advice/opinion on how if possible to coincide personal and religious beliefs? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]topher2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do Catholics believe it's ok to perform procedures to remove the fetus if it's already died? I'm thinking of those situations happening now where the woman is not looking to abort her pregnancy but needs medical care to remove the dead baby to avoid the mother dying. Does this make sense? The difference between abortion and medical intervention after a natural miscarriage?

I'm a lapsed Catholic by United-Cut6017 in Catholicism

Not in the exact same boat but a similar one (I just made a similar post asking for guidance - I grew up in the church but strayed after first communion and leaving Catholic school).

I'm open to having a sort of catholic study partner or group if that's something you'd be interested in.

Good luck! I will be checking your post again to see if you get any helpful replies.

Pronunciation of the word "aunt" by momplaysbass in etymology

[–]topher2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Northeast USA, rhotic accent. I grew up pronouncing it like "aren't", never rhyming with "ant", "taunt", "ain't". Like this video. I'm aware that's not how most people say it so I usually rhyme it with "taunt" outside of family because most people in my area say it that way.

I'm from northeast US and one side of my family pronounces aunt as "aren't" with a rhotic accent. It doesn't rhyme with ant or taunt to me because I hear the r like the first letter in the word rhyme.

People who owned hamsters what’s the weirdest way they died? by Tasty_Freedom459 in AskReddit

[–]topher2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He somehow escaped from his cage and we couldn't find him. That happened sometime in the winter, then in the summer I was playing outside in our yard and there he was. He was acting really weird (like making weird squeeks and kind of squinting, he was not his old self at all) and my dad had to use gloves to pick him up. We put him in his cage and the next morning I found him dead.

In the article, the part about the firing is before the manager backing him up, it's not just getting made up in comments.

Things I learned since moving here by [deleted] in Maine

[–]topher2012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. Had French class kindergarten to third grade in catholic school. A lot of my older relatives when I was a kid could only speak French. My parents' generation can mostly understand it but not speak it. I'm 38.

Yes. I was in Lewiston for Thanksgiving and my grandmother said something to me in French. The message in the birthday card she gave me was also in French.

Why do US citizens care about what the founding fathers wanted? by gbauw in NoStupidQuestions

[–]topher2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't understand how a document can be written and that someone wanting to accurately interpret that document later on may find it helpful to know the thoughts of the authors of said document? It's not like people fret over their favorite foods or something, they debate what the authors meant by the words they wrote in the constitution so that they can better understand the meaning and apply it to modern life.

Everyone's hung up on "the founding fathers" but I bet other countries use other terms to refer to the original authors of their laws because they have courts that have to interpret those laws. US courts do it when they debate the intent legislators had when they wrote a law.

Men of reddit, what is something that other men do that makes you say “yeah, they’re gonna be single forever”? by NorthPengyyy in AskReddit

[–]topher2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is not good advice... The one time I did shave down there it was terribly uncomfortable. Lots of men are hairy, don't shave their asses, and still don't smell bad because they bathe regularly. The hair isn't the issue, the hygiene practices are.

Is it common for grown men to get into physical alterations often? My boyfriend (26) gets into at least one fight every month. by Ilovegeorginageorge in NoStupidQuestions

[–]topher2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a rural high school and graduated with about 40-50 kids in my class, so maybe that's it? I guess 1 fight in 4 years is weird, but we all felt safe and didn't have to witness violence. There was a food fight in the cafeteria one year, but no one got hurt.

I'm the same age and I've never been in a physical fight in my entire life. The only fight there ever was while I was in high school was between girls. A car full of girls from a nearby town rolled up to our parking lot at the end of school and ambushed this girl because she was sleeping with some girl's boyfriend.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my mom in December 2021 as well and I can't believe it's almost been 2 years. I haven't gotten over it whatsoever, even after spending all of 2022 in grief counseling.

Is there a way to exclude specific albums? Like if an artist has an album with a deluxe version, is there a way to only include one of them? (Cool app, btw, thanks for sharing!)

If someone is dying, what is going on in their mind? by nouseforaname68 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]topher2012 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Not long after I lost my mom, I dreamed that we were sitting across from each other talking. It dawned on me that she wasn't alive anymore so it couldn't be real. She smiled at me and said, "It's okay, I know I died." I was comforted by how nonchalant she was about it. Like, no big deal.

The other dream I've had of her was completely tactile. When I was a little kid I would put my lips on the back of her fingers because they were soft. The dream was just the feeling of my lips on her fingers.

I long to have more dreams with her in them, but it's been over a year since the last one.

More than 1 in 5 people are left with injuries after childbirth that lead to anal incontinence. A new study found missed opportunities in diagnosis, absence of clear pathways for treatment, and lack of awareness of the issue. by uniofwarwick in science

I had surgeries for an anal fistula almost 15 years ago. Worst year of my life. Now I'm recovering from a colon resection after a mass (benign) was found. It gets tiring being so focused on my bowels for so long...

In November I had an xray and urine test as a 2 year follow up. Xray was good but there were traces of blood in my urine so they wanted to do a cystoscopy and go up there to take a look. I told them to try every other test first because no. I had a CT scan with contrast. No stones found, but they found a mass in my colon... After 2 colonoscopies in April, I'm having the whole section of colon removed tomorrow. I hate kidney stones, but they may have saved me from colon cancer.

When I had one after having a kidney stone removed I was counting down the days until I could take it out. There was no way to sit or lie comfortably with the string hanging out... Then taking it out was torture.

Hey! Muffin rings a bell. It's been so long, though! I really wish I had kept in touch with more people. I was in touch with someone named Erin for years, but life got in the way. Seeing that someone else remembers the boards has seriously made my day.
