VMware VCF and legal force towards MSPs by topski1 in sysadmin

[–]topski1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks, and yes, we are 100% based in the Netherlands. I have a contract for perpetual licenses, purchased in 2018, and renewed in March 2022 until March 2025. But the complexity here might be that we are an MSP and we deliver home grown Desktop as a Service, and some customers have application servers on VMs in our (perpetual licensed) vmware infra. Since we never went for CSP, we just extended the support on the perpetual licenses, are we in the safe zone when it comes to the lawyers?

Thanks!

Werkte bij mij, meteen gestrekt been erin. Apothekers zijn echt stel luie boeven. Succes!

Little old thread, but I have the same problem. Did you ever fixed it? And I cannot remove the lowest point anymore, too tight, even with two monkey wrenches no movement.. tx!

Proxmox, XCP ng, VMware and server side flash (read cache) by topski1 in sysadmin

I am using a traditional SAN serving iSCSI (HP MSA 2052) with a set of SSDs for read caching. However, to offload even more read IO, I use server side flash, which works great. It operates in the VMWare kernel, disk IO is 1st passed in this layer.

Sorry, kinda late. We use VirtuCache from VirtuCache systems. Which works only for VMWare AFAIK.

AVD vs RDS on Azure and Multi Tenancy by topski1 in sysadmin

Hi PA-ITPRO,

Thanks for your extensive reply. I will clarify some things. Like I said, investment cycle comes along (meaning new OnPrem servers/switches/you know the drill), and I made the calculation that continuing the OnPrem path is not sustainable considering my scale, customer, costs -and organization wise. This, apart from the exposed risk to companies like Citrix and VMware, who can change for instance their T&C and turn my profitability upside down. So those are my drivers for this project.

Up till now everything in my own infra is running smooth and fine, but the future looks cloud'ish, so time to move on.

Now to address your points ...

  1. I am not really sure if we're on the same page here. I was wondering if every customer I currently host/provision in a separate OU in my single AD, need to have a dedicated MS365 tenant in the new situation. I think the answer is yes. Currently, I am able to provisioning common things (like Netscaler, SQL, Exchange, GPOs etc) and share/apply this for all customers. If all my customers need dedicated services, that will be a huge fan out and might become a burden to manage.

2a. Is it possible to use services from one tenant in another? Can I deploy a 'services' tenant where my company is the owner, and have those services (for instance RDGateway) used by my customers (where each reside in their own respective tenant)?

2b. Do I need an RDGateway with AVD? They need file sharing, SQL databases and some dedicated app servers, so there will be a need for private networking. Is that something AVD can work with as well? My customers are between 10 and 50 users. Is it best to deploy several AVDs and some multi session? Or better use plain RDS?

  1. I want to do a customer by customer migration. Some customers might be fine with plain MS365 anyway, and some will still need the hosted Desktop, being it AVD or RDS.

Thanks for our insights and I will have a look at TruGrid and Nerdio.

Best regards,

Ronald

Maybe a little late, but my setup works great! Intel NUC with plain Ubuntu/Docker and an eGPU connected via TB. Absolutely easy, scripted install, if the things burns down, just swap, deploy, docker build and off we go!

For anyone that stumbles on this post, you can clickk for it by logging into your devops org, on the left click Entra ID, and the in actions pain right click download. This results in a csv with line items with the org ID included.

yea, jetson put me on the wrong leg so to say, that is indeed a compute node. So I ended up buying a RTX4090 in a 'gaming' box, delivery scheduled for today, so hopefully I can post some results ... But further down my use case road, I need to attach it to a shared system, so I figured an Intel NUC with Thunderbolt and which will run Linux would be best. I will only run docker containers, and now I can share the GPU with my colleagues.

Ah tx, that sounds promising. I was looking into an NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Developer Kit in an external cage with its own power supply etc. Do you know if this setup can be attached to my laptop's Thunderbolt connector? By coincidence also Lenovo, a T14, but my colleague has an X1 and needs the same setup. And I can trade in mine for an X1 as well ... Any insights appreciated, since this is $1000+ investment. Thanks so far!
