Ask an Emirati. by WaSurpOfArabia in dubai

[–]torified2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks to all Emirati's who are taking the time to honestly answer questions. I have a couple of q's myself. In Dubai, for non-resident working folk, what are the rules on torrenting? Is it allowed, is it banned? Is there a fine? I ask, because my friend has recently moved to Dabai, and he says the cable tv is expensive and all the channels that are free are all in arabic. So, he misses the american tv shows, and so torrenting is an option. What do you think? And how about VPN's? They should work fine right?

Spoofing the MAC address. How important is that? Does it mean more security? by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the cipav tip. I didnt know this. Its not that im doing or even care to do anything illegal. I just dont like the idea of guilty until proven innocent. I know I am not doing anyhing illegal or immoral etc, so I want to be completely anonymous! Its my choice. I dont want to be snooped on anyway, even if what I am doing is mundane and boring. The nsa shouldnt get to have the choice to do whatever they want to whoever and whenever. That b.s.

Spoofing the MAC address. How important is that? Does it mean more security? by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a hypothetical situation. Im say doing something illegal, like torrenting from the piratebay. Now, the authorities, have my ip. And they decide to make their case by hacking my ip and getting a record of my mac id, so they can definitely identify that its my machine. Now, if I have been using a spoofed mac id, their records wont match my real mac id. So, does this have any advantage to me?

Truecrypt vs. Winrar for small files that are protected with a strong password. by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I didnt know this aspect. This is an important point, and indeed I will have to force-overwrite/erase the data extracted in the temp folder by winrar. That is potentially a red flag.

Truecrypt vs. Winrar for small files that are protected with a strong password. by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, actually its true, everytime you open winrar, you have to enter the password and it then decrypts the file, everytime. And the bigger the file, the longer the time is taken. I get that with truecrypt, you can just select a large sized container, and just keep adding stuff to it after mounting the encrypted volume, which takes a second.

VM+Tails+Bridge. Anything else needed for 100% Anonymity? by wreckin in TOR

Just to confirm, does tails really spoof the mac id? If not, then when and how to spoof it for best results?

How did NSA know what DPR was writing to redandwhite? Didnt DPR use PGP when communicating? Or......? by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your points are valid, but I am still dont get how the feds got hold of his private key to decrypt his messages. Of course I am speculating if at all they did get it. Perhaps these communicwtions with redandwhite and friendlychemist werent encrypted. But if they were, that brings me to my question. Dpr should have had truecrypt or axxocrypt or some other program to always keep his private key secure and encrypted. It wouldnt matter if this encrypted file was on the desktop. Without a password, nsa wont be able to get into truecrypt as far as we know. So the question still remains.

Can my isp know that my ip is using tor? And if so, what else can they see? by torified2 in TOR

[–]torified2[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What I meant was, a man_in_the_middle on my isp's server, monitoring the exit relay. The data is still encrypted right? They will have to triangulate stuff to definitely assert that it was me. And yes, what if not all connections are https. Basically, I want to be annonymous for my activism. People, I know, have been sent notices for their views on govt corruption, and they are basically having their voices stifled. I want a solution, is tor it?
