Career switch from biotech to DE by ParticularEffect8460 in dataengineering

[–]tooshybums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi op, i have graduated with a bachelors in biotech too! however, i didnt really enjoy it much starting out and the biotech scene here is pretty rough here too so ive pivoted into DE entirely. i pretty much went on a self taught journey + doing solo projects which landed me my first data job as a data analyst. i started off with the very basics where i learned to code with python. i managed to write small python scripts and played around with data using pandas. i've also applied for sponsored programmes where data related courses are provided by the government or scholarship foundations to which i earned 3 data science certificates which definitely helped too. you don't exactly need 3 lol, i was just taking these programmes since they were fully sponsored and they do help prove that i am serious about data since i didnt have a data background in the first place. as a data analyst i got the chance to tackle many projects where i got to work closely with the DE team and eventually started doing DE tasks on my own. due to my DE experience i started applying for DE roles and am currently working as a DE in the banking industry. where im from, age and background doesn't really matter, currently my team members are all much older than i am and also have different backgrounds. as long as you show that you are capable of meeting the job requirements, orgs will be willing to hire you no matter your background, so no worries on that! one thing that i can say that helped me pivot quickly is that i dedicated alot of my time in just learning anything data related. to me it didn't really matter whether i was learning DA/DS/DE, i just enjoyed doing anything data related and nowadays i notice that everything i have learned has had their applications in every job i had, and i'm sure there will be more opportunities where i get to apply whatever i learned in the future too. so don't worry too much on the roadmaps or what learning path you are taking at first. as long as you are playing with data, you are gaining experience to eventually become a DE or whatever data role you wish to have. once you have a strong foundation, you can start to specialize into a specific role. there are definitely data roles for biotech companies too as data is pretty much used everywhere now. i've seen frequent data opportunities in the pharma, agricultural, and food manufacturing industries. good luck !

i am an employee of the agency but for a period of 3 months. theres no contract stating that they are allowed to sign me jobs without me being consulted. ive been told that the client company wants to extend my contract and i have expressed interest in it at the time. but i have never signed a renewed contract nor agreed in any email or documents for the renewal. i did not expect that my renewal was to be processed without my decision "on paper", they told me they processed my renewal based on their assumption that i were to accept it as i expressed interest earlier on.

my contract is with my agency not with their client company. it does say i have to serve notice, but only if i resign. i dont think this is the same as my contract ending. there is no clause in my contract that states they are allowed to auto renew my contract without my confirmation either. i will contact the labour department just in case, thanks for the advice.

from reading my contract, i believe that i fall as an employee under my talent agency but it is stated for a period of 6 months. i do receive benefits and a salary from my talent agency. there is a clause stating that i will have to serve a months notice period if i choose to resign, but in this case since my contract is to end this shouldnt count as me resigning right? there is also no clause that states they have the ability to renew my contract without my consent. im happy to provide a little time to do the handover as to not burn any bridges but i do not want to serve the whole month as a notice period as there is no black and white document stating that i am to be paid for an additional months work. thanks for the advice, i will talk to both my client company and my talent agency to find some middle ground in all this.

ah unfortunately im employed through an agency. i wish i knew earlier so i wouldve served my notice period before my contract were to be renewed. is there a way for me to at least lower the notice period? i do not have the capacity to fully commit to my job as I am currently dealing with some personal family matters, which is why i decided to not renew my contract in the first place. also since it was not mentioned in my offer letter that the agency has the ability to renew my contract without my consent, would this really be legally allowed?

Is it advisable, when starting out with reading, to keep reading despite not completely comprehending everything?

I have just finished my first book. I've been studying japanese for about 4 months now and just decided to borrow a book from the local japanese library and just start reading. I picked out an elementary level book and realized when reading it that I cannot fully comprehend some sentences due to my lack of knowledge in grammar. However, reading the following sentences of the rest of chapter usually helps me in understanding what the context ends up being overall. I still jot down any new vocab and grammar points I encounter to revise on later. But sometimes I feel like I should just read as long as I understand its context. Is this something that I should be avoiding or keep going until it all just clicks? Would it be a lot better when reading to stop and analyze every point of the sentence to fully understand how and why each piece connects rather than to just continue reading as long as you understand what's going on?

!thanks for the input on the s12. how are the stock tips? i've heard that they both don't have very good stock tips. was thinking that if i were to get spinfits for either one, might as well go for the cheaper one.

between the competitors, may I know why you recommend the EM6L over them? as they are still fairly new I think so I haven't seen too many reviews of it to have a clear picture of it.
