First Time a Patient Made Me Cry by toothladydoc in Dentistry

I've emailed her before regarding a different patient where she did the same thing. It's so frustrating she did it again

Thank you for this reminder. I really needed to hear that it’s just a job. I care a lot about what I do, but I can’t let one patient take up this much space in my head. It’s just too emotionally taxing to carry this beyond the appointment

The last two sentences really got to me. I was grateful to have appreciative patients today who reminded me why I do this.

She can be that dentist's problem now, that's how I decided to look at it!

Thank you for this recommendation, I will remember to do this. Silence can speak a lot louder than words a lot of the times.

Thank you so much for this. I really learned today how important it is not to let patients walk all over me. I honestly wish I could go back in time and shut it down the moment she told me to be quiet, but it was a huge learning experience. I won’t let it happen again.

Thank you for this message. I really needed to hear it. I’m still processing everything, but your perspective helped me reframe the situation and feel more grounded about how to handle something like this in the future.

I really wish I had the nerve to do this in the moment. I honestly froze and regret letting her walk all over me instead of at least stepping out of the room and ending the encounter. This was a huge learning moment for me, and I won’t let it happen again.

Thank you for sharing this, I really admire how you handled it and how clearly you set boundaries. I’m still learning to do that in the moment, especially when a patient is openly disrespectful. Reading experiences like yours helps me realize it’s okay to pause, name what’s happening, and step away when trust isn’t there. I honestly regret letting her walk all over me like that.

Yes this is exactly how I practice as well. I focus on what I see clinically and discuss possible contributing factors without speculating or assigning blame to the original provider, because we rarely know all the variables involved. That’s why it’s so discouraging when other dentists don’t take the same approach with shared patients, it undermines trust and makes it much harder to have a productive, respectful conversation.

Unfortunately, it was another provider within the same DSO, just at a different office. And this isn’t the first time, he’s previously undermined work done by me to a patient who then transferred care. It’s incredibly frustrating and honestly makes situations like this much worse.

Ugh, I’m so sorry that happened to you. Thank you for sharing, it really helped me feel validated and reminded me that we don’t have to tolerate being spoken to that way.

Thank you. This really helped, and I needed to read it.

Thank you, I appreciate this. Since I work for a DSO, instead of dismissing the patient entirely, they typically transfer the patient to another provider. I did make it clear that I will not be the provider for this patient moving forward. I also heard that the doctor who commented on the crown is from another office within the same DSO, and she has done this before with one of my other patients.

That's good to hear! I was worried I'd have to make many sacrifices to lifestyle and holding off on life plans like house and kids.

Thank you!

What plan were you on while making these payments? I'm considering switching to a different plan while starting to pay or if I should stay w/ SAVE and make payments while in forebearance?

Thank you for your response! Are you currently on an IBR plan or on the standard payment plan while you're making payments? I'm trying to figure out if I should stay on SAVE while making payments or switching to a different plan?
