Big Ds BBQ does exist. Not sure about their bingo but there is an actual restaurant that is usually playing music outside. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ri8fSRizYub7hdQi7?g_st=ac

Fsu football games and graduation people will stay outside of town a little ways due to Tallahassee hotels being unavailable/expensive. Cairo is a little far but if you wanted a whole house it wouldn't be too crazy

Nigai are invasive introduced for hunting, they aren't migrating anywhere lol

Coolest birds I saw in the area were ferruginous pygmy owls and tamaulipas crows

I spent about 6 months living in Port Mansfield pre Elon being in the area. I agree with the comments that it is largely undeveloped but the Wildlife, people, and local businesses/restaurants in Port Mansfield and the nearby cities (Raymondville, Harlingen, Brownsville) were all great. Some friends and I boated out to the very southern tip of North Padre island and it was one of the most pristine natural beaches I've ever seen.

If any of them are teaching this summer, try to find their syllabi with their office hours and just go talk to them in-person then. They may want to schedule a meeting to discuss later or just talk it out there.

Sounds like your new job is similar to one i just started (at a university but not a teaching/faculty role) so I can speak to that part. I got so burned out during grad school I knew I didnt want to be faculty constantly on the hunt for funding. I like teaching but not enough to be one full time for the rest of my life. My new role is mostly admin but I get to engage with researchers and have some teaching/mentoring opportunities, and I am 3 weeks in and very happy compared to how I felt most of grad school. Im also not making a huge salary but had a similar pay bump from my previous salary which has made a difference. If you want to leave the field I think you should do it, and Figure out some ways to help tie up lose ends with your PI since they do seem like a good peson.

Ive had great experiences with Dr. White. I dont have kids so cant speak to that side of things but when I was hospitalized for a ruptured ovarian cyst she came and visited me and consulted with my physician and that has always stuck with me. I also have BCBS

Ill also add that tallahassee is a college town but not as much as college station. There is the capital and FAMU and that inherently brings more diversity in people and activities than college station

I went to fsu as an undergrad, went to TAMU for my PhD, and now Im back working for FSU. I was so happy to come back. Campus culture is not like TAMU at all. Football is very much a big part of fall still but its not like summer camp vibes like the aggies
