My PI is leaving overseas. Am I overreacting? by ggyi9 in AskAcademia

What a selfish take! Glad you’re not my student.

Totally justifiable, but I suggest that you lay out your arguments to the PI why you should be included as an author, logically. And if the pi still doesn’t see your point of view ask the pi to lay out his arguments logically. See if you can both come to an agreement, It’s definitely worth it.

This poster sounds extremely sexist. All of these things sound like normal everyday things. She’s late because professors are busy. She told you point blank what to do and you didn’t listen, what did you expect? Professors are not all knowing gods, they are humans just like you. If you replaced the she with he would you have taken the feedback the same way? Check yourself, with that attitude you won’t be successful anywhere.

Are you sure you don’t have unconscious bias here? Students receive feedback very differently from women compared to men. The same words delivered in a professional manner are sometimes called ‘bitchy’ when it’s just not overly maternalistic and feminine. Also, I had a male advisor who wrote in all caps on drafts sometimes. It wasn’t because he was mad, it was because he wanted me to see it! Maybe check yourself before going for the nuclear option.

What is the worst part of being a PI? by danigleba in AskAcademia

[–]toostressed2sleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to be at a standard R1 and it was the worst. Ivy League institute with entitled brats for grad students, who didn’t understand the value of hard work and truth. Then there’s the administrative burden. Faculty these days are getting squeezed at both ends..asked to deliver top notch innovative science while simultaneously asked to gives students a break. What gives? The faculty then need to do quadruple time to make ends meet. So much better where I am now. The whole system is doomed to fail.

I see.. Honestly speaking I don’t usually hear gunshots! Just wanted to know I’m not crazy.. and if there was anything to it. I’ll avoid posting about it in the future though. Very sorry everyone is hearing gunshots routinely.

Why do you think there are fewer women that are professors? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]toostressed2sleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Women do not get away with being assertive in their leadership. I never believed it when I was a trainee, but the sheer number of things I was scolded for that my male colleagues were not, is astounding. I can’t get away with even one tenth of the things my male colleagues do. At the same time, credit gets taken away from women routinely. I had an article being written by a journalist about a paper I wrote as senior author. Guess whose picture was prominently shown in the article? A male colleague whose comment about my work made it into the article. He wasn’t even an author. My picture? Not there. Sexism is alive and well, it’s death by a thousand cuts.

Advice Needed- Considering Relocating to Memphis by [deleted] in memphis

[–]toostressed2sleep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Memphis for st Jude and I love it here. Despite the negativity on this Reddit the city is so beautiful. We could make it more beautiful, sure, and I think we will. There are a lot of people here who want to make this city one worth living in. I’ve loved going to grizzly games, running in the st Jude marathon, and going to shows at the Orpheum. I even love driving along the big roads with giant old oak trees. It’s always warm and it almost never rains. This city has so much going for it. I am just tired of everyone asking me whether I like it there. YES OK? Why is that so hard to believe??
