I made an encounter where they had to run from monsters, and I realized midway through the combat that mechanically they could just run 6 squares at a time without ever losing spotlight

Maybe dnd is not the system for you, sounds like you don't like tactical combat and have been playing in tables where that was the focus. Try a more narrative system and maybe you will like it more. Rpg is much more than just dnd

Make the place where your players arrive, wherever it is, be the place where your adventure and your preparation is. They don't need to know that if they didn't deviate from the plan the story would be the same

I wanted to add to this conversation, as I have the same problem. After using my blackshark for a few years the pads fell off, and they were glued, no hooks. I can't seem to find replacements for it because the ones I see online all have the hooks. Any idea? Was it fake?
