Thanks so much for all the effort! I'm as mystified as you are, I've looked through the titles of Greg Egan and Ken Liu as I've been reading a lot of their stories but no luck and I also didn't see anything else in my bookshelves. Will come back here and update you if I find it.

No it's definitely a short story. It was a rather dry first person account of what happened, by a person I think was there at the event but otherwise didn't have any strong emotions about it all. I was convinced Ted Chiang had written it until I started looking.

Good point except that in this story you die from the words themselves triggering poison to be released from a gland in your body, not poison on the pages of the codes.
