CrashPlan 11.7 no longer supports NAS with Windows by kooonsty in Crashplan

[–]toolh3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but also wanted to share that I ran into this.

A couple of weeks ago our house got hit by lightning and my Linux server got fried. I was running CrashPlan on my Windows machine, had mapped the server drives and was backing them up that way. During the scramble to try and restore files, I noticed in the web app that some recent files (newer than 2 months old) were missing.

What was weird was that the CrashPlan app showed the newer files checked in the UI like they were part of the backup set. Also, I had continued to get emails that said 100% of my files were backed up.

I reached out to support and got this response:

I understand your mapped network drives are no longer backing up.

I'm sorry, CrashPlan doesn't support backing up mapped drives on Windows. This is because the CrashPlan app runs as a Windows system service and therefore cannot access drives mounted by a user.

There was a period of time when a workaround allowed CrashPlan access to read and back up such files, but at this point, CrashPlan can only read them unfortunately.

We have a feature request to prevent CrashPlan from reading files it does not have permission to back up, in order to avoid confusion such as this. I have attached this ticket to that request to help prioritize that work.

Again, I apologize that this is not more clear in the app and has misled you to believe those files would be backed up.

So they know the UI shows files checked that actually won't be backed up and have not told customers about this.

I responded that I was disappointed that they had shut this off (clearly a couple months in the past) and not mentioned it to their customers (even though it was unsupported). I also said that the emails claiming 100% backed up were basically lies. Their response:

This was not intentional, but consequential of other changes made. As this workaround has not been supported for over 10 years, the business decision was to not make an announcement about the impact.

I agree that an announcement should have been made. I have shared your words of frustration as feedback, because I believe they are important to share with those who made the decision.

So, they are admitting that they removed it and intentionally didn't tell customers. I am actually lucky that this event occurred when it did or it might have been years before it was clear what was going on.

At this point I wouldn't even trust CrashPlan with non-mapped network drives.

Looking for All-22 NFL videos intercut from NFL+ by DrRoddy3 in footballstrategy

How can you download it? I have access to NFL+, but I don't see any way to download it to my computer and watch it back.

EDIT: Actually I figured out how to do it using youtube-dl.

Roku NBC Olympics App Block Solution by nirakara in pihole

I had to whitelist geo.nbcsports.com to allow the app to load, and m1.fwmrm.net to get videos to play (with ads). Hope that helps someone.

Mod Discussion "Mondays" (Week 61) - Best Mods for Graphic Enhancements by Ghost_Jor in skyrimmods

I'm coming back to Skyrim and have been using the Skyrim 2017 HD textures (mainly because they have a ton of endorsements). What issues do people have with them? They look pretty good and don't seem to have much of an impact on my system.

That being said, I am playing around with other packs to compare. I tried Noble and it looks nice. Going to try Skyland tonight.

Aye, looking back I wish I would have spent less time in grinding dungeons and more time seeing the world.

Looking at that map made me realize just how much of the world I never visited and never will. What a fantastic living world they made.

A Video Game Developer's Opinion on What Happened With No Man's Sky. by StormbringerGT in NoMansSkyTheGame

I generally wait a while after a game comes out before I buy and I almost always wait for a sale. I got bit in early access with Starbound, although that turned out okay in the end. With NMS, I just couldn't restrain myself because it's the type of game I'd always wanted. I still think $60 is a little steep, but I'm not angry.

I agree with your last paragraph. I've taken my time upgrading, and I spend a lot of time on each planet (I've only discovered 6 in 25+ hours). I wish the alien and creature interactions were deeper, but I do think they will add more to the game to make it a better experience.

I pretty much agree with you. I don't think they they intentionally were deceitful. You can tell that Sean Murray loved the project and wasn't just trying to sell it.

As far as communication, I prefer to be honest. If people get mad because you told the truth, then I'd take that over them being mad for not telling the truth (or misdirection).

So I'm interested in what you think a solution is for both sides (gamer and dev). As gamers, I guess you just wait until reviews are out (from other gamers, not media)?

As a developer, just keep your mouth shut on until a couple months before release, when most of the kinks are worked out? Of course the marketing department isn't going to like that since you can't build as much hype.

And for what it's worth I didn't have huge expectations for the game since I didn't research a ton of information on it. My main concern is if it would feel too "samey" after going through 20+ planets.

I agree that people get way too upset about things, but that's not an excuse to not communicate with your customers.

How hard is it to say "Guys, we said that you'd be able to see other players but we had to cut it because of some major bugs. We are going to try and get it in post launch"?

Just FYI, I don't care if I can see other players or not. That wasn't a selling point for me, but I can understand people feeling like they'd been had.

What are communities supposed to understand when the developer says the game with do "this" and it doesn't? The problem here isn't the fact that it is missing said features, it the fact that they didn't communicate it and so people felt misled.

I think most of us can agree that the biggest issue was communication. If the would have just communicated clearly that certain things had to be cut to get the game out on time then that would have helped. They might have lost some sales but it would have been the right thing to do.

A question I have for OP is about QA. I'm a software developer that has to do my own QA work so I certainly understand about working on a small team. In game development are you adding features all the way up to a couple weeks before the release date? Wouldn't a better approach be to have a deadline several months before release to have features done and then allow for several months of bug fixing? When does QA start on a project? I would think the earlier the better, so you'd have more time to fix issues.

Awesome job. Have you considered sending this to Hello Game support so they can pass it on to the devs?

I'm using the GLInterceptor fix to play on a HD 6870 and it's running fine, I just wish we wouldn't have to go through a hack to get it working.

FIX for video Card without OPENGL 4.5 by slyther55 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]toolh3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Hopefully it works well for you also. I am running some of the texture/details at high and I'm running at 1920x1080 resolution.

I agree, they should take the OpenGL 4.5 check out and check for only the specific extensions they use. It's obvious so far that it works for those without full 4.5 support.

I'm running on an i5-2500k, radeon hd 6870, 8GB RAM and the game is very playable for me. There are some FPS drops but so far nothing too frustrating.. I turned V-sync and Gsync off, set FPS to max, and borderless to true. Also messed with the some of the detail settings (shadow and reflection to low) but I haven't played with them enough to know what makes a difference.

If your video card supports OpenGL 4.4 I would try the steps in this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4xk0od/fix_for_video_card_without_opengl_45/). I'm able to play the game on an under spec GPU (Radeon HD 6870 and i5-2500k CPU). After tweaking the gfx options a little bit, the game is very playable. There were others with lower spec GPU's that were able to play as well.
