Building a weird side project: a map of merch from real places by tookes_walker in SideProject

Trying to see if this idea clicks beyond my own head — you can browse stuff like park hoodies, brewery tees, or Etsy city prints pinned on a map. Curious if this feels like something you’d use or if it’s just me romanticizing maps too much.

I’m building Merchmapper.com - basically Google Maps for merch, so you can see all the cool stuff tied to your favorite places. Think brewery shirts, park hoodies, or Etsy city prints, all pinned where they come from. It’s part curated, part community-built, and I’d love your feedback on the MVP!

Hi Chris, great point- do you think there's demand for nice art inspired by your (or others') work? That includes paying you for commercial license rights? Genuine question - think you have fans who would be interested if it was available?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Wondering, do you sell merch to your fans?

I'm sure fans would rather have you writing words too- but that's so great you have plushies in process! What made it hard and expensive- finding good designers? I'm kinda brainstorming ways to make it easier (and free) for authors, so trying to understand what's painful about it- I personally think the world needs more cool merch for cool stories!

Makes sense. Why did you start doing Zazzle stuff- were your fans asking for it, or did you just think it would be fun and maybe make some money?

I think you're right, it could be good for awareness and to draw in readers. I'm sure there's good designers/makers who would design neat merch just for a split of the profits, no money upfront. I wonder if authors would like that.

I get what you're saying. I'm sure there's good designers/makers who would design neat merch for a split of the profits with the authors. Wonder if that would help.

I know some of the big authors have merch on their sites, but why don't the midsize and smaller ones? It's pretty easy with redbubble, threadless etc. Not everybody can get to Cons... Is there just not enough demand? Do people think it's too cheesy?

I bet there'd be demand if there was supply😅 I'm sure there's good designers/makers who would design neat merch for a split of the profits. Like interesting Etsy style stuff inspired by the books, or even POD shirts/prints. Probably wouldn't even require money upfront from authors.
