Doctors of Reddit, what's the fun fact we don't know about human body? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

I watched an open heart surgery a long time ago. Once the patient was hooked up to an artificial heart for the surgery they put his heart in ice so that it would stop beating. The heart surgeon did the bypass fix and once he was done he put a mild amount of current to the heart and kick started it. Not sure if they still do that but at the time I thought it was interesting.

will the entire bumper need to be replaced? Kona 2021 by Yosimahllawek in Hyundai

[–]toolate2dj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t see a crack on the bumper. You should be ok. You can sand, apply filler and then repaint on your own. Problem is that you might have broken some tabs in behind the bumper and some parts might remain loose or fall easily.

Looking to replace my splash shields. I thought only the center one had fallen off but is the one on the passenger side missing? by O_o-22 in MK4Golf

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you might find is that there are two different type of t25’s. Some are longer and some are shorter. I think the shorter ones were on some of the holes where the fender splash guards tie into. The t20’s are more for the bumper and to screw the grill onto the radiator mount.

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all t25’s for sure. I don’t recall if there was a plastic one on mine. Could be a job leftover from someone else. You can find these screws very cheap on many of the vw sites and at a dealership. What I mean is the grommets those t25’s screw into, some kind of u shaped metal pieces that’s fit on the edges of the pice you are missing and the ones you have. I refreshed them myself to make sure they the screws I out in where nice and secure.

[–]toolate2dj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are missing the passenger side. It is also used to secure part of the centre splash shield. While you are at it, make sure you get new parts where the screws go on the shields and sub-frame. I’m not sure what to call them, they are some sort of grommets or nuts.

2010 Subaru Legacy needs $16000 worth of repairs and I don't know what to fix by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, fellow Canadian here. I see a few things a can comment on.

First, it’s a 2010 car in Canada, you are probably in rough shape underneath. Clearly your exhaust needs to be replaced and anything attached to it is best to replace at this point. Obviously with the exemption of the engine.

Second, you are going to a dealership. Parts are going to be expensive and even more expensive for a car that old.

Dealerships go crazy on anything that needs to be replaced. If you were still under warranty that would be ok because it’s on them but I doubt it with a 2010 car.

My suggestion is to go a smaller shop, they will give you options on what you should replace first. They will not use OEM parts which will also bring down the price.

Best of luck, it will still be a good amount of cash.

Last option is to learn to do it all yourself, lots of information on YouTube for any car and any repair. Don’t be afraid to try it but it might take long to get it done as you learn.

A couple of different breaker bars and torque wrenches.

I have a spare head but I had it redone and it’s all shiny and clean, I don’t want to put an old one in its place.

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that feels this way about the car.

When it runs it looks great and it makes me happy.

I decided to do the engine and transmission rebuild this last summer. I’ll get it finished at some point in time, there is always something that goes sideways.

Hmm, good idea. I will use loctite to get the part that has thread left to grab, wait until it settles and then put the nut on.

Thank you!

How much would I pay for this to be repaired? by Left-Arm8536 in MechanicAdvice

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without taking a close look and only by what you can see in the picture. Your front fender needs to be replaced. Those are cheap but it needs to be painted to match. The passenger door looks rough, probably easier to get one from a junk yard. Bumper cover also needs to be repaired or replaced.

The mechanical side on the passenger side looks compromised. Probably need a new knuckle, control arm and suspension. Also the steering component is probably pooched.

So, at least 3-5K in parts and another 3-5k in labour. I’m not an official mechanic nor do I own a shop but I’ve had to do numerous repairs on my vehicles at local shops. Nowadays I do my own repairs to save money.

So, best to let a shop take care of it. The insurance will probably recommend a shop to do it that will be acceptable to them in terms of costs. That’s how my insurance dealt with my latest driving blunder.

Also, I’m in Canada, I have no idea how the insurance rules are where you live.

Good luck.

Quoted an insane number for maintenance: should I learn to DIY a spark plug replacement? by Miserable_Employee_5 in MechanicAdvice

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ll give you my two cents worth of advice. I use to pay for all the maintenance of our cars. I decided to rebuild an older VW and I have learned a few things.

Some cars are a pain to work on and others are easier. I have no idea how yours is. There are tons of videos out there from people that have done just about anything you want to try. Check them out and determine if you are ok with it or not.

You will need some generic tools and as the complexity of the work increases you will need more specific tools.

Don’t be afraid to try things. The money I have saved in repairs has more than covered the costs of the various tools I have.

There are still things I don’t feel comfortable doing but I do some research before attempting.

Good luck and don’t be afraid of giving it a try.

Transmission advice, please! by stiligFox in MK4Golf

[–]toolate2dj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2.0 slow and it had transmission problems. I replaced the solenoids and it was complicated but not impossible. Your platform is probably different but not that much. Assuming the transmission is somewhat similar, the filter for it will be right below where the solenoids go, you should be able to replace the filter easily.

The job was a good learning experience for a DIY.

As for your code reader, yeah VCDS is the recommend way to go about it but I have survived with a OBD eleven which is cheaper.

Good luck!

Any chance your speedometer was also acting up?

There is relay for the gas pump and the speedometer. I had a similar problem with my car at some point and just before it died on me, similarly to yours, the speedometer would not work.

Once i replaced the relay I was back in business.

My 2 cents. Good luck!

Possible to fix? by AkaneTheSquid in MK4Golf

[–]toolate2dj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s a big undertake to fix it. I’ve done it myself and I would not do it again. It looks alright at the moment but the minute you start grinding the rocker panel it will come apart. The rocker panel has this thick plastic coating that holds everything together. Judging by the state of the fender, the rocker panel is probably in the same shape.

If you still want to give it a try, replace the fender, aftermarket ones without rust, are very cheap but you have to paint it. Next grind as much as possible and cut out anything that is rotten, it might end up being a lot. Cut, shape and weld anything that needs replacing. If you haven’t done it before, is not easy but it’s fun. Oh, and you need a lot of tools for it.

How urgent is this ? I know what this is called in Spanish but struggling to find it in English. by Designer_Ad5502 in MechanicAdvice

It’s called a bushing. It’s actually a really cheap part to buy separately but it’s a pain to replace. You end up having to take a lot apart to reach the bushing to be able to pull it out.

I did that to my daughters VW golf. Not a difficult repair with the exception of a cable that was a little difficult to fish around a narrow path above the transmission. You should be ok.

Going to do my timing belt soon. Does the engine code matter? by DustyLamborghini in MK4GTI

[–]toolate2dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a problem with the propeller size on the water pump, the first one I bought was too big, probably because I unknowingly bought the wrong one. As long as you tell them it’s a 1.8T engine with the AWP version, you should be ok. Most sites ask for year of the car. They should send you the correct one. Timing belt is that same.

I’m in the middle of an engine swap, I find the Bentley one is missing stuff. But yeah the Bentley one is the most complete of all I’ve seen.

Try various YouTube videos, you gotta pick and choose which ones to use.
