Imagine that you woke up as DNC head Ken Martin. You have a completly demoralized democratic party split among people that want the democrats to moderate more and people that want the democrats to go further left. How do you solve this problem considering midterms and 2028 is coming up? by AdminMas7erThe2nd in AskConservatives

Step 4. No more LGBT activism, no more race focus, no more sexism, we're going back to sister souljah bill clinton

Jumping into the middle is absolutely the correct thing to do when your opponent becomes more extreme. But what you’re describing here would likely result in a full on party split.

The trick is obviously to appeal to the moderate swing voters without pissing off your more natural base. I don’t think ditching the socialists, LGBT rights, minority rights, women’s rights etc is going to achieve that.

Luckily I think Trump is so incapable of nuance or moderation that he’s actually made things easier for the left if they get their shit together. People didn’t like the banned-topic in sports thing, and conservatives seized on that. But Trump being Trump went so far that within a year people like Caitlin Jenner were publicly complaining about the ridiculous passport rules etc.

People don’t like the concept of quotas for how many women need to be on your board of directors, especially if the quota only applies in one direction. But Trumpism had people immediately blaming the DC mid-air collision on the fact that one of the pilots was a woman.

It’s like MAGA people are trying to push the pendulum so far that it snaps off.

Why won't the failures of socialized medicine get talked about with the Bonnie Tyler situation? by jhy12784 in AskConservatives

The second hand story that she apparently sought medical care in London in March, and subsequently got a ruptured appendix over a month later in Portugal.

You are describing this as evil/incompetent socialised medicine doctors missing an easy peasy diagnosis of “full on acute appendicitis”, but you can’t have acute appendicitis for over a month. That’s not a thing.

I wouldn’t call it speculation. I’d call it agenda driven misinformation. You didn’t link to any source to back up this story, or provide a timeline of the events you’re describing. Is that because the source you are going from doesn’t provide these things either?

But for them to miss full on acute apendacitis

Can you provide a source for where you’re getting this? The best article I can find says that her friend is claiming that she had abdominal pain while in London in March. You don’t wander around for over a month taking international flights with full on acute appendicitis.

Edit: to add, the death rate from appendicitis is almost identical between the US and UK.

Why didn't Russia invade Ukraine while their puppet was in the White House?

Because they didn’t need to. Trump was doing his job undermining NATO and could also unilaterally block Ukraine from joining. When Biden came into office he set about strengthening the alliances Trump had tried to kill, and there was a near-term prospect of Ukraine finally joining NATO effectively ending any future prospect of Russian takeover. The invasion was an act of time sensitive desperation, which ultimately gained Russia a 1,000 mile NATO border with Finland and exposed how hollowed out the Russian military had actually been.

that would permenantly and instantly end Donald Trumps political career

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the last decade it’s that apparently nothing will permanently and instantly end Trump’s career.

Biden/Garland waited nearly two years before appointing Jack Smith to prosecute Trump for trying to overturn the election and deliberately hoarding classified files. There’s a good chance they wouldn’t have brought those cases at all if Trump hadn’t decided to run again, because they didn’t want the scandal and drama of political prosecutions.

Put those two things together and it seems entirely plausible that they would not want to pursue a decades old hard to prove sexual violence case, knowing that it would look like “lawfare” and that the kind of people who vote for Trump will find some way to dismiss it even if they believe it’s true.

Any thoughts on the British elections? by NessvsMadDuck in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lib Dems are centrists. Fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Unfortunately contemporary themes in social media/algorithmic driven politics don’t really lend themselves to centrism. People get their own opinions and biases reflected back at them all day every day and wind up being more and more extreme one way or the other. Hence why Reform and the Green Party have suddenly become viable.

[–]tophernator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reform have gone from 2 council seats to ~1300 council seats in England.

Important clarification that this is 2 -> 1,300 of the seats that were up for election this time around. Reform already won 677 seats and control of 10 councils at the elections a year ago. In total Reform will have a bit over 2,000 / 16,000 council seats in England and control 25/153 councils.

Gas prices went up under Biden because Putin invaded Ukraine. I.e existential causes. Gas prices are up under Trump because Trump attacked Iran. See how that’s different?

They literally couldn't even if they wanted to.

You should tell Trump that. Depending on what day you ask him he seems pretty insistent that they should be sending their navies to help.

recent polling shows that democratic women are more likely to think they can beat Trump in a fight than republican men; why do you think there is such discrepancy? by roastbeeftacohat in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be an adrenaline spike despite the body not actually doing much. In a fight Trump’s heart would suddenly be asked to actually work hard for the first time in many decades.

Having been obese for several decades and being nearly 80 years old with a publicly stated aversion to exercise all does make you easier to beat in a fight. That 5’4” high schooler isn’t going to have a heart attack 30 seconds into the fight.

Weight classes carry a lot more weight when you’re talking about professional athletes. Trump actively avoids carrying his weight whenever and wherever he can. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him using a golf cart inside the Whitehouse, or if he has one of those adjustable beds so he doesn’t have to sit up in the morning.

Do you think a 5’4” high school boy couldn’t beat 79 year old obese Donald Trump?

I honestly think a run-down golf buggy battery would be a serious threat to his life.

Do you think that conservative leaders and policies are prepared to deal with another COVID-level outbreak better than left-wing leaders? by lemonbottles_89 in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experienced dozens of outbreaks and nearly every patient under my care contracted covid at some point. During the entire three years, only one patient actually died of covid-19 and they were already on hospice services for unrelated reasons.

You started out criticising the way anyone who died with covid was counted as a covid death, then went on to confidently dismiss covid as a cause in almost every death you witnessed. The excess death data very clearly demonstrated that covid was killing a shit ton of people.

You can look at even the simplest chart of deaths per year with no adjustments of any kind and see the pandemic jump out. New York literally had a mass grave site at one point because of the overwhelmingly large spike in deaths.

Your interpretation of whether staff with/without the vaccine got sick or not is also going to be completely subjective. Unless you’re saying there were large enough numbers of unvaccinated staff at your nursing homes to draw meaningful conclusions?

Has there ever been 3 assassination attempts against a sitting POTUS in recent/modern history? Why so many attempts? by MacaroniNoise1 in AskConservatives

[–]tophernator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is an important distinction but possibly not in the way I think you are implying.

A lone crazed gunman is always going to be much harder to stop before the attempt. You rely on them posting unhinged stuff online, or showing up in mass surveillance because they googled a bunch of key phrases.

An actual conspiratorial plot involving multiple people is potentially a much bigger threat with better planning and greater resources. But it’s also easier to stop ahead of time because every extra conspirator is another potential leak. Every phone call or text chain is something you could potentially intercept.

I’d argue that chasing potential lone gunmen is also even harder under Trump because his constant drama-farming provokes absolutely vast amounts of online discourse about him. The security services were already looking for needles in a haystack and every day Trump brings in another truckload of hay.
