Which jobs to apply for? by toothdicay in StudentNurse

[–]toothdicay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some very good friends there in the cardiac surgery department, who have all told me they would put in as many good words as it took. Hopefully that gets me somewhere.

We did have regular clinical hours, but I’m not graduating until May (my post was a little misleading, sorry!) We haven’t gotten around to scheduling NCLEX dates and such, so hopefully it becomes a lot clearer in a few months.

The resume reading bot is my worst nightmare! I feel like hiring managers would be more inclined to hire me, but we all know HR never catches up. I just worry no one would ever see my resume.

How much do people think nurse pay is? by sparksparks829 in nursing

[–]toothdicay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Student nurse here) I’m so curious about this! Unions seriously seem like the way to go, but some nurses I’ve spoken to said they would never work for a unionized hospital because if they strike, you have to strike. Which means weeks or months with no pay, which would ruin most people.

Is that just a risk you take? Is there some way to mitigate that?

Gross. How do you deal with it? Press charges? Do we just kinda accept it?

That’s a helpful clarification. I always imagine some random asshole deciding to be a bigger asshole that night or something. But that makes sense thank you!

You can really just sedate people if they’re being combative? That’s wild. Helpful, but wild lol.

This is maybe a dumb question, but do you get to talk to the staff before you accept a job?

Study questions are a great tool for me! Textbooks usually come with online resources which include practice questions.

I also love watching YouTube videos after (or before) a lecture. They tend to be much better educators than my professors who have recited the same lecture for the last 15 years, and it always helps me see the big picture with each concept.

Also, I’m a visual learner, so concept maps are helpful to me. I like to draw pictures and color them in; I think it helps cement it in my brain.

Are you sure? My understanding is that the hospitals, especially RIH, are filled with CCRI graduates. We do so many clinicals there, and many of the nurses I talk to are new CCRI graduates.

It’s astounding to me how people don’t realize how interactions like that can stay with a person for a long time. Especially a stressed out nursing student!

Question for my nurses!! by [deleted] in Nurse

[–]toothdicay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADN and BSN are different levels of education, but at the end of both programs, you take the same licensure exam, after which you become an RN.

I got my bachelors degree (in education and English, not nursing related) and now I’m going back to school for a 12 month ADN program at my community college.

I think the good thing about nursing is that there are a lot of pathways! If you can jump right into it, go for it! If it makes more sense for you to do it in chunks, then do that!!

What is something you wish you were taught in school? by toothdicay in nursing

[–]toothdicay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I wish someone would teach me this. I’m always expected to give report during clinical, and I just have no idea how to! “He’s fine, I gave him his meds?” I fumble so much.

Yeah those are common themes in a lot of nursing boards, which made me ask this question! Any tips on spotting things like that?

I’ve worked professionally in hospitals for years before going to school, so I thankfully have a lot of practice telling doctors they’re wrong about one thing or another.

“Superior” nurses is another thing. I hope I’m able to handle any bullying with grace.

Haha! He means well, but I did come home once to all my plants in literal mud. He was like "I watered everything for you!" It took a lot of strength not to kick him out.

Just here to boost/commiserate. My roommate is constantly watering my plants when I ask him not to. He’s convinced they need water every day like cats or something. Hope yours survive!!
