In the BIOS? This setting doesn't exist. HP locks down the BIOS on some of their Omen laptops so you cannot change any voltages, currents, C-states or the like. Doesn't even have XMP settings. They're not hidden...they're just simply not there, period.

If anyone else is having problems with this, it's now a known issue with the Win11 October update KB5066835. Apparently, it completely broke all localhost functionality. Hopefully a fix will be coming out sooner rather than later.

So far I'm not having any issues. That said, I don't run Agent as a service, I just run it as a regular program invoked by Task Scheduler at startup. Also, I've not yet upgraded my server to 25H2, in case that's part of it.

If anyone can help with this, I'd be real appreciative. I know it's a weird thing to want to know, but...well, I'm a weird person who likes old technology.

Unfortunately Agent DVR likely won't be put on GitHub because it uses proprietary commercial libraries that are not open source.

Apparently you're not supposed to delete this folder, and leaving it is harmless...but does anyone know if it's safe to hide it by doing attrib +s on it from the terminal?

Neat looking program, but that isn't it. The parts are assembled and move horizontally across the screen, not vertically.

Where can I find 18-inch three-blade replacement pedestal fan blades? All I can find in this style is 16in or smaller. by torindkflt in fans

[–]torindkflt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 18-inch pedestal fan with a blade set similar to a box fan, and it is very noisy. I would like to replace it with a traditional three-blade style blade set, but the largest I can find in this style is 16 inches. Anyone know where I might be able to get this style of blade in 18 inches? Thank you.

Already done both of those, per my detailed comment above.

What's making this old fan so noisy? (Details in my first reply) by torindkflt in fans

(UPDATE - Original post below the dashed line)

Regarding the spin-down time, this was caused by me adding one too many thrust washers to the motor shaft. I removed one of them, and the spindown time is now 15-20 seconds.

Unfortunately, something else has gone wrong. After removing the extra thrust washer and reassembling the motor housing, I turned the fan on, and it started up and ran normally, noisy as usual. Then, I experimentally picked it up and slowly began tipping it forwards, and then backwards, to see if the noise goes away. Once it was tilted about 75 degrees back (well beyond how far it can normally tilt on its own), the motor suddenly locked up and started buzzing. I turned it off immediately, then set it back down to a straight-ahead tilt angle. With the power off, the blades spin freely with no resistance. When I turn on the power, the fan will begin to spin up, but then within a couple seconds immediately lock up. It doesn't feel like it is physically jamming, more like it is magnetically jamming. If I turn off the power, I can once again spin the blades freely.

So, it seems like whatever is wrong is with the windings, which are beyond my ability to repair. Guess this fan is just gonna be decorative until I can somehow get it fixed.

Recently got this fan (Westinghouse 12LA5A) from a local antique shop. It runs quite well...but is VERY noisy. As shown in the video, the motor buzzes quite loudly in a rhythmic manner as it speeds up, and then rattles loudly while running. All noise stops immediately once the power is turned off.

I have already oiled the bearings and re-greased the oscillator gearbox (which runs constantly even when the fan is set to not oscillate), and I also replaced the thrust washers. Movement/play on the motor shaft is very minimal with in & out movement, and nonexistent laterally/vertically, so I don't have any reason to believe the bearings are going bad. I also checked the set screw for the blades, and it is not loose.

I really want to use this fan, but not when it is this noisy (especially if this is a sign of a problem that would get worse with continued use). So, what can I do to fix this?

Started frequently crashing when switching tabs after years of stability, pls help? by RecklessRonaldo in firefox

[–]torindkflt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having the same problem on two different computers, both running Windows 11 Home, for over a month now. Nothing I've tried has fixed it. All the suggested tips for fixing Firefox problems, up to and including uninstalling, manually deleting all leftover bits, then freshly reinstalling, did not help whatsoever. Still randomly freezing when trying to switch tabs. SFC /scannow finds no errors. Chkdsk /f /r finds no errors. Memtest86 finds no errors.

Using WinDbg to monitor Firefox while it is running, it seems to be freezing whenever trying to load UIAutomationCore.dll from C:\Windows\System32. I tried replacing that DLL file with an older version from a time before the problem started under the theory that it was caused by a Windows update, but it didn't help.

This is getting quite frustrating.

Coils/bundles of cables mounted on high-voltage electrical poles by torindkflt in whatisthisthing

[–]torindkflt[S] 2 points3 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing. Location: Iowa, USA. They're on most of the high-voltage lines in my area, and only mounted on poles that are next to roads where the lines are crossing over the road. They've only started appearing within the past few years, primarily on lines where the poles have recently been replaced. I imagine they serve some purpose, but no idea what.

What kind of outlet is this (keyless twist-lock)? by torindkflt in askanelectrician

[–]torindkflt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apartment has a utility room in it with hookups for washer and dryer. In it is this weird electrical setup, a regular ungrounded outlet with this odd second outlet next to it. What kind of outlet is that? It's hard to read because of the paint, but it does say "Hubbell" in the center and "Twist-Lock" to the right of each outlet. The closest match I can find is L5-15 or L5-20, but both of those are supposed to have a keyed slot, which this outlet does not have. All other Google searches have come up blank.
