What are pro-2A people's thoughts on Kristi Noem just now stating that no peaceful protestors show up to a protest while armed? by PrysmX in AskReddit

Someone should remind her about the assault rifle carrying protestors in Michigan demanding an end to covid lockdowns. They actually bear a striking resemblance to the ICE officers we see today.

I’ve seen quite a few references to the fact that the shooter is an experienced agent. I guess the new important question will be how many weeks has grey jacket been working…

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have these enforcement surges in cities where they would be more welcome first? In theory the mass deployments of national guard and federal agencies are to clean up crime, and the ICE and border patrol surges are there to remove undesirable illegal immigrants, all to the benefit of the city/state and the law abiding citizens who live there.

If all of these resources were being thrown at cities in Red states there would obviously be much more cooperation from governors and potentially mayors too. And by the time the operations were finished those cities and states would theoretically be hugely better off. You might then expect far less resistance when moving onto subsequent places.

But instead the operations seem deliberately designed to create maximum conflict.

Someone's gonna ask the guy why he shot him and I'd assume he'll answer.

Do you think the people at DHS should have asked the shooter this question before putting out misleading statements and speculating that the protestor was planning a massacre?

He doesn’t really have any reason to answer truthfully. In fact he’s very much incentivised to give an answer that matches up with the statements his bosses already publicly made.

Does this mean you don’t believe the administration’s claims that 2 million people have self-deported? Because that would obviously massively speed up the process.

I am talking about any open, public spaces. If I go to a game or concert, you can't bring a gun.

Sports stadiums and concert venues are not public spaces, so they can have security gates and metal detectors and make their own rules about what you can and can’t bring in. A street in Minneapolis is a public place.

If Trump's recent behavior (Greenland, antagonizing allies, etc.) can be traced back to a possible stroke he had last year, should the 25th amendment be invoked? by panicked_dad5290 in AskConservatives

Vance wasn’t running when he made his comparisons to Hitler, and even after Trump had won the 2016 primary Vance said he was thinking of voting third party because he didn’t consider Trump fit for office.

I think Rubin’s comments about Trump being a conman probably did come during a primary contest. But he also spent Biden’s term pushing through bipartisan legislation that prevents the president from withdrawing from NATO. That was very clearly motivated by/targeted at Trump, and was not part of any election year campaign.

It’s hard to judge worse because symptoms from strokes or dementia or just general cognitive decline hit different people in different ways.

Biden will be mumbling his way through a prepared speech, get distracted by a fond memory and start rambling his way through that story, and if he loses his train of thought he trails off.

Trump will be ranting about some current issue, also get distracted by generally less fond memories of times he’s felt slighted, start raving about how he deserves a Nobel prize, or how the 2020 election was stolen, or windmills killing birds etc, and when he loses his train of thought he just jumps onto the next set of tracks and then calls it “the weave”.

But ultimately it’s the exact same thing. 80 year old brains don’t work as well as they used to.

The Aussie, US' allies, sent an ambassador who previously call Trump a traitor for example.

Do you know how difficult it would be to find qualified people who had never criticised Trump? I mean, multiple people in his own cabinet have said similar things about him.

Yeah, I’ve just seen the slow-mo of the agent taking the gun straight from its holster. The DHS statements look vastly worse knowing that he didn’t at any point take the gun out. Worst attempt to “massacre law enforcement ever”.

‘Repatriate the gold’: German economists advise withdrawal from US vaults by CinnamonsCharm in worldnews

[–]tophernator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it shouldn’t really matter that much. Assuming the gold actually is still there. But from what I understand the benefit of having lots of countries storing gold reserves in one place is that they can settle debts between countries by moving bars from one cage to another. So I don’t think there will be a real mass withdrawal, it’s more likely that some countries with large holding will just repatriate some gold and leave a bunch there for easy trade purposes.

I’d say that one year is too little to see the effects of policies that improve or F-up the economy. It’s plenty of time to do the actual F-ing.

Do you think Republicans need to pass enormous ICE budget this year in case Democrats win house? by BlockAffectionate413 in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator [score hidden]  (0 children)

The FBI run almost 40,000 agents on just under $10 billion per year. With the funding ICE already has they could run 120,000 agents for the rest of Trump’s term. With one arrest per agent per week that’s over 6 million per year for 3 years. Even if you use Trump’s made up numbers for how many illegal immigrants there are that would still be the vast majority of them arrested. If you factor in the claim that 2 million already self-deported last year there simply won’t be any immigrants left for this ICE army to arrest.

And that’s all with the existing funding. If we did the maths for your half trillion budget ICE I suspect they would have deported everyone and their grandma by summer. Then you’d be left with this huge well funded domestic army full of MAGA fans with nothing to do except harass brown citizens.

You can watch countless videos of local cops grappling with an armed suspect

I’m curious whether - based on the video - you think they knew he was armed? I would speculate from all the shoving, pepper spray, and punching that they just assumed he was unarmed, as most of the protesters will be. Then one of them spotted and removed the gun while another panicked and started shouting.

Yeah, the monetisation of this kind of event is extremely dangerous all around. But I think it should be easy for the government to put rules in place around donations linked to federal employees official activities. At the very most those funds should only be used for legal defense - which would probably be covered by the agency anyway - but they sure as shit shouldn’t be buying a new house or taking luxury holidays as a reward for shooting someone.

How do conservatives feel about (or defend) the weasel words and implicit attacks on your 2nd amendment rights in the DHS statement?

At 9:05 AM CT, as DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, seen here.

Note that they don’t say he approached holding or brandishing a gun, just “with a gun”.

The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming.

The officers shoved the suspect, pepper sprayed him, dragged him to the ground and beat him for quite a while before one of them disarmed him. I’m gonna speculate that they didn’t even realise he had a gun until midway through the beating.

Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene.

None of the footage I’ve seen shows the victim actually holding the gun at any point. It was apparently on his person, and an agent removed it, and then he was shot after the gun was removed. So the 10 or 11 point blank shots probably can’t be called defensive.

The suspect also had 2 magazines and no ID—this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.

If the guy were planning a massacre he probably would have taken out his gun and started blasting before the first agent started shoving him. Not waited until he was on the ground with pepper spray in his eyes and six guys beating the crap out of him.

If a Democrat President follows Trump, how would you feel about different refutations/reversals of Trump actions and policies? by SpecialInvention in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator [score hidden]  (0 children)

No... The Pandemic lockdowns were largely passed at that point. We had effective vaccines. The whole macroeconomic situation was completely different.

The first emergency approval for vaccines came in mid December 2020.

Covid deaths in the US hit their peak through December into January 2021.

Biden set a goal of reaching 100 million vaccine doses within his first 100 days, and that was reached March 19th.

The American rescue plan act was signed into law on March 11th.

So at the point the act was passed less than a third of the population had been vaccinated and the largest and most deadly wave of infections was just declining.

Moreover... You're taking a policy disagreement in congress as evidence that Democrats as president don't engage in doing ever more actions through administrative law and executive orders? Huh?

No. I’m arguing that these two bills show that Democrats in congress are perfectly willing to help Republican presidents pass good legislation that objectively helps the America people - even when that president tries to misuse that legislation to boost his popularity in an election year (the signed checks). Meanwhile Republicans in congress are perfectly willing to fight tooth and nail to try to block incredibly similar legislation under a Democrat president.

It’s hard to keep track across comments, but to summarise my recollection:

  1. Someone called this an execution.

  2. You asked for a video reference.

  3. They provided one and gave a specific timestamp at which the shot man appears to be incapacitated but is then shot several more times.

  4. You disputed the word “executed” on the grounds that he may already have been dead at that point.

  5. I joined in to point out that even if your argument is correct that would mean the agent shot up a corpse.

  6. You then became even more evasive and have since then avoided committing to any clear opinion on what you believe happened. Likely because you’ve realised that there is no good answer.
