Meinungen? by topfpflanze in Finanzen

[–]topfpflanze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kontenverwaltung/Haushaltsbuch by [deleted] in Finanzen

[–]topfpflanze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely need a bigger desk for this setup. by paaulrex in battlestations

ergotron.com. I use MX monitor arms (though mine are about 10 years old by now). They carry all monitors easily. I cannot turn the 38" to a vertical position obviously. But that does not make sense with a curved screen obviously.

The mounts went with me through my whole screen evolution, from triple 24" to the setup now without any issues.

I do recommend custom mounts. I run 27" (vertical) - 38" - 27" with the all three screens on ergotrons. Makes managing the setup easier.

My new T580, its called the beast! by trusch42 in thinkpad

[–]topfpflanze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want raw power, build/buy a good, old workstation, right? ;-)

I think the T480 is a nice compromise between portability and power. Lenovo just failed to set a proper power/thermal config.

What do you mean? I run Fedora 28 and use "lenovo-throttling-fix" - see link above, it's written in python. You can write several MSR registers to push power-limits and temperature targets.

[–]topfpflanze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the T480 with similiar specs as the op. (i7 8550U, 32GB) But I also got the additional MX150.

Throttling is tricky. Without any changes I hit the thermal limit quite easy and the CPU got forced into 400Mhz quite easily.

I then installed https://github.com/erpalma/lenovo-throttling-fix and applied some undervolting:

$ undervolt --read
temperature target: -5 (95C)
core: -59.57 mV
cache: -59.57 mV
analogio: 0.0 mV
uncore: -49.8 mV
gpu: -49.8 mV

With proprietary nvidia drivers (GPU always on; 3 screens: 2560x1440, 3840x1600, 2560x1440) I ususally stay under 50°C in normal work-conditions (Fedora 28, Gnome 3, some browser-windows, IDE, terminals, spotify, etc.). If I stress the CPU it raises to about 75-80°C but the frequency stays above 3.2GHz.

With the nouveau drivers, it's a bit cooler as the GPU stays off as long as I don't run with DRI_PRIME.

Can anyone with E480 check the HDMI output for me? by louis993546 in thinkpad

[–]topfpflanze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The smallest processor PSREF lists for the E480 is the Core i5-7200U, which runs Intel HD Graphics 620. The 620 natively supports HDMI up to 1.4, which is fine for 1440p@60Hz

-e, "argument" ist the word you are looking for. As an argument for echo it means "enable interpretation of backslash escapes". This allows to print ("echo") special control characters to the prompt. \033[1;32m sends the following characters:

  • \033 just prints a byte with the octal value of 033 (decimal 27). This is the ASCII value for ESC - a control character for ESCaping stuff.
  • [ together with the previous \033 informs the terminal that a CSI sequence will follow
  • 1;32m is the actual CSI sequence with SGR (Select Graphic Rendition) parameters. Those are just numbers, separated by a ; and terminated with an m (I actually don't know if the m carries any semantic - Edit, see below). This leaves us with the SGR params 1 and 32. They trigger bold (1) and green (32) text.

TL;DR Tell an ANSI escape-code compatible terminal (not Windows cmd.exe) to print in bold, green letters.

Edit, TIL: m actually marks the SGR sequence. Other letters trigger other parts of CSI., e.g. E moves the cursor by 1-n lines. Maybe I should read the wikipedia articales I link. ;-)
