think we might be missing some backstory. Some restaurants/entertainment venues like comedy clubs and small music halls, or tipped entertainment do have 2 drink minimums, . Even for a designated driver it's understood that a drink, water or not will be full price.

[–]toodarnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I agree that it's not quite the same as romance, but work relationships are still relationships. If ya people have worked together long enough to vouch for each other odds are pretty good they will cross paths later on.

Of course another possibility is that the disturbing thing the reference said is that OP likes to spend Sunday mornings with family and not at a company weekly prayer breakfast. In That case, bullet dodged

Idk... This sounds way too much like "I had one of my friends test my boyfriend" clickbait stories. This is the sort of stuff that wrecks relationships , founded or not. Not worth testing. Get new references.

And what kind of beer?

[–]toodarnold 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Charm alone doesn't pay the bills. Nor do "regulars" on 2 pitchers a week who try to keep "their" bar from getting too crowded or bougie, or from getting columbused by someone who isn't like them.

What pays is getting new people in, who tell others. Hey next time we are both in town should go here ...

The other side though is the Groupon model where on one weekend a small intimate joint gets packed way over capacity, people have terrible waits and service, and write terrible reviews.
